In the cycles of technology and societal trends vs people finding ways to circumvent them, Twitter doesn't appear to know rhyming slang, so calling someone a berk is fine, but 'oval office' is almost an immediate ban. I dunno it's nice to see traditions adapt and evolve.

Comrade Fakename posted:Monbiot is right in that people should give him some slack for saying a bad thing once which he’s acknowledged was bad and has been decent and generally on-side otherwise. However, he doesn’t really appreciate that “people” in this case are just a handful of particularly aggro left twitter members, and more generally that being on the internet means that someone’s always going to dig out your dirty laundry. I think it’s really a generational thing, if he’d grown up online and on forums like most of us he’d easily recognise that nobody ever truly forgets, and you just have to own up to bad poo poo and chill out. Yer, there’s a lot of handwringing in the replies to him from blue tick commentators essentially saying ‘a collective political memory is mean and off putting’. If Iain Dale or JOB or the ‘Corbyn’s ordering Zyklon’ lot start to publicly acknowledge the Tories are scum and hurting people like them then it’s not OK to point out their complicity in the harm. gently caress em.

goddamnedtwisto posted:I feel like getting anyone dumb enough to think they don't need to be vaccinated out of the NHS is going to do quite a lot to improve patient safety, to be honest. We wouldn't tolerate anyone saying "Actually I don't need to wash my hands because germ theory isn't proven yet" in a patient-facing role, why the gently caress would we trust anyone trying to "Well actually" literally every health authority on earth? I think the principle is good, but the execution is poor. If the unions are backing a carrot approach on this, then back the unions with more carrots, not a shiny new stick.

Between this, SWERFism, and this weird movement of infantalisation of adults between 18-25(?) where 'any perceived imbalance of power between individuals is automatically coercive and abusive', poo poo's going to get so much worse before it gets better.

Just overlapping between your run of the mill religious psychos, anti-porn lobbyists and terfs. The SNP questionnaire is probably a good example, or the Durham uni thing? There are legit questions to be asked, and nothing is above scrutiny, but there's a weird tact of 'if you want to educate people on this, you're secretly looking to exploit them'.
