I don't think this is as unlikely on the Switch as you might think (Theorycrafting, of course); They've demonstrated with Super Mario Galaxy that Wiimotes can be substituted with JoyCons completely so long as they have a button to re-calibrate. And we know Wii games can work on the Switch, because again; SMG in 3DAS. It's just sitting in an emulator. Hypothetically we could well wind up with Wii games on NSO too at some point, and all the NSO Wiimote would need is an extra button to recenter the pointer while it's just the guts of a JoyCon under the hood.

The only Nintendo controller that's possibly unlikely to get a wireless NSO version is the Gamecube's, because Nintendo could just knock out more Smash Adapters and actual Gamecube controllers instead and call it a day.

Well I was told my OLED Switch is currently stuck in a processing center and it'd be weeks before I'd likely receive it due to the place being short-staffed...

And then it turned up this afternoon! :bubblewoop:. It's definitely not worth replacing an existing Switch if you have one already, but it is very nice! (For the record mine's getting replaced because it's a launch Switch with the dodgy fan and I can see a bulge in the corner of the screen and :yikes:.)

Edit: The new docking station is very nice and much better than the old one. Would've liked that third USB port kept somewhere on it though (the internal one is replaced with a sorely-needed Ethernet port at least), as if you've got the Smash adapter it's gonna take them both.

Edit2: Okay, one minor nitpick; If you're gonna go for the whole monochrome colour scheme Nintendo, why not use the white JoyCon covers from the Skyward Sword set rather than the regular black ones? They pair so nicely with the new white JoyCons! :colbert:

My N64 controller arrived today, and my favourite touch that nobody else seems to notice/care about is they actually distributed the weight in this thing towards the back like it's got a rumble pak attached. It's still lighter, but the balance is tipped just enough to have that familiar feel to it.

I died lots at every boss but eventually I learned their patterns and succeeded. You'll get em don't worry!

I've honestly found Metroid Dread frustrating at times. The devs don't seem to get that projectile attacks from bosses are meant to be minor nuisances (if not shootable for ammo and health) rather than serious threats, and fights like Kraid's are less fun than they could be because you get stuck dealing with what should be minor hits instead carving off entire energy tanks The belly shots in Kraid's case. The only times projectiles have been shootable is when they're clearly pulling from older games; Kraid's nails, and the Ring Beams on the Mother Brain-esque core units. Some of the later bosses also wear out their welcome because they REALLY want you to hit that counter attack to dump damage into them, and if you gently caress up that chance it just drags out the fight considerably as the entire phase repeats for another go rather than just being a cool extra thing you can do. I'm at Raven Beak and it's a slog of a fight because of how long it feels just to get to that second phase... and then there's a third phase on top of that all wearing you down with gently caress-all recovery items given. I swear someone selected the quantity of health drops in a boss fight based off looking at prior Metroid games, and nobody told them that Dread bosses hit much harder on-average. What you get back isn't going to account for even a single extra hit.

I'm at the final boss and I can only really say I mostly like Dread. It's overall a good game, but I'm hoping they learn from this one to do even better for the next. One of their other big problems is someone in their level design loves arbitrary one-way passages and while it's fine while following the breadcrumb trail to the next upgrade or boss it's utterly tedious having to circle around a big chunk of the map because one door arbitrarily shuts behind you or a Grapple/Wave Beam block has landed in a place that blocks off an old route.

The problem is it feels like there's no margin for error to actually learn how to beat them. You just go from either full-health to dead with no wiggle room between because you made A Mistake. I don't think like every fight needs to have all damage nerfed, but I just feel a better range of damage dealt between the different attacks would balance them a bit better. Eating poo poo on a boss' big telegraphed swings is absolutely what should happen, but getting dinged a whole energy tank or more off small projectiles, when you don't necessarily have many E-Tanks to begin with for most of the game, is a bit unnecessarily harsh imo.

No, it wouldn't. (Though I fully agree the expansion pass is way overpriced).

The only games that ever sold well under the Virtual Console label on their own were the big Nintendo ones that everyone plays or tries for nostalgia's sake, so there'd be no incentive to try and get titles like Operation Winback on the platform because hardly anyone's going to buy it compared to, say, Mario Kart 64 and whoever owns or develops the hypothetical standalone eShop version loses money on that (and thus have no incentive to put anything else on the service). This has been a known problem since the Virtual Console in the Wii days, and migrating to a service model is the only reason we might see a broader selection than what got onto the Wii and WiiU stores.

Detective No. 27 posted:

I'm not a publisher. I'm not concerned with how well the individual games sell or sold for. As a customer, the Wii Virtual Console approach was a far better experience. The fact is their N64 emulation was better 15 years ago than it is today. Hackers were able to make a better native version of Super Mario 64 than both of the official versions on Switch. Ocarina of Time just got reverse engineered so expect an unofficial Switch port of that pretty soon. I get that Nintendo is a large corporation with it's own goals and a profit motive but it's gotta feel bad to find these small teams doing better work in their spare time.

Also NSO can't even use the memory pack function so it's not like they're doing any favors for stuff like WinBack. That would have been better served with an HD remake or something.

You're conflating two entirely different things; The fact that it's a service has no bearing on the quality of it (which is demonstrably inferior to the version of games on older consoles). Making them standalone would still have seen them built the exact same way off a standardized emulator, because they've been doing that since the WiiU eShop releases.
