It's important to note that despite posturing, Russia is not a very religious country. Church attendance is roughly on the same level as in Czechia, the most atheist European country. Homophobia in modern Russia is rooted more in the Soviet era anti-bourgeoisie rhetoric and prison culture than in religious fundamentalism. The religious component is more visible because religious groups are more organised than apolitical and barely religious general population. Additionally, Russian government tries to establish the Russian Orthodox Church as kind of an equivalent of modern Church of England or Danish National Church, a primarily cultural institution, where actual religious adherence is not necessarily the top priority.

Belarusian opposition plan to hold a huge anti-war protest literally in 5 minutes. Smaller protests today next to referendum polling stations (usually schools) were quickly dispersed, activists report ~60 arrested protesters in Minsk so far.

500-800 protesters arrested in Minsk alone. It's probably the biggest protest in Belarus since August 2020. There is also a considerable uptick in subscribers to opposition and independent news channels in telegram and elsewhere. Just like I didn't expect Putin to wage a full-scale war on Ukraine, I definitely didn't expect the referendum to inspire another wave of protests.

punk rebel ecks posted:Thanks. There is basically no independent sociology in Belarus. It's literally illegal to poll on any political questions without a special governmental certification, and guess what, only extremely pro-Lukashenko polling agencies pass that criteria. What data could be gathered illegally is not very precise. Chatham House, for example, only had access to people over Viber and only to those who live in cities. But the few polls that are out there indicated Lukashenko's support at 20-35% back in 2021 (compared to Tsikhanouskaya's 55-65%). If that number increased lately (huge if), it's only because thousands of Lukashenko's opponents have left the country.

Belarus is understandably not the hottest news topic right now, but the Investigative Committee of Belarus just published a pretty sobering piece of data. Apparently 'only 5-6%' of all criminal offences in Belarus are on extremism charges. https://www.belta.by/society/view/sk-dela-ob-ekstremizme-sostavljajut-ne-bolee-5-6-ot-obschego-chisla-prestuplenij-496830-2022/ That doesn't take into account non-criminal offences such as forwarding someone a weather report from one of now hundreds of telegram channels that are considered extremist, or criminal offences of non-extremist nature, such as offending the president or a government official by sending them a poop emoji on twitter.

Some novel economic regulations will being tested in Belarus. On today's cabinet meeting, Lukashenko was extremely angry, shouted at ministers, and blamed them for high inflation rates and rising cost of living. 'Right off the field, I have to go and ask for gas and oil, and for loans, and then also run to the shops and control the prices? So what the bloody hell do I need you lot for then?!' As a solution, Lukashenko ordered to prohibit all price hikes, on all products and services. Even his PM Roman Golovchenko tried to cool things off a bit. 'You can have every aspect regulated and overregulated to a T and still get the opposite effect. [...] In Belarus, price regulation is already the toughest in the CIS and one of the toughest in the world.' Lukashenko didn't want to listen. 'Roman Alexandrovich, let me remind you. You are the Prime Minister of Belarus, not Estonia. Fortunately. And not Latvia or Lithuania. Why should we pay any attention to them?' As a result, now it's illegal to raise prices without a special approval from the government full stop. Not even if you had something on sale and want to go back to the original price. The Committee of State Control already promise criminal charges for the offenders.

Paladinus posted:As a solution, Lukashenko ordered to prohibit all price hikes, on all products and services. A little follow-up on this. After arresting about a dozen of store owners for the crime of raising prices, the decision was deemed to have always been temporary, and a new law is now in place. It limits price hikes only on specific* goods, mostly food, for all manufacturers, distributors, and local stores. Compared to the original blanket ban, restaurants, for example, can now raise prices freely, apart from the cases where they ship their food to stores. The rest will have to approve prices with local governmental committees. The last two weeks were extremely chaotic, some imported goods had to be pulled off the shelves to avoid large losses, and now at least they seem to be back in all their unregulated glory. The law is still not very realistic and supply issues with imported goods, especially fruits and veg, whose price is seasonal, are unavoidable, unless they change things up again after another dozen of criminal cases. *The list is actually fairly vague, and not even officials can answer some very basic questions. At the press conference with business representatives, someone asked if a salad grown from different seeds can be considered a new product with its own price or has to be sold at the same price as a salad that's already in store, and the official just waffled for two minutes about how all salads are essentially the same in response, and suggested to send the question in later in writing. There is also little clarity on how the price should be set when two shipments of the same item can have different prices. Officials say they should be sold at the lowest price, but there is nothing in the law to stipulate this.

Paladinus posted:Meanwhile Russia continues its spiritual war against decadent Western values through legislating. The new law that aims to extend ban on LGBTQ+ propaganda to all people, not just children, now also touches on the cesspit that is gaming. The following games are proposed to be banned in Russia: A follow-up on this. The legislative package has passed second reading, but the amendment on video games has been inexplicably axed. It will 'only' regulate the internet, mass media, books, audio and video content, movies, and advertising. Regular citizens can now be fined for up to ~$5k for LGBT propaganda, and ~$3k for propaganda of 'sex change' aimed at minors. It also not-so-subtly includes fines for propaganda of paedophilia (up to ~$10k). Tomorrow is its third reading, and it will probably pass, considering 390 Duma members, including all faction leaders, worked on it in some capacity. E: Yep, passed.
