Would you be my new best friends?

May was the month of AEW, with three of their champions taking close to 75% of all votes cast for the month. But one woman was not to be denied, which was ironic since May marked the end of a year+ title reign. AEW Women's Champion Hikaru Shida won the Champ of the Month poll for the second time, literally one year after she won the poll for the first time. In the year between she had great match after great match, staging a tournament that ran across two different countries with some of the best women wrestlers in the world all taking aim at HER title. In the end though it was her biggest rival in AEW that took the belt from her, with Dr. Britt Baker DMD winning the belt at Double or Nothing in a Match of the Year Contender. Britt herself placed third only 2 votes behind the second placed champion Kenny Omega, whose two month winning streak came to an end. In May though nobody could deny it was Hikaru Shida who was the Champion of the Month (well, I mean, lot of people could, just not enough!), and the win came her way here even if she lost in front of the raucous crowd at Double or Nothing. In both cases, she walks away to the chant of,"Thank you, Shida!", and it is well deserved.

Eligible Champions are chosen on a combination of accessibility, prestige/notoriety and by overwhelming popular request. For promotions where lengthy periods of time pass with no title defenses, promos, appearances, shows etc those champions will be dropped from the poll for that period only, then return when once again relevant - for instance, Dr. Britt Baker DMD (AEW Women's), RUSH (ROH), Shun Skywalker (Dragongate), Tsukasa Fujimoto (Ice Ribbon), & VENY (SEAdLINNNG) did not defend their titles, and so have been dropped from the poll for this month. The monthly "None of the Above" option is a valid potential "winner" and has "won" the poll in the past, feel free to use this as a protest vote if you so wish.

Now onto the eligible contenders for the month just gone, feel free to make an argument for/against any particular champion you think does/doesn't deserve the votes of other posters in this thread.

:sweep: Kenny Omega (AEW & IMPACT World Champion) - Kenny defeated Moose at Impact Wrestling's Against All Odds PPV in the middle of June to retain the Impact World title, then followed that up with an incredible defense of his AEW Championship against Jungle Boy towards the end of the month. He hasn't defended the AAA title all year, though Andrade El Idolo (now also in AEW) made noise not too long ago about wanting shots at either (or both) the AAA and AEW title. Everybody wants Kenny and his titles, as he continues to deliver incredible matches, great promos, awesome backstage skits (his foiled efforts to bully Jungle Boy during Dynamites in particular)... everybody except current #1 contender and old tag team partner, Hangman Adam Page, even as his good and wholesome friends encourage him to face his demons.

Miyu Yamashita (Princess of Princess Champion) - Miyu had one of the busiest months of any champion, starting by defeating her archrival and closest friend(???) Yuka Sakazaki at the CyberFight Cyber Festival before challenging for the PRINCESS Tag Championships with Maki Itoh just 11 days later. Defeat in that match led to her second defence of the month against Sakisama in Ryogoku KFC Hall where the MegaChamp returned to her winning ways. Thanks to GEORGE W BUSHI.

:thurman: Bianca Belair (Smackdown Women's Champion) - At Hell in a Cell, Bianca defeated Bayley for the second PPV in a row, in a feud built around the idea that both women were angry at the other for laughing at them. These are two of the best women wrestlers in the world, by the way.

:anime: Bobby Lashley (WWE Champion) - Bobby Lashley FINALLY had to face Drew McIntyre in a one-on-one situation at Hell in a Cell. Drew wanted to avoid the blatant interference from Wrestlemania (MVP said,"Hey Drew" while standing outside the ring, this cost Drew the title) so got Lashley inside the cage where it was impossible for anybody to interfere on his behalf. Anyway, Lashley defeated Drew inside the Hell in a Cell when MVP interfered on his behalf.

:smugdog: Roman Reigns (WWE Universal Champion) - After Roman Reigns obliterated Rey Mysterio's large adult son, Dominic, in a beatdown on Smackdown, Rey Mysterio demanded their Hell in a Cell title match be on the next Smackdown instead. Roman claimed that Rey wasn't on his level and he would easily beat him. In the match, Rey wasn't on Roman's level and he easily beat him up.

:pkmnwhy: Rhea Ripley (Raw Women's Champion) - Rhea Ripley defended her title against Charlotte Flair at Hell in a Cell, retaining the title but losing the match when she.... hang on this can't be right? Got.... DQed for accidentally hitting Charlotte with the.... the little cardboard topping from the announce table? No no, sorry guys, somebody is putting fake poo poo on the Internet, clearly.

:science: Jun Akiyama (KO-D Openweight Champion) - Uncle Jun continued his dominance over DDT by defeating the face of the company, HARASHIMA, at CyberFight Cyber Festival, before entering the King of DDT tournament to decide his own next challenger. After avenging his loss to Shunma Katsumata in the first round, Akiyama fell to Daisuke Sasaki in just 4 minutes in the second round. Thanks to GEORGE W BUSHI.

:bustem: Keiji Mutoh (FORMER GHC Heavyweight Champion) - The unlikeliest championship reign of 2021 came to an end at CyberFight Cyber Festival when the 58-year-old champion finally fell to NOAH stalwart Naomichi Marufuji. It was Mutoh's decision to break his promise to never use the moonsault again that led to his downfall as the damage to his robot knees was far worse that whatever pain he inflicted on Marufuji, allowing the former ace of NOAH to capitalize. The former champion has not been seen since the defeat, but his alter ego, The Great Muta has emerged and embarked on a quest to kill Kenoh. Thanks to GEORGE W BUSHI.

Naomichi Marufuji (GHC Champion) - At the age of 41, it's not often that NOAH's ex-ace finds himself in the role of the young gun in a match, but at CyberFight Festival he defeated Keiji Mutoh, 17 years his senior, to once again become GHC Champion for a record equalling fourth time. His next challenger is once again one of his seniors, and the man he shares the GHC reigns record with, Takashi Sugiura as the two meet in Sendai on July 11th. Thanks to GEORGE W BUSHI.

:yohoho: Minoru Fujita (Super Asia Champion) - For the first time in 3 months, Fujita defended the Gatoh Movie ChocoPro Super Asia title... and made up for lost time with a close to 60 minute war with Mei Suruga. Suruga threw EVERYTHING she had at Fujita, and he had to work his rear end off to beat her.... but beat her he did, retaining his title on his first defense since winning it from Baliyan Akki (who refereed this match) in March.

Suwama (FORMER Triple Crown Heavyweight Champion) - After over 450 days as champion and 7 successful title defenses, Suwama's 7th run as the Triple Crown Champion ended on a sadly weak note, as he was forced to vacate the crown due to coming down with COVID-19 and not being able to make an advertised title match.

:viconia: Jake Lee (Triple Crown Heavyweight Champion) - Jake Lee won the vacant Triple Crown near the end of June, after being the first of three competitors to win 2 falls in a row in matches against Kento Miyahara and Yuma Aoyagi, earning his first Triple Crown in a way that was probably not exactly how he'd have liked to accomplish the feat.

:vd: Shingo Takagi (IWGP World Heavyweight Champion) - With the new IWGP World Heavyweight Championship vacated by Will Ospreay, it was time for Kazuchika Okada to finally get it back when he would win the vacant title match in June. So he went into Dominion assured that his destiny would once again set him on top of New Japan.... and met a dragon by the name of Shingo Takagi who defeated Okada in an INCREDIBLE 36 minute long title match to become the third holder of the new version of the belt, and finally arrive at the top of a major wrestling promotion as he had long, long, long deserved. And having defeated one God, he's now after another, as his next title match will be against the first holder of the new belt: Kota Ibushi.

Utami Hayashishita (World of Stardom Champion) - Utami successfully defended her championship in the main event of the twice postponed Ota Ward show in a grueling 44 minute draw with the veteran Syuri, in a match that became the first women's match to earn a 5.5 star rating from Dave Meltzer and drove up Stardom World subscribers by 10%. The next challenge for Utami will be a very different type of match as she defends against Oedo Tai's nefarious leader Natsuko Tora on July 4th in the Yokohama Budokan. Thanks to GEORGE W BUSHI.

:umberto: (None of the Above) - If you're struggling to find a champion not on the list to try and insinuate that the poll is skewed, or you just don't want to vote for any of the champions who are there, or you just want to see the results... then None of the Above is the option for you!

I'm not making a fucking QCS thread for this but seriously can we take a harder stance on Kiwifarms freaks like this guy, Jesus Christ seriously, you used to be better at knocking these creeps down. I guess ADTRW mods aren't responsible like GBS mods are.
Incredible month for wrestling between Yamashita's good defenses with Saki-Sama & Yuka Sakazaki, Kenny's awesome matches in AEW, and the first 5.5 Star women's match from Stardom's Utami.

Oh and Shingo I guess

Voted for Utami. She's gotten Dave's first 5 star rating for a woman's match in like 20 years, became the talk of the wrestling world, even people who don't usually pay attention to Stardom, #1 in PWI's current woman's ratings, her match with Syuri led to a %10 increase in Stardom World subscriptions when it was uploaded. All that and she's still less than 3 years into her career.

3 days to go and Shingo has a strong but not insurmountable lead, the dragon-man being pursued relentlessly by the biggest badass in professional wrestling, Miyu Yamashita. Utami holds 3rd place currently with a 1 vote lead over two time this year monthly winner Kenny Omega, proving once again that EVERY. VOTE. MATTERS. So vote!

Accidentally left off the first iteration of June's poll, once he was put back on there was no doubt from the first vote to the last that the midpoint of the year - much like the start - would belong to New Japan, and this time not to one of the usual suspects. This time was Shingo Takagi's time to shine, as for the second time in the history of these polls and the first since he joined New Japan, Shingo won the Champ of the Month poll. With over 45% of the vote, he was the clear frontrunner with nearest competitor Miyu Yamashita only managing just over a third of the votes for her respectable second place finish. This has been the story of Shingo in New Japan, always the bridesmaid but never the bride, perhaps at risk of going the way of Hirooki Goto as the perennial challenger who never quite wins the big one... except he won the big one! Defeating Kazuchika Okada at Dominion to win the vacant IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, Shingo was quick to remind the world (and New Japan) that he's at the top of the mountain now and HE sets the rules.... and rule one of this violent dragon-man is that defeating one God wasn't enough and he wants a shot at another: Kota Ibushi! It is exciting times ahead with Shingo as champion, and hopefully not another 5+ year wait for his next Champ of the Month victory.
