GUNDAM EVOLUTION: Newtypes Never Die!

edit: First problem is UX design! If you're going to lock the user into a UI state where you must be able to connect to the servers to access the UI (because a full screen "can't connect" dialogue keeps popping up) there needs to be an "Exit Game" button alongside the "Retry" button. Alternatively, don't use that style of check/let players access the title screen before testing network connectivity!

I love the classic mecha dashes that you can do. Spend your thruster fuel to "sprint" or to dash.

RX-78's napalm grenade ult is nuts but uhhh I don't recall that being part of it's arsenal in the anime? (or any variant of 78 for that matter)

Turn A's grapple throw is pretty funny though a little janky to catch.

Guntank is strange to evaluate. Not exactly strong yet is plenty annoying to the enemy. Also core fighter kamikaze attack.

I think it's an interesting design choice that there is no universal melee button in this game.

How does one emote???

It's not. The "Super Napalm" was mentioned once in the original anime, being used to destroy the Gundam parts they couldn't take with them from Side 7. The lack of melee is really weird IMO for a Gundam game, given how ubiquitous beam sabers and melee weapons are in the franchise.

I'm not sure where I stand on the game just yet since it's been a long time since I played Overwatch, and my knee-jerk is that the game is just reskinned Overwatch. I honestly didn't have any technical issues with the hour or so I played. I'm a bit curious about the keymapping though. I noticed switching between suits that abilities aren't always mapped to the same set of buttons. That seems like an odd choice given the genre conventions.

Zaku II being an assassin gremlin is hilarious. Flank, burn someone down in seconds, if anyone looks at you toke up and run away cause you're made of recycled cardboard.

Overall game is well polished and easily better than Overwatch. That is if you like the faster pace and abilities being less important. Though I'm not super into the maps since they're fairly generic. Point Control is nice since it's a rats nest of pathways between the points, but in A/D I keep trying to take routes and hitting dead ends (maybe I don't wanna follow the line, okay?)

I got the chance to do some Zaku II fun tonight, and "gremlin" really does sum up his playstyle. You have enough mobility to dodge behind barriers or juke melee assassins like Exia and Barbatos, and enough utility in your stun grenade and smoke to stay alive or make plays. I 2v1'd against Barbatos and Exia just by timing my dashes and smoke to make them wiff their attacks and then magdump them.

If I stick with this, I'll probably main the GM and Zaku II partially for memes and partially because they both feel pretty good to play. The GM's heal grenade gives it some responsive teamfight utility and honestly makes the kit. I haven't had much luck with its shield bash and incindiary bomb, but the mines and the heal grenade combined with the shield make for a well-rounded frontliner.

Maybe that variant is, but the Marasai is one of the first upgrades off the Hizack Jerid and his fashy friends get in Zeta.

Pretty sure Kacricon dies in one.

Yeah I didn't catch that. I mentally filed it as a "Zeta Suit" but I suppose the Sea Serpent was added after its stint with the Titans.

Add the Physalis and its G Maneuver is to set off a nuke.

This is something that puzzles me because a lot of the high power flagship suits have these super jacked abilities that don't translate well to tight corridors and killboxes.

The Double X's twin satellite cannon would literally melt the whole stage. Are we just going to let it blast straight through all obstacles? (Didn't Hanzo do this in OW?)

My thoughts on Barbatos are to pick one of 1) prevent it from holding the stun charge 2) lower its HP or 3) remove a dash charge. I think of these, either 1 or 2 is the best since melee depends on mobility to be viable, with 1 probably being the best option. If it's still too oppressive after that, throw another one of those options at it (but don't do all three at once for the love of god).

Pale Rider with his machine gun feels the most regular shooty. What I mean by that is he probably feels the simplest to understand and play, so people probably dig him in the survey.

I mained Pale Rider and I thought it was fine. No game changer but no slouch either.

They also mentioned in the blog post that a lot of Barbatos players basically only played Barbatos, so they got really good at it too I guess.

Pale Rider's placing doesn't surprise me either because it's probably the most average "team shooter" character design. You have a machine gun that gets more accurate with aiming, a grenade, a healing placemat, and an ultimate that just buffs your stats for the duration.

It's a simple, easy to use kit that doesn't excel in every situation but also doesn't outright suck either. You'll always be able to contribute something to your team.

I'm honestly hopeful since they said the Unicorn's gimmick is providing buffs for the team. It's nice to have the flashy suit be a more support-oriented role.

2 months a season, with new units each season. Sounds kind of ambitious for balancing a shooter like this. (Might just be one unit. Looks like Unicorn is considered season 1, and melee zaku and mihiroo are considered starter base)

I wonder what's making the console release lag so far behind.

Often times it's publisher requirements for the various walled-garden stores. PC just seems to have less red tape in general. (For better or worse.) Sony and Microsoft (and Apple being the big one) tend to have very strict requirements for listing products and pushing updates, while Valve is just kinda "I dunno go nuts you've paid us our cut right?"

In the network test the flight-capable units were some of the only ones that had a good matchup against Barbatos, so probably.

Mahiroo and Dozle's Zaku are both extremely deep cuts that make me incredibly excited for what kind of weird poo poo they're going to cram in this game eventually. Unicorn being a team-oriented buff suit is also an extremely neat choice for a headline protagonist suit.

I wanna see the Turn A Kapool get in with a "rollout" style attack where it just goes Indiana Jones boulder on everyone.

lol nope. The Gouf we see in the OG anime was a production model though it wasn't produced for very long because it was essentially made immediately obsolete by the Dom and there was no good reason to keep the tooling for these hyper-specialist melee units.

The Gyan suffers basically the same fate, just with even fewer models produced and the only one we see in service is the one used by the guy who was irrationally attached to the program as his pet procurement project.

It was also "Jim" in the early-2000s TV dub. Ocean I think? The house Brad Swaile worked for.

Which honestly given the propensity of militaries to give dumb nicknames to things honestly makes it believable. HMMWV becomes "Humvee" in the colloquial. GM becomes "Jim."

of course as long as the awful monetization was there that would have also gone nowhere so

Yeah. I think launching at the same time as OW2 was a chance to be a massive boon. I remember the positive reaction it got, and the fact that OW2 was... well, y'know, Blizzard, controversy, etc etc, G-Evo could have legitimately eaten OW2's lunch.

gundam evolution was a game that defied common logic

And with how its release was timed, plus the praise it was picking up from some streamers at the time, it could have absolutely eaten Overwatch 2's lunch and what a loving wild timeline that would have been. I didn't really touch the game beyond the beta since arena shooters aren't really my jam, but goddamn we could be living in that world. Optimistic to be sure, but there was a clear path to achieving that.
