Takopi's Original Sin (Official English) is currently running in Shounen Jump+ and as of today also runs in Manga Plus for English readers. It's a manga about the octopus-looking Takopi, an alien from a planet where everyone is happy and technology is indistinguishable from magic:  Along its journey Takopi meets a troubled young girl named Shizuka on Earth in the year 2016. Seeking to bring her happiness, Takopi follows her to home and school to uncover the source of her somber expressions.   The story that unveils is an exploration of human darkness that shakes the utopia-bred Takopi. But our protagonist refuses to give up.  Can Takopi find happiness for children who bear the full weight of society's troubles? ----- Anyway this manga is really good. Thought I'd make a thread for people to post their impressions as new chapters come out in English. I've been following it through the Japanese releases and the mangaka Taizan 5(a rookie talent afaik) is very good at turning the blacks and whites of manga into light and darkness within the pages and the characters.

I think it went a little too hard to be misery porn. The first chapters were to have us understand the main character's gratitude at the bully's undoing and how meaningful it was to the octopus. No idea where it goes from here ofc. I'm guessing the cover-up is going to escalate due to the manga's title.

I think the first few chapters are setup for the actual start of the story, which will probably be takopi basically having to live as a miserable human child and experience suffering firsthand, to see if he can still believe in goodness afterwards. I agree that if it were to just repeat the same plot beats and tone even more, it might not amount to anything. But it looks like it is priming itself to dive into things now.

if this is meant to be emulating punpun then it's a poor successor. it goes too far into dirge too fast and the title character's tonal dissonance with the rest of events is a one-note joke that loses its effectiveness halfway through the second chapter also the art kind of sucks but there aren't many manga that measure up to asano's stuff on that front
