One thing this kind of covered but didn't really focus on was how much goons seemed to rag on lowtax a lot, even in the good times. Like with the mangosteen, I didn't think it was a big deal that he talked about it and had some referral links, but he did get ripped apart for it. I seem to remember him posting that one of the reasons he didn't upgrade vbulletin sooner was because he knew it would change the look of the forums and people would complain. Goons complained about the change to the front page's layout when that happened. There was the whole SASS board that hounded him for years. And he would have absolutely been eviscerated by this community if he had ever sold out the site to a corporation when it was at its peak.

I don't know if it's the situation where his mind chose to focus on the negative voices most and then felt like that's all that there was. Maybe he had a mental issue of always framing himself as a victim even when there wasn't much of a problem or if it was actually his fault. But it does make me think about how the toxic element of these boards really did get under his skin and he wasn't able to ignore it like some public figures can.

95% of goons were always sucking him off, probably myself included, long past when he deserved it in any way. he 100% had a massive victim complex right up to the millisecond he pulled the trigger

Honestly, if he had sold the site in its prime, it would have probably been for the best. Short of slenderman, this site hasn't really produced much of note except for drama in the last 12+ years and Lowtax didn't really have a strong engagement with the forums or his audience. (EPG's content was lightyears better than Lowtax's anyway) If sold, Somethingawful would have been rolled into any number of other sites and forgotten, then we would all end up on Reddit anyway and likely fewer people would have been hurt in the interim.

Eh, not necessarily true. I came back here after a long hiatus of lurking specifically because it wasn't Reddit or Twitter -- I'd be able to find quality discussion about relatively niche interests that wouldn't be flooded with crap and toxicity. It's a blessing that the remaining userbase has matured, even if Lowtax never did. And it's a good thing that crypto bros and MAGA freaks, to name two particular constituencies, get laughed out of here. I can log onto almost any other discussion website and get all of that poo poo I can handle, and then some.

Purging the 4chan oriented chuds over the years has certainly helped.

The fact that we went from adolescent smilies like :sonia: to goon-cringe smilies like :chloe: says a lot about the moral compass here.

Haven't watched the doc yet, but IMO you're right. Lowtax was vocally annoyed that the forums were the successful part of SA, even after he'd stepped away from the day to day stuff.

Then he had to talk to the loving Secret Service because some proto-channers (wait, when did LF get shut down?) IIRC were trying to crowdsource assassinating a president.

As an insane-long-time-lurker, IMO if there were truly an BC/AD moment with SA, especially w/r/t the forums, it was when LF was shut down.

I feel like the creation of Hell Dump was at least as big a moment. Aside from the doxing and all that poo poo that went on, it really marked a turn from a certain strain of nerkbeardyness that had been really common. That's when "goon" really started to become a term of derision.

That's sort of the problem-- he had too much of an ego and hadn't been self deprecating for a long time. He'd say semi-sarcastic things like "my wife is dragging my fat rear end to some expensive vacation lol woe is me," but if he got truly offended by something or got triggered by something he didn't like about himself he would flip the gently caress out.

It is. The guy in the doc keeps calling it by its letters "Eff Wye Ayy Dee." But he also keeps saying "Shmorky" and "Kyanka" wrong based on what LadyAmbien said and how I've always heard Fragmaster say it.
