Welcome to стаят!

Welcome to стаят is a game jam game for the 2021 Winter Scene Jam https://itch.io/jam/winter-scene-jam, a small game jam started in the Awful Jams discord.
The goal of the jam is to have a chill time and make something wintery, and I started developing Welcome to стаят (Stayat, but it looks like start!).
In the game you drive around in a Lada Niva-ish vehicle, lost in a snow storm in an eastern european-ish place that has strange pieces of art on display:
https://i.imgur.com/PTMdVqs.mp4

I'm posting this here (with mod approval) because I'm hoping others want to contribute 2d, 3d, music or whatever artwork. All the "functional" props are low poly and mostly untextured so the art can pop more. I'm not looking specifically for wintery things or even things that would necessarily fit in an urban environment as such. I view the town more as a place where artists have gathered and have a free hand at doing whatever.

The video above shows an example of how 2d art can be integrated:

Billboard on the right, apartment building on the left. I can scale both for different aspect ratios easy enough. I would appreciate if the art had a signature but I can add a separate sign for that as well (As I just noticed I have yet to do in the above, the cranes are "Birds by no-waves" from https://www.deviantart.com/no-waves/art/Birds-877099268

3d art can be implemented in a number of ways depending on what the model is, as long as I can get it into unity without too much fuss. A car could be on the side of the road, a character model maybe a sculpture with spotlights around it or the like.

For music I'm thinking like a mp3 player system, every time a new track starts playing a little infographic with the song info pops up and the player gets controls to skip through the music. If there's enough music that it makes sense I'd maybe separate it into radio stations like GTA except without a DJ.

In short I'm trying to make a wintery art museum you drive around.

FAQ:
How do I know you will actually release anything? Who are you anyway?
I have participated in 2 game jams before this and released one small game outside of that. Not very impressive resume as these things go but I only started doing this I think a year ago:
https://tobekko.itch.io is my itch profile though the games aren't very impressive.

Why should I contribute? What do I get?
I'd say exposure but honestly I don't know if a lot of people will even play this. The jam has, as of me writing this, 10 people who have entered. Don't do it if you don't want to is honestly my best answer.

Do I have to make something new?
Nope, I'm not requiring anyone to do more work, if you want to make something specific for the jam I'd appreciate it of course.

Is my art good enough?
Just look at the models I'm already using that I made myself: Yes your art is good enough.

How will I be credited?
How do you want to be credited? I'm right now thinking that 2d art has a signature either in the art itself or as a separate sign, same with 3d. Music gets the pop up when the track starts playing. Separately I'd also probably make a .pdf file with all the art and credit so anyone who wants can look at that outside the game.

I'm more of a wordsmith...
Well, turn your words into an image somehow and I can put it on the side of a wall.

How much art can I submit?
Right now I'm limiting it to 2 visual pieces and 2 audio pieces per contributor though if I don't get a lot of takers I may increase this limit.

When is the deadline for submissions?
I'm going to have to stop taking submissions on probably the 28th depending on how much I get.

How do I submit?
Either PM me or post in this thread the art and/or music you would want to submit and if you have any ideas on how you want them to be presented.

Also keep in mind that all the media of the game I post is subject to change etc, I'm still working on making more props and need to tune the car handling and lighting but I feel like I have the vibe correct right now.
If there is so much interest I can't implement all the art in time for the game jam I will work on a first come first served basis and might make an extended cut release as it were after the jam (I'd probably take a break first though)

Thanks, and also thanks to whoever fixed the thread title, apparently the forums don't like cyrillic!

These sound great, I don't know if I'm being stupid here but I can't see a download option on soundcloud? I'm going to work on the music system next, let me know if you want these credited as they appear in soundcloud.

This looks intense! And the car is very reliable until you flip it which I've done more times than is reasonable.

Oh shoot I forgot to post my art here. I had two pieces i wanted to add but I can't find them. Instead please feel free to use literally any of my art dome pieces. Being part of a game jam game seems like a fitting fate for my hastily produced art!

I don't have a signature because I don't really care. Feel free to credit them to 'sh' though, if you do that.

Oooh some good stuff in there. There are a few pieces I'm mulling over but I'm going to try to get the music player done before I try to see what they'll look like in game.

Since I haven't gotten that many submissions yet I'm going to say screw it to the deadline, if anyone submits something after the 28th and I manage to get it in on time it's all good. Christmas stuff has kept me a bit busier than I had expected this week so I don't have much to show off yet.

Holy hookrat Sally smoking crack in the alley!

a piece I started but didn't submit for the art dome:

Cultivated Apron (Tented)

It was going to be the art for a Magic or Pokemon-like card, but I never finished the card part lol. You can credit it to Allison Banks, which would have been the fake art credit on the finished card.

Nice, I think I can cut this out and use it somewhere.

This worked!

I don't have much visual updates to show off, I'm going to start integrating more art today. Worked mostly on under the hood things and the menu/ui which isn't exactly something to show off and also killed 4 hours trying to get speed tree to work like I wanted it to but I'm resorting to manually placing trees instead. Hopefully work is slow this week so I can get more stuff done, but I'll have some visual stuff to show off in a few days either way.

I got most of the stuff in the game now:

https://i.imgur.com/MwSRfbJ.mp4

I'm going to spend the next days on making the layout of the map and hopefully make some alternative buildings because just having the same apartment building over and over is no fun.

(I didn't have time to implement the bear yet, I'm sorry!)

Also the video shows a little of the menu and the song info panel that comes up when a new song starts playing.

I lost a lot of time chasing down time savers I ended up unable to use so I kind of had to scale back a bit, but the map is almost done, just need to place a few props still but I might be able to get a first playable build out today.
There's still some car related issues I should fix but I don't know if I can get that done before the deadline. I also would like a greater variety of props so if I get extra time I'll implement those but that's not looking likely right now to be honest.

A first build is now up:
https://tobekko.itch.io/welcome-to-stayat

I had some issues that basically destroyed all my lighting and fog settings so I need to rebalance them again, there's also some control issues and the whole world is rather sparse but it's a start.

If people have more submissions I can add them and if they want me to link to their profiles somewhere let me know.

(I also wanted to make an in-game credit scroll but I couldn't make time for that yet. If I keep working on this post-jam I'll make it a priority though.)

Not sure if it helps but I made this geometric sculpture thing.

Can download it from my itch.io page. I've used itch.io for some SA jams previously.

FBX inside the zip. Should drop straight into Unity. Throw on a couple materials and it should look fine.

Nice, yeah I can take a look later (hopefully tomorrow). Are there ready material slots on it? If you've assigned materials in blender you can just drag and drop unity materials in those slots in unity, it's super nice! Otherwise I can open it up in blender and see what I can do.

It's untextured with no materials, seemed like the safest option. The fbx has a couple sub objects so it shouldn't be too hard to do something with.

Alright, I'll see if I can get the time to implement it before the deadline. There is going to be a stream of these games somewhere at some time I'll post about if I can get the deets.

Meanwhile I made a new build to fix some issues:

EDIT: Made another build with the sculpture and some more music: https://tobekko.itch.io/welcome-to-stayat/devlog/330283/v-03

The jam is over now so I'm taking a bit of a break from this project. I want to thank everyone who submitted things.
If I get more submissions I'll expand the map and keep working on this, maybe implement some more features and interactive objects. I had a lot of cut ideas as is usual for game jams.

Alright so, I decided to learn a new game engine, godot, because I might be running a "learn how to make games" class at the local education center next fall and it's just easier than unity.
So right now I'm learning how to do 2d in godot and then I'll move on to 3d and then what I plan on doing is porting this project to godot.

This means I will need to re-do drat near everything except the meshes once I get that far, so it's going to be a while.
