I'm actually a little mad the first season of YuYuYu had a happy ending, because the theming and thesis of the show is so bittersweet that pulling a happy ending out at the last second just cheapened it and made it feel like the writers didn't understand their own show

The second season fixed it all and then some though, so it's hard to be too upset

It's pretty bad, yeah. Beyond diminishing the impact of every sacrifice up to that point--especially Karin's, otherwise the most affecting moment in the show--it trades the established adapting-to-disability theme for... well, nothing. Like you said, it's like they didn't understand their own show.

I'm about three-quarters of the way through Gundam '79 right now and it's mostly been really good. The initial arc is a bit underbaked, but as soon as White Base lands on Earth it becomes a gripping military serial. Episode premises take a turn for the bizarre -- Gundam pilot Amuro visits his mother; White Base runs out of salt; a bunch of draftees on hoverskis coat the Gundam with time bombs -- and are executed better than ever; the action, freed from the weightless void of space, starts to really excel; the writing becomes obsessed with war's strange moral dilemmas, which it treats with a fascinating intensity. It's some of the best television I've ever seen.

Unfortunately, as of episode 33 White Base has gone back into space and the show has returned to a wobbly 7/10. Tragic!

Stroheim is more of a third party than an ally, IMO, but I see what you mean. I don't think the franchise is particularly extreme in that regard, though; villain-to-hero is hardly an uncommon trope, and in most parts it's hard to find villains-turned-party-members who do anything particularly heinous beyond attempting to kill the lead. Stroheim is an outlier in that regard.

Tamami Kobayashi is probably the closest someone skirts while still being a criminal and being an ally to the main group.

Annasui is admittedly pretty hosed up. I forgot Hazamada even existed, to be honest; after looking at the wiki, he appears to come back as an ally for all of two episodes. Fugo goes from an ally to ~~an enemy~~ a neutral party written out of the show, which is the opposite of a sicko turning into a hero. Tamami's scam is pretty nasty, but he ultimately just bilks people out of money. All in all, I still think JoJo's redemption arcs are pretty normal

Calling them "arcs" was probably an overstatement on my part. Redemption tends to be a two-step plan: (1) JoJo and company beat the antagonist up; (2) they stop being evil. (Plan may not be available to all antagonists. Contact the Speedwagon Foundation for details.) I think the only real redemption arc is Iggy gradually overcoming his cowardice.

I wonder why people don't want to be mods on Something Awful, the forum where:
- flaming is legal, allowing posting grudges to escalate until people are invoking each others' divorces
- in addition to your own subforum, there are 20 others, any one of which could launch an e-crusade and force you to put out the flamewar (that's right, Pet Island, I'm talking about you)
- every probe you make is exposed to gawking onlookers, guaranteeing at least one unhinged qcs thread per quarter
- permabans and forumbans can only be applied to people who have solemnly sworn never to make a good post
- a quarter of the userbase thinks mods are literally cops

It's like it was intentionally set up to be unmoderatable

I don't see what's ??? about that quote. He expected, and wanted, people around the world to interpret the show in different ways--maybe he thought the foreign internet was different enough from the Japanese internet that people participating in the former would receive something other than the "intended" message. This didn't happen; everyone interpreted the show the same way, denying him the variety of interpretations he hoped for.

That's my interpretation based on the quote as you've written it here; I haven't seen the original
