According to the book's pronunciation guide, the double o with the curved line on top represents /ʊ/, which is the vowel sound in the modern pronunciation of bushel.

Those two always gave me pause as a second language speaker because I kept hearing both and could never be sure which way I should be saying it. Good to know it goes back a long time.

frankly i do not accept these 'or' pronunciations. how might two varying dialects both be proclaimed correct. if two manners of speaking might both be said to be acceptable than what about three? four? even five?

Weird how the author acknowledges the Roman pronunciation of Caesar but not that of Zeus, even explicitly calling it out as incorrect. Conversely, I was hoping he'd draw a hard line on epoch. What was New Vegas right about?

Thanks. I noticed 'sict' on uk tv a number of times. As a non-native speaker I was wondering what the deal was, maybe some class shibboleth or something, but couldn't be bothered to google it. Turns out bbc says it can happen in casual speech, but it's considered incorrect. I'm not sure that really answers it, but ok. Is it regional?
