A huge Tolkien nerd and won't even give them a chance. Just straight up says he saw enough of the pre-production press to know he won't like it which seems... dog whistle-y.

I mean I feel the same way and it's because of what I know about what they're allowed to write about and who is doing the actual writing (untested writers/producers under Amazon execs thumbs).

Like let's not make any criticism or lack of enthusiasm of the project be a dog whistle.

It's based off of the appendices of LotR and they can't use anything from the The Silmarillion.

To be more specific and pedantic it's the lotr and the hobbit film rights are owned by Middle Earth Enterprises who bought it off the Tolkein estate in the 70s then licensed it to New Line. A weird video game company named Embracer is about to buy Middle Earth Enterprises.

Warner Brothers, which owns New Line, contends they still are honoring the contractual requirements to own this license. That's why there's a lotr anime supposed to come out in 2024.

This doesn't include the television rights. So Amazon bought the TV rights to the lotr and hobbit books only. The actual in depth histories of the second age were not part of this purchase. So we got the bare minimum ages and dates mentioned in the appendices and a few songs sprinkled in the books as the foundation of this show, run by people that don't have a history writing fantasy.

Gonna hold off until the season finale personally and there's good reviews of it.

Like with most Showtime shows that end up being good, Nurse Jackie was only good for a couple of seasons before turning south. Merritt Weaver was amazing in it though, and deserved that Emmy win. The show also featured a young Arjun Gupta who went on to star on the wonderful The Magicians, which is still streaming on Netflix for anyone who hasn't seen it yet and needs a reminder.

Just keep in mind, the show starts rough as it was only loosely adapting the books, and struggled to find its voice and tone. It all started to come together in season 2, and season 3 was one of the most wonderful and enjoyable seasons in television. It's thoroughly camp, and once they realized that, that's when things started to get good.

This isn't really on topic but this conco reminds me....I saw Zach and Miri make a Porn which was directed by Kevin Smith and starred Seth Rogen at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Q&A didn't have Seth Rogen but it had everyone else and I remember Kevin Smith talking to a giant auditorium full of hundreds of people about how Jason Mewes obviously had to masterbate a little to get his dick bigger on film, because he had seen it so many times, while an obviously uncomfortable Mewes squirmed next to him.

Finished Cyberpunk Edgerunners last night. Show was pretty wild. I was never a fan of Studio Trigger's anime art style, but it suits Cyberpunk 2077's visual language really, really well. Story and characters are cool; reminded me a bit of Blomkamp's District 9 at times with its fair bit of cyberaugmenting body horror stuff, hyper violence, and one of the plot threads is pretty similar. If you're averse to anime you probably won't like it since it leans heavy into a bunch of anime tropes, but if you're a fan of animation in general and other cyberpunk works like like Ghost in the Shell or Blade Runner, I'd say the show is absolutely worth a watch.

I think the show wasn't as imaginative as it could be and was def stuck in a retro take on futurism, down to the 80s like exploitation of female nudity, but I thought the short number of eps and how decisively it dealt with its various characters, aping a noir like mindset, was pretty cool, esp for anime.

Ok, I see how people would like how retro it was. Fair enough. Can I say how bad the dialogue was? I had to watch it in Japanese because at least it was a little bit more bearable as another language lol.

There is great examples of english dubs out there. Feels like the translators were too locked in to replicating the japanese dialogue, which really only works in that language (tho it isn't that spectacular there either).

Trite. Explicitly stating their thoughts. Obvious attempts at cool lines that fall flat. Just a general dearth of anything approaching humor or interesting lines.
