if i had to guess my guess that a good chunk of BYOB has been Extremely Online for a long time which means that like me, you've probably been in a bunch of little niche internet circles over the years. this thread is for sharing weird/fun stuff from those circles that no one else has any context for the impetus behind this was that i thought about speelbog stoolborg so here is that story there's a facebook group that's still around called "Cool Freaks' Wikipedia Club" which is for finding cool and weird stuff on wikipedia. toast sandwich, list of lists of lists, list of inventors killed by their own inventions, aptronyms/inaptronyms, etc. this group spawned a whole community and a million spinoff groups about everything, but one of the most popular ones was "coolfreaks.jpg" which is maybe the equivalent of a pics thread in an SA subforum. about 5 years ago someone posted to coolfreaks.jpg with the discovery that his credit report had not only his government name ("Best Name"), but another name entirely, which was determined as his "Worst Name". the Worst Name was SPEELBOG STOOLBORG he had no idea where this came from and it blew up becoming a big joke all over the cool freaks family of groups, all in good fun of course, no one was making fun of the person, just the bizarre situation and the fact that it's "Worst Name" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF46WBynezU on september 28 every year the thread blows up again as we all wish each other a happy speelbog day anyway i'm sure i've got more of these, but more than that i'm sure YOU'VE got more of these |

lol I knew this day would come. anyway I guess it’s time to come out with it I was heavily involved with CFWC for some time from 2014-2016 and created some of the groups, namely…coolfreaks.jpg. I left in April of 2016 so barely missed mr.Spielbergo was it? I am GENUINELY shocked it’s still going. I’m barely on FB, if ever, but I’m still friends with some users, online and irl, to this day.

i posted on and/or read soul strut for as long as it's been around (1999, like here) and still do, though it's pretty quiet now. it's crate digging/record nerd/hip hop culture/the old music that hip hop sampled/DJing. amazing stuff happened there - the discovery of mingering mike happened live on the board (he's an outsider artist who spent years hand painting mock LP covers of imaginary soul bands often featuring himself, down to cutting and painting cardboard discs to represent the records, his collection was found after his storage unit was auctioned off and a poster or two tracked him down and brought his art into the public eye and eventually a book and the smithsonian https://americanart.si.edu/artist/mingering-mike-30363. and very cool and interesting if not hugely famous musicians posted there - cut chemist from jurassic 5, diplo before he got famous, thes one from people under the stairs, monty stark from stark reality, and a million DJs, some of whom are amazing and talented and have worldwide reputations (kon and amir, voodoo funk aka frank gossner, man, i can't even go on i don't know where to start... oh and RIP Matthew Africa). oliver wang and various accomplished music writers and bloggers as well. the legendary biz markie boast of having a copy of bob james take me to the mardi gras drum break with the agogo bells missing from the mix was investigated and confirmed by thes one (or maybe he had it made?) on a reel to reel discovered from a tv company. basically it was like having a window into a secret clubhouse of all the most knowledgeable people on earth about all the genres of music i was into, some of whom actuallly made the music i was into. and all with its own dumb slang and drama and superstar posters - now respected modern artist anthony pearson was an insanely funny foul mouthed poster there poo poo talking tyrone washington records etc by talking about braiding one's asscrack or whatever, and a heavyweight record dealer with serious knowledge to drop in his own anally fixated language. a spin-off that was less funk and rap oriented and more just weird records, waxidermy, also still exists and a few people migrated there back in the day. i'm glad for forums as a specialist interest form of social media still, and i'm happy both of those have survived in active form as an archive of insanely deep knowledge of obscure music and its lore. someone could write an amazing book/oral history of these places and the stuff that came out of them, but i was too passive a participant (basically not enough of a record balleur to have a big collection/decades of knowledge to floss) to be that person. forums for life Deep Glove Bruno fucked around with this message at 02:41 on Jan 7, 2022 |

I used to visit a forum that was ostensibly about computers called Burning PC daily. The place only ever got about a dozen users, and we were a tight-knit group that also had an IRC channel. The forum got shut down and people migrated off the channel, myself included. There's very little sign of it ever having existed online, but once, it was a group of friends. Sometimes I wonder what happened to those people... |

in late high school/early college, i played thousands of hours of a MUD called crimson 2. I only found out about it because of someone I met IRL who was an admin on it, but it was a tiny little DikuMUD base that had been going since the early 90s but had never had more than ~100 active players or so, and it was less than that by the time I was playing. i don't know if i ever saw more than 20 players on at a time. it was basically no roleplay, opt-in PVP, hack&slash kind of thing. most of the player-created content was designed around the "end-game" experience. if you reached the max level (41(why?)) you became an "avatar" which meant you could learn skills/spells from any class, buy stats with XP, etc. so outside of some base stats, the only limit to the power of your character was the items you got and the amount of time you spent farming xp to improve stats it took me like a year to get my character fully kitted out, and then i went for a second character so i could hit -600 AC (lower AC was better in this game but there was no difference between -501 and -599, so you needed a lot of gear to get there). something like 11 pieces of equipment per character, plus a set of like 8 or 10 weapons because different weapons were better for different types of enemies it still exists but htey wipe inactive characters, so all my work is gone occasionally i'll log in and see if anyone i remember from 20 years ago is on, but typically there's no one

I went on random aim chatrooms as a kid and did a lot of role play. I was a kid though so not the fun kind, I pretended to be my oc and went on pg-rated high fantasy adventures with other posters. my oc, "kento," was a monk caught between reality and the ethereal plane and had a bunch of non-specific plot-convenient powers I also religiously followed a column on the aol newsletter or portal or whatever where the two authors would present statements or urban legends as fact and ask the reader to determine if the statements were "truth or crap," which was the title of the piece. I've never been able to find any record of it's existence on the modern web |

i was deeply into the Mac warez community as a teen, starting with aol chatrooms and script kiddie tools and moving on to this program called Hotline that was glorified FTP or maybe soulseek? you'd connect to a tracker and you could browse the files (or "philez") people were sharing from there I found out about phone phreaking and I really wanted to get into that but all of the techniques had stopped working in urban areas by the time I was 5 pretty much so I spent a lot of time making circuit boards that made beeps that handn't meant anything for a decade

I was on a Beach Boys mailing list in 1997. it was fully of weird drama. there was a lady who hinted that she had hosed Dennis Wilson and demanded respect because she was 'close to the band', a guy selling hugely overpriced bootlegs who would post long angry rants about his liner notes anytime said that $35 is a little steep for a third generation tape off a SMiLE bootleg LP. also a dumbposting guy who claimed to be a teenager but probably was just a weirdo troll. there's no trace of any of it left on the web now. it was the blurst of time and majordomo mailinglists went away and nobody missed them.

i found a really long post on Compuserve back in the day (i think it was Compuserve??) written by a guy who stole turds from public toilets. he had various rigs that he designed that would intercept turds without blocking the toilet, and without being visible from above the waterline. he'd lie in wait for a HOT GUY to take a shid, then rush in and grab the loot. he'd take it home and freeze it, then play with it. iirc he'd put condoms on the frozen poops and shove them up his butt. thanks for coming to my ted talk

all of my late 90s/very early 00s internet friends got arrested one day in the first? international police takedown of a botnet. I used to hang out w/ them in their irc network of rooted servers, doing shady things and it's probably just dumb luck that I wasn't arrested myself. I can't find any news coverage but there is this book about it: https://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=348249&seqNum=6 I found the PDF several years ago and there are photos and chatlogs in that book that I remember and was probably edited out of for the book. lol all of the americans ended up going free w/out charges iirc because there were no applicable computer laws under which they could be charged as minors but a couple guys in the UK were adults and did a few years in prison. |
