When do you guys listen to podcasts? I only do it when I'm driving but most of my trips are 5-10 minutes so I don't bother. If I'm taking an hour drive somewhere then yeah. I tried listening to them and audiobooks while jogging but I'm too focused on how much I hate life so it's hard to pay attention.

When cooking or trying to fall asleep. I tried it in the car but I end up paying more attention to the road and don't retain anything.

Yeah I'm a pretty vigilant driver and it can be hard to pay attention to it.

Conan needs a friend makes me mad because it's always almost good. He never really gets anywhere deep with any of his guests, and they always dodge any interesting questions. I know that's how he gets his big name guests, but listening to the Obama and Sotomayor podcasts were such let downs.

The pandemic made a ton of podcasts I used to listen to suck, so I'm not going to list the 20 or so that were great but then fell into the repetitive gimmick crap that befalls most podcasts

That is the point of Conan. He isn't the deep guy, he's the guy who used to have a masturbating bear on his TV show. He's not trying to break any stories, he just likes to talk to people

I spent a few New Years with Conan when I was in my teens. He did the central time one since the other late shows got the eastern time.

I have a special place in my heart for him.

I also liked the gaseous wiener. He was announcing new (failed) mascots like the masturbating bear, which was one that stuck. It was a giant hot dog that farted.

There was a great bit with Max having sex with himself. Max was lying on top of Max and staring in his eyes and humping him. I cannot believe anyone signed off on that. It was great.

Holy poo poo I haven't seen this in like 20 years. That's amazing. Thank you so much.

edit: Max was one of my favorite things on Conan. They always made him do the mean or just most terrible poo poo. I loved the character they made out of him.

When I'm going to bed I either turn on rain sounds or sleep meditations from Insight Timer. Yoga Nidra is pretty good. It's basically a body scan.

Ambien also helps.

Bedtime is usually a strong edible and an archaeology podcast. So long as Ken Feder isn't railing against pseudoachaeology or how the History Channel is ruining science (which, I mean, he's both hilarious and correct on all points - he's just not a relaxing personality), I can easily drift off.

I listen while running but I'm out running for at least an hour 7 days a week so it's a good 10+ hours a week that I've got in which I can pretend to have friends and be social.

As for stuff to listen to that I haven't seen mentioned yet
  • Common Descent - couple of paleo archeologists talk about old rocks and poo poo
  • The Wild Episode - dude who finds some jank rear end animals to talk about for a while
  • Radio War Nerd - War nerds talking about wars on the radio
  • The live stream of your mothers bedroom

Bedtime for me is the only time I read (it helps me fall asleep most of the time, so I don't do it during the day) or watching calming youtube videos like the Townsends (fun 18th century history buff) or camping/hiking/backpacking vids, etc. Nothing too exciting.

Although I just finished Das Boot and holy poo poo. That was one of the best books I've ever read. I ended up reading it for about 2 hours a night so that didn't help me get to sleep. Now I'm finally reading If It Bleeds from Stephen King. His newest book of short stories I think. I always liked his short stories.

I tried listening to audiobooks when going to sleep but I'd just pass out and miss a bunch of it. They have timers I can set so it's only 30 minutes or so but I still don't hear it all so I just can't do that.

Dementropy

The other thing I will do is queue up one of my playlists of bad documentaries from the 1970s. Everything from In Search Of... to Nova. Since they tread over old ground or are irrelevant due to the information we now have available to us, I don't miss anything. Besides, I find Nimoy, Serling, and the other narrators' voices conducive to sleeping.

Anyway, sorry for the anti-insomnia derail. Back to podcast chat.
