Yeah it's not even remotely about Owen Paterson, it's just a nice excuse to have a vote on it and absolve themselves (even more) of any potential future consequences.

My previous stance on Novara has been that Bastani has about 90% good takes and then the rest is melt poo poo, usually around giving some Tory MPs the benefit of the doubt or similar. Walker is about the same, and Ash has been consistently sound... until she wrote (or interviewed?) for Unherd the other day. And yes, I've noticed the awful clickbait titles. Haven't watched any of their vids since shortly after the election. Now I'm basically done with them. Speaking of melts: This could be interesting. I wonder if there's actually been any reflection from the Kimono Killer, or if he's still just fundamentally a comfortable liberal (I know what my money's on). Still, his work with the Good Law Project does seem to be actually good, and he's also very good on trans rights, so I never fully know what to think of him. Bobstar posted:Getting people to invert the way they view tax and government spending is hard, but I think this might be the most significant hump to get over. Of course there are right-lolberts who believe that all taxation is theft, and there are socialists and such, but in between those extremes there's a huge mass of floppy centre-ish people who kind of think that earning/having lots of money is fine, but taxing those rich people to pay for a functioning country is a necessary "evil" (or at least a necessary "thing"). This is probably the majority of people in fact. Interestingly also that taxed money is considered "our money" and the government has to be careful spending it, but all the money we make as workers that's ultimately funneled to billionaires is never viewed as "our money" and they can spend it on whatever the gently caress they want.

Can't remember who it was essentially saying "I work in the public sector and my pension is poo poo!" a couple of pages ago... I don't doubt that it is not as much as you deserve, but bear in mind how many people outside of the public sector didn't have any pension savings at all until the mandatory scheme was brought in a few years ago. I was one of them - I was earning decently, never made it into the top tax bracket, but I had to put all of my spare money into saving for a house etc. Of the 20 or so people I worked with at my last UK job, I can near enough guarantee that none of them had any pension savings to speak of either. Now mandatory payments are 8% (5% from employee, 3% from employer), so if you earn £30k a year (around the UK avg. for full-time workers) that's £900/year employer contributions, which is nothing. All the pension calculators I've looked at tell me that in my mid 30s with no pension savings currently to speak of (well, like £3k or something total), I should be putting away a grand a month. The NHS employer's contribution rate is 20.6%, and the average salary for a nurse is about £33k so employer pension contributions are £6800/year. Odds are unless you're at senior manager level in the private sector, you're not gonna be getting 20% employer contribution.

Yeah I mean. I could talk about that stuff a lot but I try to keep from being too blackpilled ITT. Bear in mind though that (arguably) 20 years ago when I started working, there weren't quite so many signs of the end-times, and even then, like gently caress did most [16-24] year-olds start pension savings when they started working.

I haven't posted about it ITT, though I have in TCC... Magic mushrooms are a pretty good thing* if you're feeling blackpilled. I started taking them for anxiety and they've helped a lot, and to generally give me a more positive outlook. There are a bunch of serious scientific studies coming out now saying that they're good for anxiety and/or depression. Mainly I've come to realise that even if there are valid reasons to think that everything is hosed, that needn't stop you from enjoying the life you do have. *I assume everybody ITT lives in Oregon, where they have recently been made legal, as I of course do not condone legal activity. Also if you were going to take them, you should read up about them. E: Lungboy posted:Nurses will be on LGPS or similar so employer contribution has no impact on their pension pot. Oh. Mushrooms last for about 6 hours and Acid lasts like 10, so that's one in favour of Mushrooms IMO. I still find that even knowing what I'm in for etc. that shrooms can be (though are not always) a harrowing experience for the first half of the trip. Then the second half is just pure clarity and a level of introspection and insight I'm not able to otherwise reach. It feels like the equivalent of having a cold, except it's your brain that's congested, and then you take psychedelics and all the congestion is gone and you can see things as they really are. Helps to bring into focus what's important in your life and that sort of thing. Tarnop posted:I assume you're talking about smaller doses than that Nah I'm macro-dosing. Also yeah it seems likely (and it's been said in at least one documentary I watched) that shrooms and LSD were banned because people who took them suddenly felt a connectedness and empathy towards other people, and those sort of thoughts tended towards communism. Can't have any of that dangerous empathy around. It's only in the last few years they've even been legal for medical professionals to study. Such a waste considering all the results that seem to be coming out now - we could have been 50 years ahead on this stuff. Anecdotally they've been a bit of a miracle cure for me so I'm telling people about it.

Yeah I think I already said that I'd strongly recommend reading up on the effects etc. before taking anything but just to be super clear: they're not to be taken lightly. Read up on effects, precautions, how to make sure you have the right mindset and physical setting to take them, and ideally have a "trip sitter" - somebody you can trust with you.

Failed Imagineer posted:That's obviously insane, but the fact that you'd even need heating on overnight implies the place has absolutely zero insulation - my 1940s hovel doesn't need any heating between 10pm and 8am even when it's below zero outside, and it stays about a comfy 16C, perfect for sleeping. Maybe drops a little lower by morning time but not much Your place probably doesn't have much insulation but I bet it has tons (probably literally) of thermal mass. Was the same in my parents' 1900 house. single skin external walls with no insulation but because the interior walls were also made of brick, once you heated that up, you could leave the heating off overnight and it'd stay warm. Works wonders for keeping cool in the summer too. This is something modern housing lacks - all the internal walls are made of cardboard (no, not literally) so there's nothing to heat up/cool down and stay cool/warm through the day/night cycle. If you have enough thermal mass (which to get to this point, probably requires you to have a large water tank or something - some people in the US fill their basements with barrels of water) then it can hold or absorb enough heat to act as a buffer between winter and summer, meaning that it takes in heat energy through the summer, then releases it through the winter. With an average (1900) home it'll just be enough to (somewhat) buffer and average out the hot/cold through the day and night.

Which is what HS2 is supposed to solve at... significantly greater cost than £50 million. I know this isn't mainly what your post was about, and I'm sure you're aware of this but for others: a reminder HS2 isn't even primarily about speed. It's about capacity. The West Coast Main Line is at capacity. AIUI they can't run any more trains on it because they have to keep minimum separation between trains, and the trains that do run on it are full. Lots of what you'll see with people objecting to HS2 is like "We're spending all this money and destroying the countryside just to get from Birmingham to London 30 minutes quicker!"... and yes, that is going to be one outcome. But the main thing they're doing it for is this: Total peak hour capacity at Euston will triple, which is a good thing if we're trying to take climate goals seriously.
