Re: the Anarchist Cookbook, it's available on UK Amazon in kindle, hardback and paperback forms. That's what I don't get about this book being used to send people to prison for terrorism offences.

I'm reminded about a 'terrorist cell' that was raided in Plymouth 10+ years ago. It was heavily reported about in the media, and iirc they were someone in their early 20's, an 18 year old, and two 16 year olds. Police confiscated terrorist propaganda, terrorist training manuals, weapons - including an AK47, knives and explosives.

The four 'terrorists' were held in police custody for up to a month under the new anti terrorism laws, and the bomb disposal trucks were at the property for days as were forensic police.

The terrorist propaganda and training manuals were in fact political text books for one of the guy's politics degree. The weapons were a couple of BB guns, and the AK47 was a replica that was screwed to the wall as a work of art. It wasn't even capable of firing caps. And the explosives? They were legally purchased fireworks for bonfire night. Oh, and the knives were literally the knives from the kitchen drawer.

They were eventually released without charge with the eldest staying in police custody for nearly the full 28 days iirc, though their release and innocence wasn't reported about heavily in the press. They were targeted because they were vocal anarchists, and the police and government wanted to send a message to appease the public. The psychological effects for the two 16 year olds were huge...

I think the first thing we did when my high school finally upgraded from Windows 3.11 to Windows NT (or was it Windows 2000? I forget, could even have been 98 for all I remember) & thus we had internet access was accidentally stumble upon the Anarchist Cookbook & print it out. Mostly I remember a lot of stuff about Phone Phreaking which sounded incredibly cool but was already out of date.

Comrade Fakename posted:

This isn't about voting, this is about organising. If, in an election, you have the choice of Labour and this new hypothetical Corbyn party, it's true that might not matter much which you choose.

But this isn't about that. Setting up a party takes up a huge amount of effort, manpower and money. All that would likely have to be diverted away from efforts to organise within the Labour party, and likely everyone involved would be proscribed and blacklisted from participating in the LP for a long time, if not forever. This means that a lot of the country's finite resource of dedicated activists would now be working on this instead of within the Labour Party, essentially indefinitely.

One of the big problems the left has had within Labour is a colossal Generation X-shaped hole. There's a bunch of old boomer lefties, like Jeremy himself, or John McDonnell and Diane Abbott. And there's obviously loads of Millennials (and even Gen Zers now) from the Corbyn movement. But there's almost no one born in the 60s-70s there because the left pretty much abandoned Labour in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. This is a large part of why the party is so hostile now - there's almost no one on the left who is middle aged, which is pretty much the prime of your life in political terms.

The issue is that giving up on Labour and starting a new party means losing yet another generation of leaders within it, making Labour even more right wing and solidifying that potentially for many decades. I don't want to debate how likely that can be avoided or if it's impossible for the left to succeed within Labour at all, ever, because we've been over it a million times in this thread. But my point is that setting up a new party is not a "no downsides" concept. There are significant things that can be lost by doing it. If you think it's worth it, fine. But there is significant risk involved.

And staying in Labour there is no hope, so hey, better to try & fail than accept that nothing can change.

I guess to explicitly answer that question, if you really need the incredible subtleties of what I said explained, I would say “pretty bad at the moment but still closer to actually effecting government than the left in any other party in this country’s history”.

I really don’t want to engage with you about this since you get so antagonistic and unpleasant about it, but neither you nor anyone else in this thread was saying that Labour had to die just two and a half years ago. That’s because the impossible that thing that could never happen ever ever was true then, the left held the leadership of the Labour Party. We can do that again, and to make it sustainable once we do, we need to build the infrastructure and leadership internally now so it’s not just weirdo right wingers controlling the party levers.

I get aggro about it because it's an important matter. Also because I just type in a hostile manner I guess, it's never really conscious, I guess I'm just a bit of an angry dick at heart.

Thing is, there's a difference between now and 18 months ago. 18 months ago the left hadn't yet voluntarily surrendered the reigns of the party to the Labour right by electing a Kieth. And now that they have it the Labour right won't give up control for another generation or more, like after Foot. The conclusion was "we gave Labour a chance and the Labour right proved they care more about stopping even the mildest form of social democratic policy than they do having a Labour left lead government". It was a worthwhile experiment that cost very little. I held back a lot of criticism I had of Labour & the leadership until after the 2019 election because I was willing to sacrifice ideological purity for something better.

But now we've done tried it and it failed for a variety of reasons. I just don't see the value in trying again and again and again at the same thing. This point would be less true if Corbyn & friends hadn't completely failed to use their support from the membership & for a while a NEC majority to reform the party democracy but like most other fights with the PLP they didn't even try. We weren't given the ability to force wreckers to stand down. The PLP still decide who gets nominated to be the next leader. gently caress man, Ian Murray was photographed at the CUKTIG launch practice run before chickening out & he never lost the whip or got deselected.

I do not think the Labour Party can be redeemed is what it comes down to. Part of this is obviously easy for me because I'm not a Labour person: I didn't vote Labour until after Corbyn was leader & it's hard to imagine me voting Labour again. I'm far to the left of any Labour MP since I dunno, Jimmy Maxton? And he left to lead the ILP as an actually separate party in the '20s IIRC. But part of it is just me going "yeah, things are loving bad out there for poor people, of which I am one, and I don't think we can wait for the Labour right to waste another 2 decades before getting another chance to do ANYTHING.

Like, we're at the point in my eyes where accelerationism is justifiable now because we're clearly already in such a lovely position that the slowly managed decline is no longer acceptable from a least worst point of view. But I'll grant that I'm an extremist in that sense.

Because yes, the SCG & the unions leaving Labour for a new party is a fantasy for several reasons, including that the SCG MPs are more in love with the concept of the Labour Party than they are with actual poor people. But the point that we're making is that it's no more of a fantasy than Labour being in anyway redeemable at this point.
