CFL 2021 SEASON MEGAAAATHREAD

I tried making weekly GDT threads for the 2019 season but it was sparsely used so I figured there would be one thread that is all CFL all the time, IT IS BACK!

The CFL is returning for the 2021 season after the 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID leaving American players unable to travel and stands empty. An abbreviated 16 week season will be played with the Grey Cup taking place on December 12th, 2021 in Hamilton, ON. The season will kickoff in less then 2 weeks on August 5th, 2021. Here is a quick primer on all the teams after a year off going east to west.

Montreal Alouettes

Head Coach: Khari Jones
Starting QB: Vernon Adams Jr.
2019 Record: 10-8, Lost to Edmonton in the Eastern Semi-Final
Championship Odds: +900

2019 was a weird season for the Alouettes, Head Coach Mike Sherman was fired less than a week before the season and Offensive Coordinator Khari Jones was promoted. Despite the turmoil the team improved from 5-13 to 10-8 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Former Oregon QB Vernon Adams Jr. cemented himself as the start throwing for 3942, 24 TDs and 13 INTs adding another 394 yards and 12 TDs on the ground. They had the 2nd best scoring offense in the league but their defense finished 6th which often lead to late game winning drive and comebacks. The Alouettes are expected to battle for 2nd place in the East Division with the Toronto Argonauts.

Ottawa REDBLACKS

Head Coach: Paul LaPolice
Starting QB: Matt Nichols
2019 Record: 3-15, Missed the Playoffs
Championship Odds: +1200

Not much to say about the REDBLACKS 2019 season, the offense was worst in the league and the defense was second last. Both Head Coach Paul LaPolice and Matt Nichols come over from over from Winnipeg to try and right the ship. LaPolice is one of the sharpest offensive minds in the CFL, they have decent receivers, if Nichols can stay healthy this team might not be so bad to watch in 2021.

Toronto Argonauts

Head Coach: Ryan Dinwiddie
Starting QB: Nick Arbuckle
2019 Record: 4-14, Missed the Playoffs
Championship Odds: +650

Dinwiddie is a first time head coach coming over from Calgary where he spent 3 years as the QB coach. Arbuckle joined the Argonauts after they signed Nichols prior to the cancelled 2020 season. They went kind of nuts in general in free agent in the one year layoff so the team is almost completely new. In 2019 they were the inverse of Ottawa, 2nd last in offense and dead last in defense. What this years team ends up being is a huge question mark but talent wise they should make a decent playoff push.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Head Coach: Orlondo Steinauer
Starting QB: Jeremiah Masoli
2019 Record: 15-3, Lost to Winnipeg in the Grey Cup
Championship Odds: +300

Hamilton was a dominant team in 2019 and they kept as much as they could together for this upcoming season. Starting QB Jeremiah Masoli was injured 6 games into the season in 2019 and replaced by Dane Evans who kept the Ti-Cats rolling. Masoli returns as the starter this year but Dane Evans could push him in camp. They are the odds on favourites to win it all as they are the most known quantity and at the very least should emerge as the number 1 team out of the East division.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Head Coach: Mike O'Shea
Starting QB: Zach Collaros
2019 Record: 11-7, Won the Grey Cup
Championship Odds: +500

Winnipeg capped a strange 2019 season ending a 29-year championship drought. Starting QB Matt Nichols went down early in the season and while back-up QB Chris Streveler was a running threat the Winnipeg passing game struggled. Zach Collaros was acquired at the trade deadline, took over as the starter, went 4-0 to get the Bombers in the playoffs and won two playoff games on the road leading up the Grey Cup. Winnipeg returns most of their offense and the front 7 on defense with most of their roster churn occurring in the secondary, which was dominant in 2019. Winnipeg is expected to finish 2nd or 3rd in the West Division this year.

Saskatchewan Roughriders

Head Coach: Craig Dickenson
Starting QB: Cody Fajardo
2019 Record: 13-5, Lost the West Final to Winnipeg
Championship Odds: +450

Saskatchewan ended the 2019 in a heart breaking way when, well watch his clip.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ACtaSrAiqA&t=449s

Cody Fajardo is hands down the best QB in the CFL right now and Saskatchewan returns most of their other players that won them the CFLs West Division in 2019. The leagues number 4 scoring offense and 3rd best defense along with a passionate fanbase that want nothing more than to get drunk on Pilsner and watch football make Saskatchewan the favorites to win the West in 2021.

Calgary Stampeders

Head Coach: Dave Dickenson
Starting QB: Bo Levi Mitchell
2019 Record: 12-6, Lost the West Semi-Final to Winnipeg
Championship Odds: +500

Calgary comes into this season with as high of expectations as anyone. Starting QB Bo Levi Mitchell is a 2 time MOP winner but struggled with injuries in 2019 and while backup QB Nick Arbuckle did a good job filling in the team just didn't reach the same levels of dominance they had seen in 2014-2018. The offense around Mitchell this year is completely re-done and is a big question mark heading into the 2021 season, the defense should be good as always and they should at the very least make the playoffs out of the West.

Edmonton Eskimos Elks

Head Coach: Jaime Elizondo
Starting QB: Trevor Harris
2019 Record: 8-10, Lost the East Final to Hamilton
Championship Odds: +1100

The racist name got changed! Also I have no idea who Jaime Elizondo is but he is the Elks new head coach for the 2021 season. Edmonton lost their franchise QB Mike Rielly to BC in free agency before the 2019 season. They signed Ottawa starter Trevor Harris immediately afterwards and had an okay season. Harris was an MOP candidate before he struggled with some injuries and the team lost a lot of close games. For 2021 this team had a lot of turnover since the last time they played so ??? it's anyones guess how they play, right now they are expected to finish last in the West.

BC Lions

Head Coach: Rick Campbell
Starting QB: Mike Rielly
2019 Record: 5-13, Missed the playoffs
Championship Odds: +1000

Last and based on the 2019 performance, actually least the BC Lions. They signed CFL All-Pro Mike Rielly in 2019 free agency but forgot that the QB is not the only player on the field. Rielly spent 2019 running for his life, throwing to no-name receivers and the defense struggled all the same. They enter 2021 with new players all across the offensive and defensive lines and a mostly new group of no-name receivers. BC is another one of those ???? teams and are expected to be trying to fight their way out of the basement of the West.

Really confused why you wouldn’t just start Mike Rielly if he’s healthy enough to play and if he’s injuring why would you start him in the 2nd half of a blowout.

Couldn’t finish though, just doesn’t seem wise to push out your highly paid, 36 year old franchise QB in week 1.

Offensive play seems so sloppy the first few games so far. Hoping it picks up a bit.

This Ottawa/Edmonton game is another one. I think the first few weeks are going to be basically preseason level play.

The new Elks logo is growing on me (initially I didn't like how simplified it was compared to stuff like the Bucks logo) but I like the antlers on the helmets and seeing the team already starting to prance and throw up antlers after a great play is fun
