And here I was thinking it might get better in 2024.

I guess this is going to either prolong the issues we have currently or force us to do things better.

Plan on extended shortages at this point.

It’s weird that high tech chip manufacturing is so concentrated given how critically important it is economically and militarily and while I don’t know poo poo about economics it seems like that’d be a great thing to subsidize in all the hollowed out de-industrialized areas.

I've been thinking the same.

There are a number of semiconductor supply chain plants going in near me, I wonder if that will alter the deal any. We were expecting a few thousand jobs here.

Hasn't semiconductor production already shifted significantly to diode lasers like UV that don't rely on exciting noble gases quite a while ago?

I recall a tech nerd at work mentioning something of the sort to me early 2021, specifically because of a) their potential to etch/sterilize even more advanced wafers than their gas-reliant cousins, and b) the fact that they are considerably cheaper regarding their own operating costs?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the war in Ukraine isn't going to drive up prices for chips, because it's going to disrupt pretty much everything, but I'm gonna need some confirmation on neon shortages actually moving the needle considerably in semiconductor production.

Because it barely moved the needle compared to demand shortages related to crypto mining, and I can't imagine it would even register compared to the massive disruption in the supply chain COVID caused.

Right now, to be quite honest, I couldn't really give the remotest gently caress about cost of GPUs, because the cost of everything is going to go up, and even that is just completely eclipsed by the loss of human life and warcriming going on

Just not great when you consider the non-renewable energy Russia owns and that Ukraine controls more precious resources.

Also I'm always trying to fight anti-vax and antisemitism in the Epstein thread and had a kinda wild thought:

Pretty sure they are referring to a particular sequence in the genome of SARS-CoV-2 'CTCCTCGGCGGGCACGTAG', which is the complement of a sequence Moderna patented in 2016 (ie before covid) called 'MSH3'. Apparently the probability of these sequences randomly matching in nature is 3.21 x 10^-11

E: I appreciate the bearded optimism video, but I did actually see the news of that sale the other day, and immediately thought "what about hurricanes?"

But that's a lot of money for no solid ground. And would probably be a good spot to set up a wave farm too. Until hurricanes, I guess.

For the most part it was toilet humor memes. Occasionally it Denver into darker things, nothing that would make our darker posts seem tame or out of line though.

I suspect they had a bunch of spicier content that got removed by the automods. Coincidentally, the hard core trumpers I know of on Facebook have been complaining about the Facebook automods tagging old posts of theirs as violating community standards or being false info. It could be that they changed the automod settings which triggered the removal.

On this note, DoD just dropped mask requirements on all bases that are in "Low" or "Medium" counties as categorized by the CDC.

Last time they tried this it was just the local base CO rolling it back and that lasted for all of about 12 hours before getting reinstated, so hopefully coming from the SecDef it has a little more staying power this time. We had a big Omicron spike in January but now we're back to basically no active cases and our three remaining antivaxxers are in the process of getting adsepped.

It dropped back down in our area but the average cases are still 10x higher than the last time they said we could drop masks back in May/June 2021...call me overly cautious but I think I'll leave mine on for a bit longer.

seems like a bit of a hurry to de-mask with the new omicron variant coming out(just as contagious and able to evade resistance, but now as deadly as beta!)
