There's serious hope that the SB 8 Abortion Law in Texas gets overturned at the Supreme Court based on oral arguments today. From the various court observers, it appears that Texas only has two justices obviously on their side. Kavanaugh, Barrett, and Roberts have all asked not-leading questions where they're trying to work through Stupid Law Questions.

Really doesn't matter though, not hard to find a 5-4 decision justified with a "we're super confused, therefore the law stands because Calvinball".

Really don't know wtf I would do about it at my precinct. There was a guy earlier that came in with gently caress [MAYOR] on the back of his hoodie and we didn't notice until he was past check-in. At the time, we only had three people instead of five, and it's not like there would be a fast response from police if he started up some poo poo. So we dealt with him like the obvious Trumpers last year - let them go and deny them the attention, even though we're technically supposed to stop them. They leave faster and it's really best for everyone.

Likely different because this dude's running for NYC mayor, probably way more likely he'd just yell and that's it.

There's pretty clear erosion too in New York burbs and NJ Governor still remains a toss-up/lean Democratic (partially because the vote-by-mail numbers are all goofy). The fact that NJ-Gov is even in the neighborhood of close is more proof that this environment is absolutely god-awful for anyone "in charge" - and that's Biden and his ~40% approval ratings. It's an easy story to tell - Biden promised normalcy and got elected because of it, has both houses of Congress, then Delta happened and hosed everything up. Voters don't much care that it's not in his control and he's doing drat-near everything to mitigate it (and Republicans are actively resisting). They don't even care much right now about Donnie's Comeback Tour. Democrats are "in charge" and everything still "going to hell", so the burbs are eroding and rurals are turning out at never-before-seen levels.

Just caught a 73% Latino, Biden +14 local seat in San Antonio flipping to a Republican. It's very much an election where you'd have to be a good Democratic candidate to win and hoooo boy TMac wasn't. He actually is going to get more votes than Northam did in 2021, but got absolutely swamped.

Edit: at least all my local poo poo came through fine. The usual democratic clean-sweep, even when Republicans had a solid slate, covered the city in yard signs, and even ginned up a bullshit controversy about a Veterans Memorial that got moved a whole 40 feet.

It's really too early for full-blown panic, but that is on the horizon. A year is a long drat time and it's very plausible that Delta recedes from dominating everything by mid-2022 and the economy gets bonkers-level good. I’m kind of surprised there isn’t more talk about the New Jersey governor race honestly. It’s neck and neck and has flipped multiple times and is almost certainly going to end in a recount but that it’s this close is wild. The republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli straight up ran on a platform that the people of New Jersey don’t know what they want and that he would lead them with an iron fist by expansive use of police force…. And people voted for him in droves?!?!. Like I get how that appeals to some people and how the republican nominee is going to draw in votes regardless but like I seriously can’t wrap my head around how enough people thought that sounded good to make the race still uncalled.

The NJ-GOV race is over, New Jersey just can't get its vote-by-mail counts done in a reasonable amount of time:

https://twitter.com/Redistrict/status/1455903514748760075

The outstanding votes are almost all in Biden +60 areas. Bernie Sanders mentioned something that I didn't know about - as long as the Murphy votes come in as expected, he will be the first Democratic governor to have been re-elected in *40 years*. Obama carried NJ by +15 in 2008, then Chris Christie won it by +3 in 2009. Obama carried NJ by +18 in 2012, yet Christie got re-elected in 2013 by +22.

The general story across-the-board is the Democrats showed up, but Republicans REALLY REALLY showed up, which cut into Democratic suburban margins. Like the tweet I sent earlier, the median American voter is a psychopath with the memory of a goldfish and a submissive kink, so they want BIG TOUGH STRONG DOMINANT PEOPLE.

Now the open question is why NJ shifted even more than VA, is it just standard off-year defections against the president in charge, or are things really hosed? It'll take a few weeks to know, as exit polls are terrible and saying poo poo like Youngkin won hispanic voters by +15 or TMac won hispanic voters by +30.

A likely operating theory of the TMac campaign was that in a Biden +10 state, all you had to do was nationalize the race and you win. So, you send out that mailer to every Democrat and/or Biden-voter that you have data about (obviously not the chuds) and they realize that Youngkin = Trump and they turn out. The trouble is that in 2020, the Republicans had a *really good* down-ballot year and ran ahead of Trump's numbers in a ton of places. So the pitch probably fell completely flat in this environment/economy, though again, TMac is going to get more votes than Northam did in 2017.

Mostly just need to hope for an economic turnaround in 2022 and Democrats never shut up about how it was because of them.

The full BBB bill will be a few weeks, pending a CBO score that six Democratic shitmods want. The progressives' compromise is getting a statement out of the shitmods, with Biden's backing, that the shitmods will vote for the BBB bill if the CBO score is close to the JCT/White House estimates.

Once that's done, the BBB will get Manchinized in the Senate and punted back, so maybe that bit gets done by Thanksgiving.

I mean this sincerely - I have no loving idea if this improves/decreases the chances of BBB passing.

Shitmods have been searching for a reason to kill BBB for a while, but the SALT deduction rides on BBB passing and a lot of the SALT-loving Democrats are the shitmods. Sinema is drat near fully on board at this point, but Manchin has been making noises like he wants to kill the whole thing while also saying it will likely pass by Thanksgiving. Progressives are pissed because they think the shitmods/Manchin got what they wanted (the beloved half loaf) and will now kill BBB, but conservatives are pissed at the Republicans that helped pass the infrastructure bill because they think that leads to a better chance of BBB passing. Meanwhile, Biden will not stop talking about all of the stuff in the BBB that he wants, so it's not like he's going to just sit idle either.

So I'm not trying to think about it too hard - there's a lot of good, good loving money in that Infrastructure bill and Donnie couldn't even do any of it in four years with a megacongress.
