Well, after a quick look around, there's just over half a dozen series I'm going to try out.

Onipan! - Demons using magical undies. Studio Wit has done some amazing things, but boy does this one look like it's going to be a trainwreck. Just so long as it's an entertaining one.

Paripi Koumei - speaking of potential trainwrecks, this one is either going to crash and burn spectacularly, or actually be reasonably decent. That the English title is "YA BOY, KONGMING!" doth not give the highest expectations.

RPG Fudousan - I suspect I'm one of like... five people who unironically enjoyed "Dragon's House Hunting" (Letty remains a precious cinnamon roll), so this time doing the same thing only with a group RPG cast might be equally as much fun.

Deaimon - Slice-of-life food porn. My fat rear end can't get enough of it.

Estab-Life: Great Escape - The set-up reads like the opening to a Paranoia game. I enjoy well-run Paranoia games so I'm curious to see how this one plays out.

Shachiku-san wa Youjo Yuurei ni Iyasaretai - Little ghost girls helping out a salarywoman. I'll probably need insulin after every episode, but what the hell, I survived "Snow Fairy Sugar."

SPY X FAMILY - Who isn't going to at least try this one out? Wit and Cloverworks? May as well tell me Queen & David Bowie cut a song together. Yes, I know. Shaddap. Haven't been this excited for a spy show since the original "Get Smart."

Add in the second half of "Kodama Kawashiri" and the "OddTaxi" movie and I'll have a full plate this season.

The manga is amazing and well-worth the read, so I'm counting on it being good. May require you to have a bit of a soft spot for the Three Kingdoms stuff though since that's a big part of the gimmick.

I loved Dragon's House Hunting, but when I checked out what little of the manga was available for this I was just not impressed. Maybe it gets better later, but the chapters that had been scanlated only contained very typical gags that didn't really make me crave more. I don't think it will be awful, but I'm not expecting it to really rise above being just ok.

YA BOY KONGMING is actually a pretty decent translation of the vibe that the title Paripi Koumei gives in Japanese.

Ill give Skeleton Knight a chance even though Im very burned out on isekai, otherwise nothing catches my eye. Probably wait to see which shows surprise the thread and check some of them out down the road.

No punchman or grown up comedies this season is the real kicker.

All I know about it is the trailer and it looked like he was just helping out teenage musicians. If there is way more to it than that then Im willing to give it a shot.

it's weird that there are like a handful of popular web novel platforms that get loads of assorted cross media deals in Japan while the broader entertainment industry in the US seems to care more about licensing and adapting internet-grade celebrities playing D&D instead of online prose, right?

Other than 50 Shades of Grey, which kind of piggybacked off of a bigger thing in the first place

It happens every now and then. Easily the biggest example I can think of would be The Martian, which was originally serialized online.

Did you miss the wave of YA novel adaptations that happened starting from Harry Potter up to after the last Hunger Games movie?

If I remember right, one of the big things was a major Japanese site switching from primarily being fanfic to being serial-numbers-removed fic. It meant a wider pool of web original fiction, which meant much more potential material. Add in increasing demand for something, anything to make into an anime, and we get the current situation.

Just let yourself become a worthless person!
Now I’m curious how the absolute popularity of English web serials compares to Japanese ones. For reference, popular series like Azarinth Healer has 50 million total views, averaging 50 thousand per day, and has 20,000 followers. Is this much less than a popular Japanese web serial? I kind of always assumed it would be, but I don’t really know.

Some English web serials have cleaned-up versions published as e-books, but it seems very different from the light novel industry; they’re small efforts led by the author themselves. I have to think that’s the big difference. Instead, authors tend to make money with Patreons, though I’m not sure how much they really get.

I know of a few English web novels that just monetize directly with patreon rather than doing the publishing route. I don’t know if this is especially common, but I’ve not heard of Japanese authors doing that. But then again not being able to speak the language it’d be pretty easy for me to not be aware of it.

Back in a previous era (I want to say when zorak was mod) I really liked running down the anime list and checking out all the sirens to quickly know which series were worth looking into and had people talking about them, whether or not they had a dedicated thread. It was a good overview of the season with all the garbage chaff cut out. At some point I stopped doing that because only a few shows would get the sirens and they tended to be shows I was already well aware of.

If more than 3 people here think a show is notable or worth checking out it should get a siren imo. Shows that need a special highlight should be given the :frogsiren: instead

the problem is there are so many shows now and people's tastes have diverged so much that it's hard to know what's actually going to be popular on here besides big shonens and sequels. like "The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody" looks like a show generated by an algorithm to me, the definition of 'garbage chaff', but i guarantee in a few weeks theres going to be like 5 people in here discussing how its pretty enjoyable despite the MC doing slavery or whatever.

on the flipside, something like Machikado Mazoku would probably also be shrugged off as 'garbage chaff' back in that era and is now a board favorite.
