Kids in the Hall were and are a Canadian sketch comedy troupe.

This isn't precisely representative, but it's one my favorite sketches.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdLDC2VhMNo

Someone should maybe link one that's not so profoundly stupid.

I've seen two recent threads recently where someone almost correctly claimed that all sketch shows are mostly filler and someone else has correctly chimed in that this is definitely not true of KitH. Their stuff has held up better than Python because it was more firmly in touch with the culture of the time, better than Mr. Show only because none of its cast members invaded the US Capitol building on 6 Jan, and better than SNL because it's not mostly filler.

For reasons I support but do not understand, KitH has got a new season coming up a month from today on that bookstore website:

I saw them on tour about 7 years ago and they were as funny as ever. If you're too young or non-North American to have seen them before and you like sketch comedy, they're well worth checking out.

Awesome; I've seen two of them live but never the full group. Watching Brain Candy in theatre was second only to my SA registration for "definitely too young to be here".

Awesome. I can't wait to see more of Dave Foley in action. That guy has polished his comedy to perfection.

The thing about Kids in the Hall is that there weren't always punchlines. Also, there are definitely 'entry-level' sketches (My Pen, anything with Gavin, Daves I Know) and then the deeper cuts that only those who are already fans might appreciate more (Sausages, that gravel digging one posted earlier, Surviving a Bear Attack).

My all-time favourite one might by Cyril St John.

Kevin McDonald posted:

Every phase that I’ve been in my life, I’ve done it slowly and painfully. I didn’t have my first drink until I was 27. It became a Kids In The Hall sketch. Those of you Kids In The Hall nerds who are reading this one will know it. Before we had a TV show, we did a few dates in Alberta where Mark [McKinney] and Bruce [McCulloch] were from, and we played Calgary where Bruce grew up, and all his family came. And I remember thinking that it was a bad show. All the other shows we did were great in that particular little mini-tour, and that show was awful. And I remember thinking Bruce was affected by his family, because I had never seen a guy—especially someone as good as Bruce—be more off. He was just off. He couldn’t get a laugh. He couldn’t buy a laugh. He couldn’t set anyone up for a laugh. He was just awful.

After the show, we were all sitting in the green room talking about how bad the show was. It was unspoken, but we all knew that Bruce was awful. He comes to us and says, “I’ve never been more disappointed in the troupe.” Really, Bruce? You had the worst night I’ve ever seen a comedian have. “I’ve never been more disappointed in the troupe.” Not that I suffer from depression, but that started to depress me. Mark took me out, and for some reason, the only thing that was open that night was a gay bar by our hotel. It was Calgary, which is a cowboy town, and there was only one man in the bar, and he had a cowboy hat. Every now and then, he said, “This is my last drink, and then I’m going to go to my room and kill myself!” Which depressed me more. Mark said, “This is it. This is the night you have your first drink.” And then he said the words that became famous—minorly famous—in our sketch: “Have a margarita. You’ll like it. It tastes just like candy.”

Weird thing about this sketch; I believe that if you look up the word "percumbent" (sp?), you'll pretty much just find this sketch or references to it.

The word does not exist, and yet we all know what it means. It's like embiggen or cromulent.

Edit: so glad to see Danny Husk back in the red band trailer :allears:
