theres also this thing from mayflash which looks like it would work as well. anyone have any thoughts. or prayers.

Can't say anything about fight sticks, but I used the Mayflash adapter for quite a while on my Switch and it works great. I mostly used it with a Wii U Pro Controller but I did test DS4s with it.

Ogre Battle was published by Enix, which means it's under Square-Enix's purview now. You're not gonna see it on SNESflix or 64flix - Squenix doesn't seem interested in the service at all - but they may get around to releasing an Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre collection on Switch at some point before the heat death of the universe. I'd have put money on those getting a remaster/remake before ActRaiser, but I guess not.

Assuming there is a remake/Pixel Remaster-ish situation going on, I'd buy it. Especially to convince Nintendo that further SMRPGs are a viable prospect. I dunno how likely or even possible that is though. I remember a job listing from Squenix a little while ago that some people were theorizing might be for a SMRPG remaster/remake, but I don't think anything has come of it yet, and if the nvidia leaks are true it could also easily have been for the Chrono Cross remaster.

Apparently FFX's coding is a mess. The reason some VA lines sound so awkward is apparently because the game expects all the voice lines to be the exact same length as the Japanese file, otherwise the game hard crashes. So in order to make the English VA work, they not only had to very carefully choose their translations and coach the VAs to get them to say lines at just the right speed, they had to speed up or slow down some lines in editing to make them exactly match. Likewise, apparently there's something in the horrible eldritch spaghetti code preventing Squenix from implementing a cutscene skip. The game probably explodes or something.

All-Out Attacks are Persona, specifically from 3 on. SMT has the Press Turn system, where hitting an elemental weakness essentially gives you an extra turn, and you can get an extra turn per party member you have. Except Strange Journey, which has Co-Op Attacks, which IIRC work kind of like All-Out Attacks, except you need party members of the same alignment.

You could get the PSP version, which came out in English, and play that on Vita if you're that interested in the game, or maybe wait for the Steam Deck if you've got a reservation on that. But afaik there haven't been any announcements regarding Switch ports. I think the most recent Trails related announcement was the one where they're using the Geofront translation as the official one for the Crossbell arc? Which is coming to Switch, IIRC.

My main problem is that I'm coming into the Metroidvania genre from games like Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow, and Super Metroid just feels so stiff compared to those two. It's not a game I played in my childhood, so I don't have any nostalgia for it coloring my perceptions or muscle memory for its particular challenges.

It's still a good game, don't get me wrong, but if I was compiling a top 5 list of SNES games, Super Metroid would not be on it.

Like I said, the game is still good, I was able to finish the game when I played it for (basically) the first time last month. It's just a little nitpick I have about the controls.

Also, it's weird that when you press Start, the game does not pause immediately. Enemies are still moving up until the point that the map screen appears. You can still get hit and even die in that time, and you can't do anything about it because you have no control after you pause.

Also I think you could buy the other story routes as DLC and I think it was actually cheaper than paying for a second cart.

Three Houses, the next FE game in the series, was all on one Switch cart, but still keeps the multiple story paths.

Close. The Press Turn system gives your party extra turns when you hit a weakness. Your party loses turns if you miss or hit a Null/Drain/Repel. Naturally this also works for the enemy the same way.

Persona 3's combat system caused combatants to gain the Down status effect if hit in their weakness in addition to the attacker gaining an extra turn and the possibility of getting an All-Out Attack if you knocked all the enemies down, but you could lose your next turn if you missed with a basic attack. This was dialed back in 4 and 5, and the Down status no longer causes you to lose a turn (though in 4 you could inflict Dizzy if you hit an enemy's weakness after they were Down, which caused them to lose a turn, but you didn't get the One More from it).
