You can keep entering the Newegg shuffle to see what bullshit congo you win! I finally got a 3080, but also got a Z590 motherboard, so I guess I'm watching black Friday sales for parts.

Can I do anything fun with an i5-7400 other than chuck it in the NAS I was planning on building? I got it for free from a friend and apparently it's not that bad despite only being 4 cores/4 threads

Assuming it's not the f model and does still have the igpu portion of the chip, Intel's QuickSync works pretty well as a plex server, especially if you're already putting it in a NAS that has media.

I have the Gigabyte Aorus Z590 because it came with the 3080 in the Shuffle. It's okay. The audio out definitely pops on start/wake, but is otherwise clear. All of the NVME slots have screw down heat plates, don't buy anything with an integrated heat sink.

The software is, uh, obnoxious. The Gigabyte App Center continually tries to install Norton Internet Security. You can get the RGB software to work without the app center. It'll keep trying to run services for easytune and whatever else.

Looks like cases are another victim of COVID. Higher prices, and limited availability.

Probably a bad idea to uninstall it?

Well at the moment I don't have the app center, disabled the easy tune background services, and the RGB still works. I'm using Intel's XTU to fiddle with the clock speed. When I tried easytune it was functional but super aggressive.

I'll report back if it blows up, I guess. I might have to restart the rgb app manually on restart?

How are Gigabyte's Intel motherboards? I recall hearing about an issue with a bad bunch of power supplies, and some complaints about their RMA process, but I can't tell if they're valid issues or just that people with bad experiences are more likely to talk about them. I was considering the Z690 AORUS ELITE AX DDR4 for an Alder Lake build so I was curious.

That's at least a different audio chip, the one on my Aorus Z590 pops on start up and wake up. Their software is kind of poo poo, their app center continually tries to install Norton. Otherwise, not completely terrible?

Is this the Elite or the Pro? Cause apparently the Pro, which is the more premium model, has thermal issues, and maybe some kind of defect. I was considering picking up the Pro, because it's discounted on Amazon.

I have the Z590 Aorus Pro AX because it came with the newegg bundle, I was comparing it to the Z690 the OP asked about. I'm not super thrilled with it, I was really happy with the Asrock on my old 8700k.

I'll have to check that video out. As a result of needing to trade in my office for a nursery, I'm in ye olde basemente with a much cooler environment, so hopefully I have extra free cooling.

I'm primarily looking to upgrade due to age, the not ideal 2017 upgrade came from a detonating motherboard and PSU. Those were 5 years at the time.

Current build is a follows, CPU, MOBO, PSU was new in january 2017. Prices are kinda iffy as I'm in Norway.

Clearances willing for the aircooler, or a change to a Noctua D15 if they become available.

That ram seems expensive for 3600 DDR4. I'm not saying you have to go down to the $115 Teamgroup option, but there's Crucial and G Skill options in the $160 to $180 range. (for 32gb)

Any Norwegian retailers like Microcenter to get any better pricing on CPU and Mobo combos?

I got another monitor for it so I can use it as a backup computer. My office ended up in the finished basement, and it's nice to have a computer to use elsewhere in the house if I need a break from a fairly loud 4yo and kids shows.

In theory, a new gaming laptop would have been better for that, but grabbing another okay 1440 monitor was cheaper than a worthwhile laptop.

So incoming big chunk of text, but I believe the pre-built HP/omen PC I bought 2 and a half years ago has two bad sticks of ram. PC currently runs, but I've had blue screens/crashing every now and then, weird occasional graphical artifacting when scrolling around on YouTube videos, though it's not a constant problem.

Independent of actual memory errors, you want to open Chrome Flags, find "Choose ANGLE graphics backend" and set it to OpenGL. That should fix the the artifacts in Chrome, YouTube, etc.

Upgrade value question. I have:

11700k that will sit at 5ghz all cores happily
NH D15s
Gigabyte z590 Aorus Pro Ax
32gb DDR4 3600 from Crucial I think
Gigabyte 3080 aio water cooled.
RMx 750w power supply

I low key dislike the motherboard. I have it because it "came" with the video card in covid times. So far I'm avoiding the built in ethernet and audio. I was looking at possible upgrade combos because I live near a microcenter! They have:

13700k bundle for $550
7800X3d bundle for $470
7900X bundle for $570.

CPU comparisons put the 7800X3d a bit ahead, the 13700k a bit more, and the 7900X at a bit more than double the performance of my current setup. Cost aside, is it dumb to upgrade? Anything worth waiting 6-12 months for at non bundle prices that's supposed to be amazingly better than the bundles?

I'd probably shunt the 11700 into the plex server at some point to replace the 9100 setup there for better decoding, but realistically it just hosts all the james bond films for my wife and not much else.
