This is what happens when rightwing christians think nothing bad will ever happen to them if they believe in Jesus because he'll bless them and protect them as a reward for their faith: They need to come up with some explanation for why something bad happened to them or why they're not getting all the blessings Jesus promised them, and that's where all these poo poo conspiracies come from and why they're so eager to believe people who push them.

Because it makes them feel like they are part of the "in" group if they have something like a coded chant? That kind of thing seems pretty important to conservatives

there is a large segment of conservatives who see themselves as the party of "decency" as defined by a superficial reading of mid-20th century middle american protestant values in such a way that swearing in public is a worse crime than actually harming someone

these were not the same people yelling "gently caress your feelings" at trump rallies, they are the type of conservatives who found trump distasteful but gritted their teeth and voted for him anyway because they have been trained to see the other party as atheist "socialists"*, which is a process that occurred over decades due to the work of think tanks and media manipulation, and isn't tied to any one specific electoral cycle

White conservative men need something to set them apart from white liberal men because they're both the same race and gender, which makes it harder for the former to identify the "enemy".

Juvinile rebellion, like that kid in 3rd grade that learned a word that sounds like a swear but is otherwise innocuous in every way and uses it intentionally as a swear but will argue "It actually means ____!" when pulled up on it.

The quick history: it originated from a NASCAR race where the crowd was chanting "gently caress Joe Biden!" When a reporter covering the the race in person for NBC was asked about it by the studio reporters, she said the chant was "Let's go Brandon!" Brandon being a winning driver in the race. This got picked up by the usual right-wing crazies as an example of media censoring the right, instead of simply being an individual NBC reporter trying not to swear on air.

It appeals on multiple levels, as DeadFatDuckFat said it's a coded phrase for the in-group, a reminder of the "bias" of the media, and a smooth-brained attempt at ironically turning of the phrase back on liberals. Which doesn't work because there never was a conspiracy to cover up the "gently caress Joe Biden" chant to begin with.

Edit: Good point. Also liberals don't reflexively cover for Biden, he's not the Trump of the left or anything so again it doesn't work.

also biden isn't even that popular on the left. just as there are conservatives who found trump distasteful but voted for him out of fear of his opponent, the same is true of biden and the hodge podge of liberals, neoliberals, robber barons, cosplay socialists, and in a few rare cases actual socialists who more or less make up the democrat base - many of whom have no problem saying "gently caress joe biden" themselves and do so regularly.

george h w bush was not particularly popular but dana carvey's impersonation of him was huge

i think jimmy carter was also kind of a biden-esque figure, hated the people who didn't vote for him and barely tolerated by those who did. but now he's turned it around in his old age and everyone thinks he's a cool guy

I hate to be the one to break it to you but prisons are overwhelmingly filled with minorities, due to a wide variety of reasons ranging from outright incentives to target and put them there, to plain old systemic racism built into the fundamental core of the country. Prison is one of the many tools that has been wielded specifically to disenfranchise "certain demographics", because america is a hellcountry that incentivizes jailing and stripping voting rights off people who wouldn't vote for you.

Minorities in america tend not to vote republican that much overall, aside from weird little demographic pockets, like the cuban republicans.

https://www.npr.org/2020/03/12/815097758/new-survey-finds-unexpected-political-opinions-among-incarcerated-people

quote:

LEWIS: There are several key things, one being that people in prison are not a monolith. And so often the conversation around felony disenfranchisement is framed as a partisan issue. And so conservative media and Republicans often say, oh, this will definitely support the Democrats. But we found that that doesn't seem to be the case. You know, people are - identified as Democrats, people identified as Republicans and, again, as independents. And so folks in prison are not a monolith by any means.

CHANG: How did that break down, roughly, the partisan makeup of the people who responded?

LEWIS: What we found was that the party affiliations tracked very, very closely to race. And so by and large, black respondents identified as Democrats or independents, and white respondents identified as Republicans or independents. And both groups - for both groups, independents were overrepresented or sort of more represented than in the general public.

So if we assume white = conservative in KY,

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...C9C9b5FBUmFm6Au

76% of the prison population in KY is white! Nevermind that they're overwhelmingly poor and opiod-addicted! Death penalty's back on the table, boys!

He had quite a few supporters. He was in a weird place as he and Reagan were primary opponents in Reagan’s first campaign and he was brought on as VP to bring the more moderate Republicans on board with Reagan. During the primary he was correctly calling Reagan’s trickle down garbage “voodoo economics” and Bush and Reagan didn’t work well together or trust each other much for several years.

When Bush ended up being a one-term President it basically sealed the Republicans behind Reagan’s vision and killed the moderate (and liberal) factions in the GOP and helped us get where we are now. I kind of wish Bush had beaten Clinton. Reagan’s vision weakened, no Hillary running in 2016, and no Benghazi or email ‘scandals’. It sounds kind of nice.
