Make sure to mention that Nintendo products are like NFTs. People scalp the heck out of the limited stock they decide to put out to the point where most Nintendo products are worth more than RSP and since Nintendo never marks down the prices of any first party or exclusive games, they stay full price until they're collector's items worth hundreds.

Nintendo is bad at supply and or demand, around this time last year I had to have bots set up to buy a Switch for my friend because other bots were buying the stock out the second it was available.

Then Amiibos and Animal Crossing Switches too, yeah. They'll ship 100 to a city where thousands want a product.

right but what about their NFTs
Amiibos and N64 controllers and limited releases of the Mario collection are the NFTs.

It was a dumb comparison, Nintendo is bad at supplying things so everything they release becomes a secondary market scam. It wasn't a literal comparison

I don't know if you're still looking but...

DQXI isn't a bad choice. I've only played DQ 8 but it's a cozy as poo poo series that doesn't break the bank in innovating anything wild and crazy. It's definitely a good starter for the genre.

I personally had a blast experiencing Final Fantasies 7 through 9 a couple of years back (was it last year? I can't remember). I've currently started 10. These are all great, except 8 which is super weird but worth checking out probably. Their mechanics are simple but more involved than what DQ offers in my opinion, unless 11 really changed up from 8. The writing is exactly what you'd expect from the genre and games like VII and X are rather fundamental. The playstation games have handy cheat modes too to get past their bullshit, so grinding is easier and you can speed through random battles.

Aside from that Octopath Traveller is a great throwback game. It lacks some quality of life factors especially in regards to random battles, but battling in the game is very fun and interesting. It's a job system which is a specific type of jrpg better represented by the Bravely Default series, FFV and FFX2. This allows for a bit more customization and very cool combos. I almost regret having traded it back in, but Octopath is definitely good for a playthrough.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a strategy JRPG, so the plot tropes are there and all, as is the leveling up, but the gameplay is rather different. I haven't played the latest one, and I have rather disliked the series since Awakening, but I did love it for a long time and people vouch for the last one. If you like strategy games could be a good way to get your feet wet.

The Single player is fun and "short". I ended up getting all the hero version of the weapons which requires you to beat every stage with every weapon. I would do this while talking with my folks on the phone (about an hour or so a week). The multiplayer is as competitive as you want it to be. The great thing about splatoon is that it's not about killing your opponents, though it helps, but rather painting. So if you just want to paint, and run at first sight, that's honestly not outright hurting your team.
My only real exposure to RPGs is my sister, she was a huge fan of Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, and Persona games. I got kinda into FF13 because I liked the side-characters but she kept telling me how Lighting was the worst protagonist ever and I think that was my first RPG outside of Pokemon but she knows the entire history of every JRPG ever, she was trying to get me to play a PS1 game called Legend of Dragon that came out when she was like three years old.

I just want something I can have some fun on a handheld and burn like 80 hours on over a couple months.

e: for context we're both Japanese but moved to America in 2003 but she embraced the culture more than I did, I was a teenager and she was six

The last time I bought into a JRPG at launch was FF13, I'd rather play something on the switch that's already well-received. Pokemon is also coming out soon and Platinum was my favorite entry in the series so I'll go with the Dragon Quest demo and the Diamond/Pearl remakes as a backup. It's not that I can't afford all these games, I just don't have the time to play more than one 100+ hour game a year

That seems like a sound plan. I keep forgetting DQ11 has a massive demo. And if you enjoy Pokémon, more power to you. I didn't enjoy Sword/Shield that much and frankly I think I'll only get remakes of Blue/Red from here on out because I've come to terms that I only like that franchise for its nostalgia factor these days.
I stopped at the Ruby/Sapphire remakes and X/Y games myself and that was just because I had a ton of time to waste in Uni but I grinded those out until I almost had every living pokemon at the time. Sun/Moon never captured me and neither did Sword/Shield

As far as Pokemon goes, Omega/Alpha and X/Y introduced mega evolutions and Sun/Moon introduced regional differences and Sword/Shield had both, kinda but mega evolutions were dumber. Either way most of them were just Gen 1-3 based with a handful of Pokemon past Diamond/Pearl that were paid attention to.

I said it before, I was a kid when Red/Blue/Green/Yellow came out and Platinum was my favorite game just because there was so much to do in single player. They're outsourcing this game so they're probably going to lean into the fun stuff of the series like Fire Red/Leaf Green, Heart Gold/Soul Silver, and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire were. They haven't missed on remakes yet and the base game of Diamond/Peal were already pretty fun

It's a great first game if you've never played one. It's not as scary as the first 3 or the one that was in a hospital, but it plays really well. If you end up liking it and want to go back and play the older ones the tank controls + lack of a lock-on on ghosts makes it much harder to play. Like going back to the original Resident Evil games after playing the remakes.

I haven't picked up the GTA trilogy, I didn't get to play them much when I was younger so I have no nostalgia but the rain effects I've seen give me motion sickness or something. Just make me feel dizzy and I can't even watch people playing it. What an awful looking update, was it done by a mobile company or something

Anyway, 15 hours into Dragon Quest XI and it's tons of fun. I bought a used copy from Gamestop and it was still $20 more than the X-Box and Playstation versions. c'mon Nintendo

They're great ports. Square flips a coin to decide if a remaster is gonna be good or not and that one landed well. That aside, you might wonder why you can't skip cutscenes, in the event you suffer a game over. Unfortunately the original game's code is put together by gum and toothpicks so they were unable to implement shippable cutscenes. Also the voice acting is awkward at times, partly because the English voice actors needed to make each line last no more and no less than the Japanese voice tracks.
I made my peace with this a long time ago when I moved to the US and got to see the english versions of shows I watched 2 or 3 years earlier. Goku seemed like a totally different character to me even if I was watching the exact same episode I had before

Angels make the ALDS this year, Ohtani strikes out 335, wins the Cy Young and finishes top-5 in HR and RBI, with a total WAR of 12.5.

In 2023, the wheels come off (i.e. the difficulty increased to Hall of Fame), Ohtani doesn't bat much during the first half of the year, the Angels get eliminated in the WCG by the Tigers, despite having acquired Clayton Kershaw at the trade deadline.

2024, after blockbuster trades for Yordan Alvarez and Jacob DeGrom, the Angels win the World Series and Ohtani wins the Cy Young while leading the AL in OPS.

2025, suddenly what the gently caress? Ohtani is aging?!? This cannot be possible. Merely Ruthian numbers this year, and the Angels lose in the ALCS to the hated Yankees.

2026 is a renaissance! Ohtani leads the majors in WHIP, ERA, and RBI. Wins his third MVP, although the aging Angels bow out in the ALCS once again BECAUSE THIS GAME GETS REALLY loving HARD

I tried playing the career mode with a custom character and for some reason it was super glitchy and the textures would just go completely wild whenever he was on the screen so I gave up playing the game after the free trial. I couldn't play the demo because for some reason my Switch/internet combo chugs along at a breakneck speed of 10 megabites an hour and there's no way I could've finished the download in the 12 hour window. It took me 30+ hours just to download MLB the Show

Weirdly if I go to my friend's place with the same internet provider and speed just a minute or two walk away the speed is fine. I even bought a new router and changed modems from my ISP and it's still the same issue I've had with 3 different switches since launch day
