What are some good independent radio stations to listen to?

Ones with online streaming would be best, but not essential.

Here locally its RTRFM.
https://rtrfm.com.au/

The big one over east would be 3RRR in Melbourne.

Humboldt counties independent radio station.
Good music and good/funny talk shows. They also interrupt programs with live updates on helicopters/police convoys as a psa sometimes.

I like radio paradise. Fairly eclectic mix and has the option to play something different.

In New Orleans everyone listens to WWOZ. If you're into that kind of music (jazz, zydeco, etc.) or want to pretend you're carrying a parasol and drinking from a flask while in a second line through Treme.

in the bay area i used to listen to three eclectic and interesting college stations - KALX, KZSU, and KFJC - and an independent Berkeley station KPFA, "free speech radio". all those are good.

WFMU is a favorite of east coasters i know.

most of these are on radio garden app or have their own apps.

I was a DJ at KALX for a few years. Solid enough station but nothing really outside of a regular college station, I guess. They did get considerably good interviews, concert sponsors, community stuff compared to other stations I've been with.

I was too! Well, I did 3-6am training shifts. Never had a regular slot.

I liked the Sunday morning hip hop show with DJ Pone and Billy Jam from Hip Hop Slam records, and the overall mix on KALX was a higher "keep listening" rate than KZSU, where I also briefly worked, and KFJC. Like, more consistent.

But KZSU had The Drum and Japanic and Club Manic-Consciousness and various other great shows. They have really good live artists too.

KFJC was the weirdest, they'd do stuff like 24 hours of Sun Ra or 24 hours of noise... when you found something cool on it it was insanely cool, if you know what I mean. Higher highs and lower lows of like "I'm switching this RIGHT the gently caress off".

For example, KFJC had "Skulltime for Kids", with two guys doing pirate voices hosting a show where they played old storytelling records and stuff, which I loved back in the day.

KEXP is good, but they've kinda gotten a little too into latino hip-hop and electronica for my tastes

can be hit or miss... they have MANY deejays who are ANNOYING and have terrible voices.... "hiiiiiiiiii this is kar-uhnnnnnnnnnnn with wax lyricaaaaaaaaaal" oh my ears or the guy who plays the 1930s music who has an incrediby obvious fake british accent

but they also have GREAT deejays especially late at night

check out DJ SHE BEATS she plays awesome stuff and she also says like helpful spiritual stuff... i think her show is on friday or saturday

they're out of Spindale, NC, kind of near Asheville. singer-songwriter stuff, jazz, and (most of all) old-time music of various kinds. they still have actual DJs and they're all massive music nerds.

they used to do a 4:20 (AM) jam of the day before the last stragglers found out what that refers to. they still do a "new tunes at 2" (PM) thing every weekday that focuses on a new album. couple of NPR/PRI news and music shows, a bunch of genre music shows, generally good stuff.

out of Louisville. I'm not as familiar with it, but it's largely similar to the above description, but with old-school and underground rap.

I'll throw one in for Soma FM https://somafm.com/

It's really well curated with lots of genre options. I've thrown these guys some cash over the years.

No ads, just the occasional "money please if you liked this and can spare it."

Also weirder but it's fun to get high and play with shortwave radio when the conditions are right. You can hear everything from like weather buoys transmitting data to insane preachers yelling about the lake of fire. There is also the BBC World Service which is really cool.

worth noting what Over The Edge is, exactly - it's a live-mixed soundscape collage where you can often just call in and go directly to air in the mix, no screening. it's like collaborative documentary sometimes, other times it's like a bunch of sound collage artists trying to out-esoteric each other live. it's really the most incredible concept and execution for a radio show I've ever come across and the fact that it's been going for so long is mind boggling.

i used to call into OTE and play downloaded samples off my computer and poo poo. i remember i recorded myself groaning on a minicassette and played it back at half speed, randomly high speed squeal-rewinding it, for AGES and they just incorporated it into the background mix. i wish i knew which episodes they were. I recorded some off the air bits where me and my dumbshit buddies got on but many more i didn't bother.

i recommend anybody to listen to over the edge, but especially as it was intended: between the hours of midnight and 5am alone on headphones.
