I learned today that "animal rescue" videos on YouTube are a big thing, and that actual organisations have shown that a shocking number of them are fake & staged (and dangerous & traumatizing & sometimes fatal for the animals involved)

Various channels regurgitate these feel good stories because they're massive, ad-revenue-generating clickbait. The first I came across, I remember thinking "oh, that's cute, but something's setting off my grift detector." Lo and behold, in the space of a couple days, I saw three other snappily-produced "animal rescues" and yep, folks are absolutely just putting animals in dangerous situations, filming it, and selling it to unscrupulous media orgs that know exactly what they're getting.

And often the rules that are broken are done in a direct response to countless close calls where drivers negligently or willfully endanger the lives of folks on bikes. Going through a red light when clear, for example, is a way to put distance between yourself and the driver turning left or right who might try to murder you with their vehicle.

The only reason it is this, though, is because our cities empower and protect local property-owning misanthropes who shoot down any and all new housing. If the state simply erected thousands and thousands of quality homes where people most want to live, prices would plummet as all the existing sellers couldn't gouge buyers the way they can now. Hell, as much as I want it to be all public housing, given that's just not possible from a political perspective on the scale we need right now, I'm fine with letting private developers scramble all over one another to try to build the most homes.

The whole "vacant homes!" argument is largely a red herring. Sure, apply a vacancy tax in high demand areas, but the majority of vacancies across the country are either not anywhere folks want to live or just short-term in-between buyers/leasers.

"Alternate" currencies existed long before crypto, too, but never caught on because they were dependent on fly-by-night con artists to hock them to the credulous (and the credits to hock them to their circle of friends). One of my previous employers purchased $5k in some "real business currency for real business people" which, surprise surprise, was effectively unusable because the whole thing was a cycle of dopes realizing all the dopes before them had already written the "currency" off as a con.

I mean, there's plenty of actual performative corporate wokeness to be critical of, but this ain't it. Pulling the product out of the illegal settlements has sparked a backlash with real teeth from powerful folks in Israel and the US who are deeply invested in maintaining the slow-motion ethnic cleansing of Palestine and the folks making the decision at B&J had to know that it would.

I also made a point to pick up a couple pints of their ice cream on my last grocery run, because corporates do inform their decisions based on revenues. I won't stick with it because I'm a cheap bastard who's fine with store brand, but it's not impossible that other corporations will follow suit if the positive outweigh the negatives for their bottom lines.

It would be great if we got as proper, non-exploitative public banking system in the US, but the predatory payday lenders and even the sightly more legit banks have way too much influence for such to ever get through. I dream of a national ID system that proactively enrolls and issues IDs to all residents, with the IDs linked to basic bank accounts so no one has to ever touch cash again. Would completely undercut a whole swathe of businesses that are based exclusively on out-and-out exploration of their "customers".

And, sure, if the Nazis gained power it could be exploited horribly, but the same is true of every aspect of government. I'd rather have a government that actively attempts to meet its citizens need, even if I have to fight extra hard to keep Nazis out of power, than to throw my hands in the air and say we can never have nice things else the Nazis might use them against us.
