you know how sometimes a poster here takes the time to break down a complex topic into less complex? if someone knew lots about image and video encoding and could chat for hours about the processes using ELI5 language man i’d read it

yeah, compression is kind of cool but almost no one is interested enough in all sides of it to not find a complete treatment really tedious. e.g. you are unlikely to both enjoy nitty-gritty bit-saving and error-correcting encoding *and* the jungle of color space details and ill motivated but complex psychovisual models.
