Flying drones in a city, on unplanned routes, at night, out of line of sight, over uninvolved members of the public, is such a safety and regulatory nightmare that I can't imagine how anyone would ever get permission for it without specific legislation.

If the UK follows the new EASA rules or similar for UAS it'd require a named operator who has qualified on the special "certified" license, the full rules for which are not yet published but based on the old system it'll be expensive and time consuming to achieve and require regular logged flights and maintenance to stay current on. Possibly you'd be able to get blanket approval for limited missions following a specific flight profile, but unless vulnerable women stick to preapproved routes you'd need each flight planned and signed off, seeking permission from the aviation authority beforehand.

The whole idea would be laughable except that it's the cops so I guess the law doesn't really matter and they'll hand over the controls to whoever fancies a shot.

I hate that I hear normal people talking about Bitcoin and NFTs now. In 2010 when it was just a thing for dumb nerds on the Internet it was funny, but now I get people standing up at work to talk about some idiot project using "blockchain" in a vaguely defined way for dubious benefit and apparently we're all meant to take it seriously.

Nobody has tried to citizen's arrest Blair for war crimes in ages now. Maybe this knighthood is what's needed to get that arrest bounty going again.

Christ. I want to pay for a music streaming service next year, but according to this, Amazon are currently the service that pay artists the most:

https://twitter.com/MrTomGray/status/1251415657486471175?t=ZKqEO2AMkQbc6N7LslI-iA&s=19

Is that right? Are there any other caveats to keep in mind? The missus wants to get spotify because you can get a couples deal and share playlists, but i'd rather a service that pays artists more. Of course on balance they're all pretty loving shocking but the least I can do is choose the least poo poo option.

And no, I'm not carrying a plex server round in a backpack.

Bearing in mind that those streaming service payouts cover everyone with a share of royalties: publishers, writers, performers, etc., and that super massive artists get much more generous deals than everyone else, the actual amount your favourite band makes from a stream is far less than the numbers suggest. As far as I can tell, buying a single album from Bandcamp for $7 or so probably gets more money directly to the artist than a lifetime of streaming.

e: not to suggest that for instance songwriters are less deserving of payment than performers. Obviously they get paid if you buy from Bandcamp too, as so publishers if artists have a deal with them rather than releasing the music themselves.

But the other problem is I can only imagine how absolutely insane the takes would get if Corbyn started any party with the word socialist in the name.

Even that's no guarantee - Europe is littered with centrist and centre-right "socialist" parties. You could probably start the wildly successful "Hang Landlords from Lampposts, Yes We Do Mean Literally Party" and within a few decades find your MPs arguing how the party has a long, proud tradition of supporting renters by ensuring a strong buy-to-let market and flexible housing contracts.

Did imgur change their interface yet again? It's harder than ever to get a straight up link to the image you want to post.

Also pretty cheeky to refuse to answer questions in Parliament, who I rather think have precedence over the police.

Happy Burns Night, folks. I hope you've all got your haggises and drams ready to celebrate our beloved bard, fondly remembered for such noble poems and songs as this.

quote:

CUMNOCK PSALMS
As I leuked ower yon castle wa’,
I spied a grey goose & a gled;
They haed a fecht between them twa,
An O, as their twa hurdies gade.--

Chorus:
Wi a hey ding it in, & a how ding it in,
An hey ding it in, it’s lang to day:
Tal laretal, tallarietal Tal larietal, tal larie tay.

She strack up & he strack doun.
Between them twa they made a mowe,
An ilka fart that the carlin gae,
It’s fower o them wad fill a bowe.

Wi a hey ding it in &c.

Temper your tail, Carlin, he cried,
Temper your tail by Venus’ law;
Dooble your dunts, the dame replied,
Wha the deil can hinder the wind to blaw!

Wi a hey ding it in &c.

For were ye in my saidle set,
An were ye weel girt in my gear,
If the wind o my erse blaw you oot o my oval office,
Ye’lI never be reckoned a man o weir.--

Wi a hey ding it in &c.

He placed his Jacob whare she did piss,
An his ballocks whare the wind did blaw,
An he grippet her fast by the goosset o the erse
An he gae her oval office the common law.

I think it's pretty cool that falconer is a real and modern profession. The Dutch police were briefly using sea eagles to capture drones flying where they shouldn't be, but apparently they gave it up after a year because there just wasn't that much demand for massive drone-catching raptors.

Anyway here are pictures of some red kites that I took when I was in Scotland around Christmas. Went to a feeding site and there were at least 50 of them flying around, swooping in to grab chunks of meat, and sitting in the trees digesting.

Work from home tax loophole to be closed after it cost Treasury £500 million

No surprise there, but if you wanted to angry up the blood on a cold Friday morning then this should do it:

This country is a disease, and not just because of the literal disease stalking every corner of it.

They hate work from home so much. A lot of businesses have probably saved a lot of money with their employees paying rent, internet and electricity costs for their workspaces. This is not very good, businesses should be paying those costs. Nonetheless, WFH is that rare thing that has in some environments benefited both employers and employees. But it's bad for the most important segment of society, landlords, so it must go.

You could easily outsource your legislature overseas. Why pay MPs £80k plus expenses when we could simply elect a Parliament in Mexico who'd do the job for £25k a head? Sell the Palace of Westminster to a property developer and just rent them a coworking space in Oaxaca or something.
