Yes, I understand what tankies are. However I don't see the problem of pointing out 30 years of US interventionism in majority Muslim countries as being somewhat problematic.

Hell, the post is saying maybe we'd have a bit more ground to call out the Chinese if we weren't engaged in killing Muslims everywhere else in the world

Playing whataboutism with atrocities only serves to minimize the problems and enable the perpetrator. Whether that was the intent or not is immaterial when the effect is providing an argument in favor of the actions of the perpetrator. It’s the same thing as people playing whataboutism with cop murders or Proud Boy violence.

“China is committing cultural genocide”-“what about Yemen/the Native Americans”

“Cops kill too many black folk”-“what about black on black crime”

“Proud boys are violent terrorists who murder people”-“what about the time Richard Spencer got punched”

Good to know we should never address the problems of American imperialism and hegemony because that distracts from other authoritarians

I'm completely comfortable saying China does a lot of terrible things. Their environmental policy is disastrous, their human rights record is bad, and they are oppressing Muslims in Western China.

We have done far more harm to Muslims than China, and those things we've done have been cheered by the exact same political and media figures who are currently pretending they care about Muslims in Western China. There's whataboutism, and then there's guys in "I loving love it when governments kill Muslims" t shirts acting shocked and appalled at China mistreating Muslims.

It's obviously not genuine concern for Muslim human rights driving this campaign, so it must be something else. It sure seems like that something else is saber rattling.

What are people protesting about the investigation of that explosion?

The violence erupted amid soaring tensions over the probe into the devastating explosion at Beirut’s port on August 4, 2020. The protesters gathered in the Lebanese capital two days after Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah’s most scathing criticism of Bitar to date. Nasrallah accused the judge of “politically targeting” officials in his investigation.

Bitar has for months tried to question ex-ministers Ali Hasan Khalil, Ghazi Zeiter, Nouhad Machnouk, Youssef Finianos, as well as former Prime Minister Hasan Diab. Khalil and Zeiter belong to the Amal Movement, a Shia party led by Speaker Nabih Berri and closely allied to Hezbollah.

quote:

President Michel Aoun and Prime Minister Mikati continue to publicly back Judge Bitar. Mikati said Lebanon cannot bear the removal of a second judge from the blast probe.

However, ministers belonging to Hezbollah, Amal, and some allies have reportedly pressured the cabinet to take a formal position against Bitar.

It's somewhat misleading, as those coaches get paid by the universities, but the universities basically take donations from boosters specifically to pay for those coaches, plus the sport revenue usually ends up covering those salaries as well. I waffle about the morality of it, as it's not like taxpayers are fronting the coach salaries and the public university funding goes elsewhere.

But the universities tend to push things toward sports because money so gently caress em

Bored As gently caress posted:

A large part of it has to do with the issue of cops pulling back and not being as proactive as they were. They do this because they are either ordered to become of Covid, or were ordered to for any reason, but also because they're butt hurt over people hating them now so they think "what's the point in being proactive if I'm just going to open myself up to lawsuits or jail." Also many cities have passed laws that explicitly state that cops can not pull people over for minor traffic violations. So it's a combination of all of that that leads to a huge decrease of traffic stops in some areas.

In some areas there are now explicit orders that cops cannot pursue a vehicle either at all, or unless it is a murder or rape suspect. So rear end in a top hat criminals just speed away and get away with driving like a lunatic, because the cities passed those laws.

Why invoke rapists? Cops themselves are rapists or basically never actually investigate or solve reported sex crimes. It's the shittiest argument to invoke in favor of policing.
