It's worth comparing the story to others, because yes, it's pretty straightforward to arrange and contextualize (or in this case, decontextualize) quotes to change the impact. NR leads with ta paraphrase and moves the actual quote downward past a framing section that establishes Youngkin's misrepresentation of the relevant legislation as fact. It also provides no other material from the debate, to make it seem like a massive own of McAuliffe and the dominant element of the event. Here are a few non-right-wing newspapers debate coverage:

Washington Post

Associated Press

NBC

McAuliffe's response got applause during the actual debate. The thing you think is getting widespread coverage, or reflects the state of the debate, or was some sort of self-own...wasn't. It's resonant among people who are already on the right, and...you, because you bought their framing of it.

It is kind of hilarious that crypto proponents think that subjecting bitcoin to the same requirements as cash and stocks makes it "unusable as a currency."

iirc this also requires them to report trading crypto for other crypto as taxable income, so more onerous than stocks at least

People are venal and fickle at the best of times, and we've got a pretty clear consensus that they don't actually vote for policy, so what else would there be? Name recognition?

If we end up with Trump v Biden a second time, I imagine Trump's grievance politics would probably win vs. Biden's total lack of campaigning. But they might both be dead by then, so it might be Harris v. Taylor-Greene for maximum terrible timeline.

If the electoral vote flipped the popular vote then I would agree with you, but that’s not the case. Both popular and electoral votes supported the contract by a thin margin.

Edit: I’m pretty sure this number is the LA only number. If you count NY and the national locals it was slim majority in favor, I’ll double check.

The participation margin in the election for my local was down from 98 percent for strike authorization to 80 percent for this contract ratification vote. A more concerted effort to influence that gap of 18 percent could’ve flipped the whole effort, but as is the case with politics writ large I think a lack of motivation and sustained interest prevented that.

I feel positive about the future of our industry, there’s been an enormous outpouring of support for our quality of life issues in the general public, and there’s a lot of demand for workers right now.

I’m happy that we stood out nationally as a labor success story. Now we have to stay committed and keep raising awareness beyond the contract negotiation.

uh, am i misreading the tweet or does it say that the popular vote rejected the contract by a thin margin?

im very much taken aback by the confidence with which people say that voting republican (or democrat) so strongly correlates with bigoted views.

its been shown over and over again in voter surveys that people have insanely incoherent personal ideologies. just completely contradictory views that you would think would fall apart on the most cursory examination, and yet....

I also saw people repeatedly mention the idea that the only way a republican voter could not be bigoted would be if they were "incredibly ignorant" of the gop's policies. do you understand the degree to which our engagement in politics is aberrant? people absolutely pull the lever, put on the bumper sticker, and spend zero neurons ever considering what policies actually result from their exercising of the franchise.

im not going deny that voting republican can be a reason to feel trepidation about a person's ideology, but it is absolutely not sufficient to form any conclusions about the degree of bigotry that person supports.

e: well, you can be pretty certain that person has bigoted attitudes, but only because they are an american shaped by the material conditions present in american society, but that applies to everyone.
