Scary Gary

Gary is a schlubby, sensitive vampire who has moved to the American suburbs.

His household includes his evil henchman Leopold, a monster with human parents:

Leopold inherited his mother's scientific bent, and conducts experiments in the basement of the house; one of these experiments is Travis, an optimistic head in a jar.

The household also contains Owen, a depressed ghost.

Leopold enjoys hanging out at a dive bar called The Hammered Henchman:

Leopold isn't all that impressed with Gary:

Gary is chronically single, but Leopold periodically dates the Fifty-Foot Woman, and he's also pursued by Beatrice, a creepy little girl with a crush on him. Other characters include a gay couple consisting of a pair of Frankenstein's monsters, Steve and Frank.

Some crossover action!

Watching kids knock down towers is the single reason for building them.

A truly bad comic.

Oh no, in the Lynniverse this is more proof that kids just wreck EVERYTHING and are so ungrateful for everything their elders try to do for them.

Dorothy: What's so funny?
Blanche: Oh, Marmaduke. Look at how he drives that car. I love my comics. Every day, "Marmaduke" and "Apartment 3G."
Dorothy: I haven't read "Apartment 3G" since 1961.
Blanche: Oh, well, let me catch you up. It is later the same day...

Wifey not paying the bills is just one more inconvenience this long-suffering old man has to put up with. He seems like the type who would tell her he was fine with her waiting to do the ironing till she was out of her sickbed, then wonder why she wasn't grateful.

Original Nancy may have had simple and similar gags but at least they weren't all exactly the same, and more importantly, original Nancy was fun. New Nancy is just oozing with cynicism and irritation. I've mentioned this before but there are so few New Nancy strips where characters are actually having fun or enjoying themselves, they're either annoyed/upset with whoever they're talking to, or just complaining about whatever. This makes it kind of a drag to read day after day because it just feels like nobody's allowed to like things in it. poo poo, even sometimes when characters are allowed to like things in it, they still aren't having fun. Look at the kid who enjoyed watching movies, every goddamn one of his strips was him trying to enjoy a movie and getting annoyed by Nancy being an rear end in a top hat.

I've said before that I actually do think the Sunday Nancy strips are really good, because they're not the same joke every time, and characters actually do silly things in them sometimes. But the dailies are just loving awful 95% of the time.

Adding to that -- new Nancy is so terribly prolix! Panel after panel of characters worrying about what other people do or what they think of them. It's like "what if the cast of Seinfeld hadn't met yet and were kids so they had to think all this poo poo instead of talking it out?"

Very goony quibble, but I hate how thick the linework is in Mark Trail; it makes everything seem that much cruder when the art is already shaky.
