Surely not paying for work is illegal (unless it is clearly a voluntary position)?

I remember when I worked for a dodgy oval office in Paisley he employed me for a week and then stopped all contact with me, refused to pay me for my weeks work and then by the time he had lost the tribunal he declared bankruptcy, sold the pub, put his other restaurants in his wife's name and got out of paying me (and all the other staff he'd done similar to) that way. And he's still getting nice write ups from various pub publications. Also had a guy who was a clear money launderer refuse to give me my annual leave because he'd declared bankruptcy on the restaurant and then opened it up the next day under his wife's name, so technically I hadn't accrued any annual leave. I also phoned the DWP to find out that I was never on their books and the payslips I was being given were forgeries and they were pocketing the tax and NI for themselves.

gently caress I don't miss working in pubs and restaurants.

I don't think "the public don't care about it" is the real reason. I think the press don't care about it and dont want looking into blatant corruption to be a thing that's treated seriously so they'll mention it in passing and then move on. If the press wants you to care you'll care. If they have to smother you in coverage you'll loving care, damnit.

I mean the press spent 1 week talking about the blatant corruption within the tory party that's been going on for a decade and it caused the first major dip for the Conservatives of Starmer's leadership. Now they've moved on and things return to normal. If the press wanted to they could wipe the tory party off the face of the earth within a month.

Yeah I honestly struggle to understand the outrage on this, as if Tories openly laughing in our faces hasn't been standard practice for over a decade.

I have been thinking about this for a while, and I think it's because it breaks kayfabe in such a way where there's no way to pretend it wasn't open contempt. Usually they can present a bare fig leaf of self defence and no matter how pathetic it is the press will go along with it to some level. And with Corbyn gone and him being replaced by a guy who's somewhere to the right of David Cameron they don't have to do the whole "The Prime Minister has been caught dodging taxes, should Corbyn resign over this? " routine.

People will go along with any old bollocks so long as you give them the bare minimum of cover for it.
