Sometimes a show has a weird bad aside that's easy to shrug off and sometimes a show will do something that feels like it reveals actually lovely values or recontextualizes the parts you like about it in a way that's hard to reconcile imo

I read ahead a bit in Mieruko-chan and I see just enough of what people like about it to get annoyed, because through 3 volumes it really has shown some ability to do interesting and emotional stuff with the premise and there's a lot of really striking art, but even once the *super* uncomfortable horniness gets toned down, you still have to sit through a lot of pages where the only real joke is "Miko feels intensely unsafe (often for provably good reason!!!) and has to just sit silently and deal with it" and it's just....kind of a bummer? It's weird, I get why people like it but it often just rubs me the wrong way.

Her unsafety didn't make me feel bad because it's a totally unrealistic kind of unsafety: the threat (supernatural beings) doesn't exist in real life and isn't obviously allegorical to something that exists in real life. I mean the early chapter with the one that's just straightforwardly groping her friend and nearly does same to her is, uh unpleasant, IMO

Honestly I feel like most of the games I've played have kind of been in an ideal sweetspot in terms of difficulty for this sort of thing - they're almost never so punishing that you'll have to optimize your favorite unit out of the lineup or even out of something close to a starring role (unless you're just wildly in love with a Katz-From-Z-Gundam tier support character I guess), but the later stages are pretty good about at least forcing you to take advantage of everyone's special abilities and generally have everyone play their class, and then there's optional skill-point objectives that I generally find pretty genuinely challenging on top of that without ever threatening raw progression.

I think an at-least-okay live action Bebop is theoretically possible, but I don't think it's likely to happen if your scriptwriter thinks that "Welcome To The Ouch" is a good zinger or that the guy who was obviously cool because of how he dominated limited screentime needed way more screentime. Like the review that got quoted upthread made it sound like a big problem with the script is that it was desperate to find A Big Main Primary Conflict, when a big thing I like about a lot of anime, Bebop or otherwise, is how willing many of them are to mostly or entirely shrug off the need for A Big Main Primary Conflict at all.
