i think its already been answered in a lot of ways but yes there is, but in the second wave feministic sense. to maybe make it a little more in raw terms: the penis is evil. the penis is a symbol of oppression and patriarchy, one meant to subjugate vaginas. the penis must be destroyed.

now of course if you realize genitalia doesn't define a person, that whole thing is silly. but there are a lot of actual old 2nd-wavey feminists who see the penis moving into spaces 'they fought for'. to them it doesn't matter anything else besides the fight against the penis.

in an extremely hosed up and weird perverse sense, you can almost kind of see the sad pathway that led to it. or rather you can see that it's sad that they've been blinded by raw genitalia determinism that they can't see the greater social structures associated with oppression that have nothing to do with a penis.

of course 'terf' gets thrown out as much as 'grift' and has lost a lot of meaning. many people called terfs are just transphobes and it seems dumb to apply it as freely as it has been.

I appreciate this post a lot and think it's a little sad that any female transphobe is now called a TERF because the classical definition of "second-waver who is so mad at the concept of penises and at Kids These Days that they have earnestly convinced themselves that all trans women are braving bigotry and violence and taking hormones daily for years just so that they can sneak into women's bathrooms and force lesbians to touch dicks" is so loving bonkers that it needs to be preserved

Seriously, find an original-recipe TERF (JK Rowling's mentions are a good place to find them) and talk to them about their beliefs and see how quickly they bring up public bathrooms. It is a pathological fixation

Second-wave feminism somehow still being a wedge issue is frustrating because older white ladies who have conservative viewpoints on every issue except abortion and the pay gap are one of the strongest demographics driving the "left" toward the right

If the GOP were smart they'd run Fiorina or something and tell her to talk about public bathrooms all the time. They'd easily hoover these second-wavers up and could just tell evangelicals to shut up and Vote Red No Matter Who

Imagine your wife telling you to calm down with the poo poo about trans people a little bit because you're getting a little fixated and it's offputting, and responding that it's too bad that she just doesn't have the same commitment to women's rights you do or something like that

Apparently the Women's March adapted their logo so it wasn't just a set of 3 identical barbie dolls, and TERFs objected to this because they loving love objecting to things, and there was a petard-hoist

I really don't want to join this conversation per se but "when did you stop beating your wife" is a famous example of a loaded question in that it is impossible to answer without admitting that one has beaten one's wife, and almost definitely not an accusation in context of ITT

Even if someone WAS arguing that trans people can never be questioned, which nobody is, the idea that they are taking this idea that pillars of the community should not be exempt from criticism on the basis of their beloved status, and applying it to "all trans people" rather than the celebrity YA author they are reflexively defending is simply flabbergasting to me :psyduck:

How can you possibly think the one of these two who is closer to the sacred unquestionable pillar of the community in your analogy is the second one :psyduck:

It started out with someone contending that they don't want trans women in bathrooms (ofc) because what if they had to wash out bloody underwear in the sink, can't have trans women around for that, and the natural response to this is "why not" but the more interesting question is "what are you doing washing your bloody underwear in the sink in a public bathroom" and they've spent days and days doubling down on it repeatedly

I kind of feel like this published article about a NYT recipe's name upsetting the author by reminding her that women are culturally discouraged from proposing marriage themselves says less about gender roles and more about the state of American politics mostly being about Americans complaining about perceived slights to themselves in their consumed media rather than about, say, an ongoing ethnic cleansing campaign in the middle east with the full-throated backing of our democratically-elected government but I would probably get in trouble for saying that in a lot of contexts
