Wild that people live like this. I guess it is just the deep seated protestant mentality of apathy that prevents them from overthrowing their system. So sad.

This is a fascinating look into the Anglo mentality. Due to religious beliefs in predetermination, dating to pre-modern times, many Anglos, in most Anglo states, simply view whatever the powerful authority does as good and godgiven. It is definitly a necessary cultural component to understand their seemingly irrational beliefs.

Shelling is fairly normal occurrence in Donbass sadly. Both sides randomily take pot shots at each other with mortars and sometimes 120mm guns. The fact that this is now the headline story on RIA is perhaps telling though.

Out of curiosity, who would veto Ukraine joining NATO? I feel like the US would jump at the chance to flip Putin the middle finger. Germany and France for starters.

Yes. Several members would veto. Zelensky knows this. So does Putin. Yet NATO membership is literally in the Ukrainian constitution. Zelensky has literally asked NATO just to be honest with him, and say what they all know to be true.

putin does speaks about the soviet era in a sentimental way sometimes (eg the famous 'anyone who doesn't miss the soviet union has no heart, anyone who wants it back has no brain'), but nothing really about his decisions or the power structures or economic decisions he's involved with suggest any favorable sentiment towards communism. Very much the opposite, if anything.

I'd say many Russians of his generation who weren't actively dissidents have a similar attitude to the USSR.
