Hi goons it’s your friendly neighborhood white noise poster coming at you from the city of angels. It’s a balmy 63 degrees and the air pleasantly clear. Let’s get down to brass tacks. I think PC gaming has run its course as a main hobby and has mostly been something I do out of habit since it reliably moves time forward and puts the chattery anxious mind at ease. I still think there’s a time and place for it, but it’s not releasing those brain juices like back in the days of source engine games. I’ve thought of some hobbies I can maybe pick up. Maybe I can find some fulfillment in these or maybe you can share your successes in finding wholesome activities as well. First up: Archery? I knew a girl from college who did this and she made it seem really interesting. It looks cool and there’s immediate feedback on how well you’re doing when the arrow goes thwump into the hay stack. I can probably do cool party tricks too if there’s an apple nearby and someone brave enough to trust me. I did a quick search and it seems like there’s a number of ranges nearby. Dunno what the startup costs would be if I’m renting equipment and if I require a trainer. Oh yeah, I did this in highschool for PE. Some kid shot his foot. 3d modeling for 3d printing? this one I already have a beefy computer for, though honestly I’m not sure how beefy you need. This idea comes from buying 2 of my friends 3d printed (and painted) things from the internet off Etsy and they both fell in love with it. (One of theirs got theirs already, the other one hasn’t but I’m sure he will - he has to). 3d printers look like they can run up to 1k and lord knows how much more for the filaments, but maybe I can start with making 3d-printing-friendly objects (a door wedge, a dildo, a laptop stand) and then work my way up before throwing down 1k on a printer. I dunno, what do you think? Geocaching I did this in college with my roommate. As a brown person it might be problematic for me circling around trees or power poles looking for a little capsule with a joke in it, but I guess I’m dorky enough in person that maybe that’ll prevent me from being gunned down by the boys in blue. This was a moderately fun activity for getting out of the house. I haven’t checked to see what the geocaching scene in LA looks like. May be more difficult since every bit of free land that isn’t a park is owned. legos this comes up in my head often but this seems like it can be ruinously expensive. I’m also not sure if thatll attract Grindr hotties when I put “adult Lego fan” on my bio. I always wanted to build a Lego t-34 or nuclear power plant reactor though. Again, love to hear your suggestions, successes in hobbies, or insults about my ideas. Cheers.

If lego seems appealing but you'd rather be regarded as a man-child rather than a child-child maybe walk the same path as many post-video game men and get into miniatures. Warhammer et al is expensive af but just good old fashioned landscape/battlescape/train/town modelling is a rewarding creative outlet and incredible cheap if done correctly. Also the overlap of "3D printer enthusiast" and "hobby modelling enthusiast" has gotten huge in the past few years so food for thought.

To add on to this, I create dioramas of what I imagine my death will be like. The funeral, the hospital, my home and family going on without me. It's kind of fun getting all the little details and hiding little easter eggs like a 'pulled plug" in the hospital or a helium mask prototype in the attic. I'll post some pics when I get home

Archery is cool, you don't really need a trainer unless you plan to compete in the Olympics, and if you go to outdoor ranges you can get any sort of help from fellow archers. Probably about 300$ start up cost for a cheaper bow, a set of arrows (do your research first) and maybe a glove, can easily double that if you want fancier or easily moddable bow for when you want to move up the poundage.

Last year, the internet told me it was pondering orbs. Maybe painting rocks and leaving them places? Resin art is pretty popular too, if you're looking to make your own orbs like an old person.

I did archery for a while and it is a fuckawful hobby. Costs a fortune, is boring and repetitive, you gotta spend hours loving with gear and it attracts just the worst people. Hyper competitive jerks, racist history nerds, fat boomers, people with real-deal crippling autism, gear fetishists and rule pedants abound. Also every now and again the string will hit you and it hurts.

I started archery last year and thought it wasn’t too bad. A good starter bow and a few arrows weren’t that much and I could reliably hit the target from the furthest spot at my range which was fun. It’s just that I’m too drat lazy to actually get myself to go to the range. I think I like the repetitive nature of it. I wish I had a longer backyard.

Lino cuts/wood block printing. Basically anything you carve, apply ink a print with. It's a cheap barrier to entry & if you start small you can get a quick turnaround from design to carving to printing. I use a wine bottle to apply ink to the print block and my heaviest books to weigh down the block on the paper for good contact.

Combine the hiking and nerdery of geocaching with the wallet-sucking of Lego by doing Summits On The Air! Technically all you need is a technician amateur radio license and a $20 transceiver, but you can have all kinds of fun designing and building (or buying) antennas, radios, and other gear. Plus, other people on top of mountains will look at you funny and ask what you're doing! Don't worry, they're not actually interested, just weirded out.
