This image is confusing me. Why is the lion just standing in the middle of a flock of sheep? Why aren't the sheep concerned? Maybe the lion think it's a sheep?

Otoh that lion looks pretty paunchy, maybe it just filled up on sheep and the other sheep know they have nothing to fear until dinner time. Maybe the lion ate all the jerk sheep, and the rest of the sheep are like good I'm glad they got eaten, this lion is the best.

Going to think a lot more about this, it better not be a photoshop.

My parents are trying to guilt me and my wife into visiting them over labor day.

They're unvaccinated. So is the rest of my family I'd be seeing there. In the middle of a beet red part of Pennsylvania (case count-wise). They're life long smokers and my mom is immunocompromised.
My wife and I are vaxxed but I've got garbage lungs/asthma and she's a teacher.

In spite of all this the guilt of not having seen them in nearly 2 years almost made me consider this madness but I've flipped around to being angry that they would even ask given that they are completely uncompromising

That sucks man, sorry you have to deal with that nonsense guilt-tripping.

I'd opt for:

- restating that you only go to gatherings where folks are fully vaxxed (and even then it's unlikely);

- say that you'd be very happy to join them via zoom or messenger video or what have you;

- and wish them well if a hybrid in-person/online hangout is "not possible" for them.

While I understand the anger and the possible desire to cut them off, doing so probably escalates the issue heading into the fall. They'll claim you're the unreasonable one for going silent, and twist the situation around to try and guilt you.

By keeping it diplomatic and saying you'd love to participate from afar, you've made a genuine effort and they have no new ammo to fire at you come Thanksgiving etc.

But maybe I'm naive in thinking this will be effective, I dunno.

Thanks friend, I believe this is probably the approach I'm going to take. I've explained before I don't want to get them sick but delta breakthroughs have changed the game even more these days and I'd like the rest of what is hopefully a long and happy for my wife and I to not be marred by long-term illness, at least not self-inflicted

I lol everytime people say 'its endemic now - we just gotta learn to live with it' and mean it's time to end NPIs. Endemic covid means never ending NPIs and masks since variants are going to continue to emerge and our vaccine only strategy is clearly failing.

Our hospital system is already straining hard and this wave is only starting. Annual/semi annual waves will break things worse every time as the nurses etc. won't be replaced anywhere near fast enough. And that's assuming the current wave won't collapse our health care system. We seem to be paralleling India right down to angry relatives attacking healthcare workers. I guess we have more refrigerated trucks though so I'm sure it will be fine.

There will never be a national vaccine mandate, so that won't save us.
There will never be another lockdown, so that won't save us.
Capital will never feel enough of a sting so they have no incentive to produce better treatments or provide flexible work options, so the private sector won't save us.

Maybe the virus will just mutate into a less effective version of itself completely counter to our understanding of how natural selection functions?
Just 'cause?

and yes, I expect it to fail the day after the 10 year warranty. it has a coil whine sometimes I don't love that fucks with my tinnitus, but hey what do you expect for $2000? clearly if you want a decent fridge you spend $15000 on a commercial one, as the doomsday ec thread has taught me.

there's probably like one artisanal fridgemaker out there that still does it all by hand and their fridges last a lifetime but you need to be on a waitlist to get one
