Having grown up during the Cold War, the initial fight against pollution, the Reagan era, AIDS... I'm accustomed to feeling helpless. I'm accustomed to watching the system fail the vast majority of us. Accustomed to the endless vile propaganda, the glee of the worst people as they see suffering, pain and death spread across the land.

I didn't think that things would get this bad again in my lifetime. It seems that every big problem, every fight is all happening at once, again, and the system rolls along, crushing most of us under the wheels.

We gnaw upon one another because we are the only ones who will listen. The only ones who care.

I remember back in the Eighties in college I had a Speech class. For the final we each had to give a 10 minute speech on any topic, and one woman began hers by standing up placards with photos of aborted fetuses. I left, so I guess I'll never know what her speech was about.

I filled out my ballot yesterday, and I felt that part of my responsibility was to avoid voting for politicians who worship police, whether through needless budget increases, performing the usual groveling in front of a stage full of cops, or Klobuchar's "OUR TROOPS" kind of nonsense.

It was disappointing to see how many candidates sprinkled this police garbage onto otherwise progressive platforms. I probably threw most of my votes away because I could not bring myself to choose whatever rich white man had spent the most money, or the Democratic incumbent coasting along doing nothing to push back against the GOP horrors.
