When my unit was deactivated I went from patrolling the streets of ramadi to living in my hometown US city in about 6 weeks, and very regular things got me very amped up and feeling like I needed a weapon. I could feel the siren call of becoming a gun guy, jumping into the welcoming arms of a multi billion dollar industry that sells its product with a culture of constant fear and constant ideation of lethal circumstances. I'm v glad I resisted that and think if I had turned down that path my odds of offing myself or God forbid feeling like I needed to "defend myself" would have been much higher.

It does feel like there is a ossification of politics and the old compromises are thinning to the point of breaking, very much like the mid 19th century. Unlike back then though, it's unimaginable that a new political party will form, let alone take the presidency and reshape America in short order. The dems are just going to resolve to do less and less to maintain their tenuous coalition of the haves and have nots, and the Rs are going to get even deeper into culture war stuff to maintain their own tenuous coalition between haves and have nots. All this madness and slow motion collapse imo comes from political factions being divorced from material interests. It's what makes the dems completely disfunctional and the Rs forever doubling down on crazy.

Same. He's earned my vote for that alone. But I'm a weirdo who votes on foreign policy.

Most people don't vote for that reason though. if you're a regular person on the lower half of the income and wealth distribution, life has probably gotten worse for you in the past year. Your costs are up at the grocery store and pump, your income may be higher but probably still isn't and almost certainly not up as much as prices, and if you were looking forward to any of the good things that economically comfortable upper middle class people told you joe was going to do - well, he hasn't, and isn't planning to anymore if he ever was.

People like me who have worked from home at a white collar job have built up savings. Our lives are actually better this year (and my material interests are going to bias me in that direction - maybe my vote for Biden was going to happen no matter what). I don't think most people in this economic and social position, which includes most vocal online liberals, understand that that's not the average experience.

He does this by saying "oh I'm not actually for our against anything here, but" (series of rumors that align entirely with the us state department propaganda campaign here)

Case in point

https://twitter.com/IwriteOK/status/1194094729962672128?s=20

He sure wasn't doing this for all the stuff the far right pro coup forces did.

As I recall he was very similar on Syria and libya, one of the guys who's big on the "moderate rebels" and then you look up the groups in question and it's guys with names like The Righteous Sword of Islam who were big friends with al Qaeda.

I see him as much more of a propagandist than a journalist, which isn't necessarily bad, but I see him as a propagandist for the same folks who supported gunning down trade unionists in Central America, invading Iraq, and turning Libya into a mad Max hellhole with open air slave markets.

Edit: I did like it can happen here, which led me to looking up his other work and that led to a giant yikes from me.

Assange is a rapist but they're putting him in jail for doing journalism, not rape. Every national security reporter has also relied on classified sources (foreign, domestic or both) for their reporting, which often undermines the policies of foreign governments. I don't think if Putin arrested a NY Times reporter for divulging classified Russian information people would be cheering. The precedent of arresting assange opens up all sorts of domestic reporters to arrest, both here (very likely we'll have a new R admin in three years) and abroad.

Best Friends

Okay I don't think people here would be cheering. But if it comes down to "reporters I don't like should get arrested for their reporting" then that's saying a free press shouldn't exist. Which is prob the consensus national take currently, sure (just not when put like that)

Assange isn't a reporter, he's basically a GRU mouthpiece / asset. If he had any journalistic integrity, he'd criticize Putin and leak poo poo about Russia, too. But he's about as impartial and has about as much journalistic integrity as Glen Greenwald.

"Digs dirt on some but not others" describes the output of almost every reporter. The things he's being charged with could be applied to almost any reporter who interacts with information the government wants to be secret.

More broadly, from Obama on there's been a crackdown on the idea of press freedom and leakers within liberal administrations. Just in time to build these rails for Trump, Trump 2 and Trump 3 and so on. Trump himself is too lazy and stupid to realize he can press the "imprison inconvenient national security reporters" button but the next few trumps might not be.

Our next car will be electric so I'm following the market (it will absolutely not be a Tesla). But the reason our next car will be electric is 95% of our car drives are just within the city and usually pretty short. Which also means our current gas cars will last till we die of old age at this rate. So basically our next car is electric, if we ever are able to justify buying a new car.

Modern democracy just can't handle viral pandemics imo. Everyone is too atomized, you can't reach everyone with information. You can't make people get vaccinated. Not every person on Earth can have their government afford vaccination in a market-based, closed IP system. And capitalism likes fostering far right movements and parties that will inherently agitate against any mass action, even ones that don't impede capital, like masks, let alone making meaningful shut downs impossible.

Best Friends
Nov 4, 2011

In America at least, even if you made a law saying everyone had to be vaccinated, the conservative movement would prevent that from being implemented at every level and it would formally die in the courts. But such a law wouldn't happen in the first place either, because the liberals also work at the beck and call of capital. There is nothing here preventing capital from getting what it wants at all times, and capital has decided covid is fine. Other countries that have some small smidgen of socialism still may have better luck. (In time, there will be "reforms" until every democracy has our free market paradise)
