Hugh is perfectly fine because he’ll only be mildly under leveled compared to your other mages, due to the fact that only two of them can promote before his map. And he’s extremely easy to train due to Anima’s two great tomes and his own good bulk.

One thing the garbage hit rates do is that they make dodge tanks even stronger than normal on the GBA titles.

My bottom group didn't have any problems because it turns out that having someone who's literally invulnerable and can get thrown to the wolves safely does wonders. And leaves them all with like 10 HP for easy feeding of the lower level members. Clarine is probably the strongest iteration of dodge-tank Troubadour due to how bad the hit rates on weapons are in her game. And with how big the maps are in her game so that she actually reaches level 20 in a reasonable time frame just from how much healing there is to do. She can reach 0 chance of getting hit fairly reliably with just support bonuses.

Now, the problem that comes is that Rutger and Dieck are nowhere near as dodgy as she is, so you have to get creative with positioning (or just create a wall where no one else can get attacked more than once and throw Clarine in front of it)

I did lose someone though. Tate (or Thea in more recent translations). Coincidentally, it was on the top where I wasn't deploying the functionally invincible tank. Similar story to Dorothy's death in that she missed a shot I shouldn't have taken, and got critted in response. I was getting impatient with her though since she wasn't contributing at all since I didn't HAVE safe kills to give her.

I'm not looking forward to doing the desert map with a singular flyer.... Thany got killed earlier too (ironically to inattention with an archer).

Edit: I.... just realized that I can't get the true ending. Shin is already dead, and both flyers are dead so I can't even force Ilia route. Hmm.

Does the game default to Ilia if I did something dumb and killed off Sue? Or is it going to look at the fact that the dead Sue got more experience than the pegasi and lock me into Sacae anyways....
Oooof, that's rough. I've heard the game defaults to Ilia if nobody gets any exp, I don't know if dead characters count to that or not? I had a brief look online but a lot of the information I've seen is condradictory.

My most fearsome opponent yet... If only this game had a dragon's gate or deadlords chapter, I'd love for him to show up there so I could kill him twice.

From past attempts at this game I always had the impression that enemies tend to hit a lot more often at low% hit chances and your characters tend to hit less often at high% hit chances than in the other GBA games. Is it just me, or is that the case?
There was a persistent (false) rumour going around years back that this game uses a 1RN system. I think lower hitrates in general just messes with people when you're used to higher ones, your hitrates being closer to 50 than other games means the 2RN system benefits you a lot less, and with enemy hitrates being so low it hurts you much more when they do inevitably get an unlikely hit in, so you remember those unlucky hits more. Or at least that's my theory, this game's RNG is identical to the other GBA games but the lower hitrates all around make it seem different.

Functionally, a ballista is just a bow. You can even put them in people's inventories and carry them around siege tome style.

Fine.

Rip Dorothy and Echidna but those are all the pixels i have in me.
Yes, good. Garcia deserves to be wide without having to pick the worse promotion option!

I'd like to think the Roy ballista is Wolt's revenge for the entirely pointless sacrifice I made back in Chapter 7. I guess I did kill both of my infantry bow users, you had to use someone...

Sofiya I don't think is meant to be either these, but as the actual weight around your neck that she appears to be. She's only forced deployed in one map (coming up) and that map has two major conditions revolving around her. It's an escort mission, and Sofiya is helpless, worthless wyvern bait. Just count yourself lucky IntSys weren't deranged assholes and made her a green unit.
Sophia being intended as a deliberately bad unit you have to struggle to keep alive makes sense. Green unit Sophia fills me with fear but at least you could just pick her up. Grabbing her immediately with Cecilia will be my strategy for Chapter 14 when I do it, it will sandbag Cecilia a little but it'll also give me some insurance against positioning screwups and wyverns flying out of the fog to kill her.

She's got a physic staff. No reason for her to even be near combat. Which is good, because she won't be thanks to her dang horse.

I guess I'll be the first to test that and document it. I'm going to miss Sue, she actually leveled really well to the point that she was an adequate replacement for Sin.

I think you're probably right about this. I just started another playthrough and hit rates do seem more in line with what I should be expecting than they have in the past. They're just lower across the board due to lower hit stats for weapons and most units being worse in general than in FE 7 or 8.

Also it’s worth noting that enemies have an actual Luck stat, iirc enemy luck tends not to be super high aside from healer classes but it’s still a flat +X% evasion they won’t have in a lot of games, let alone FE7 with all the morphs.

Time for the dreaded Arcadia. A saying on the internet is that the chapters that are multiples of 7 in FE6 are the worst. My Chapter 7 was a bloodbath, will Chapter 14 be the same?

Barely surviving after a gruelling battle, the group decides to follow a strange girl into the middle of a desert. I guess it is on the way to the Etrurian capital...

Judging by the yellow tint of the map on the preview screen, this desert must be somewhere in Mexico. There appears to be a gigantic pyramid in the centre of Arcadia... What else do you build in the desert?

Thankfully Triangle Attack has a map preview in which we can actually see things. This desert might look pretty empty when you look at it without the fog, but it's much scarier when you're stumbling around blind in the sand... And reinforcements will fill it up soon. Not only does this mark the first appearence of Manaketes as generic enemies, we'll also be seeing Wyvern Lords too. This might not be a bad time to break out the legendary weapons! Although I'd rather keep mine in the convoy just in case the units carrying them die and cause me to miss out on the golden ending...

As is Fire Emblem tradition, this map also features a load of buried treasure hidden in the sand. Thieves have a 100% chance of picking up every buried item except the Guiding Ring, which only Sophia can collect. It's basically the only useful thing she does. Other units have a mere 9%ish chance that does not increase with luck. There is a special trick you can do to force regular units to pick up desert items which involves restarting the map and resuming the chapter, but I won't do it because I am a True Gamer and will not sully my playthrough with glitches and exploits... Just kidding! I actually won't do it because I'm too lazy to look up how to.

Deployment slots are pretty tight here... It might be time for me to start making cuts on who gets to be in my army. Cecilia's going to be forcibly deployed, so I don't need to bring 2 healers... Marcus may as well go since he's been falling off and he's also stuck on a horse. I may as well bring one Thief for the sake of my sanity. Ideally I would bring two, but there's not enough room!

Larum will load her pockets with valuables in the absence of Merlinus. Don't worry, Larum's got a Vulnerary and two jars of disinfectant if she accidentally hits herself with her Devil Axe while dancing!

Sin may as well promote now, he's at level 18 and he's barely earned any EXP towards the next level. He is however on a horse but he'll still be able to move a decent amount in the sand, Nomads aren't slowed down quite as much as Paladins are.

These random dragons are actually a little tougher than Ein from Chapter 13... They are however not on a throne, so they should be easier to hit and wear down. At least the game is nice enough to leave this one in sight range if you have a Thief to move around on the deployment screen so you know they're coming!

Even the residents of Arcadia don't want to be there any longer, they know how much it sucks. Fae actually shows up in FE7 to give you an item in that game's desert map if I remember correctly... She's one of the few characters to have had a localised name as old as FE7.

Can you turn the sandstorm off? It provides literally no hindrance to the enemies that it is supposed to be keeping out, but it sure makes life harder for me. The sandstorm is so strong it's even covering the speech bubbles...

The game warns you that there's buried treasure under the sand, but without a guide all you can do is wander around blindly. Given that you need to beat this map in 25 turns or less to unlock the associated gaiden chapter, you don't really have the time to investigate every tile in the hope it might have something you missed. Buried treasure is honestly a terrible mechanic and I'm so glad it no longer seems to be a series staple.

But enough talk, I've got 25 turns to beat this map and there's two new dead weights that need introducing. One of them isn't so bad, the other is a being of wet tissue paper who's survival is the other condition that needs to be satisfied in order to unlocke 14x.

Cecilia is Etruria's Mage General and Roy's former teacher. The combined failings of having her get absolutely demolished in a scripted fight, show up in the desert on a mount, and then have stats as low as these despite being advertised as one of Etruria's most competent generals all come together to create what is possibly the worst first impression given by any new unit in any Fire Emblem game... But she's still an okay unit! She's got Sophia to make her look better in comparison at any rate.

RES: 25%

Affinity: Anima (Defense, Avoid, Critical, Critical Evade)

Looking at Cecilia's stats alone, it's pretty easy to assume she's terrible. She's on the same level as or maybe even worse than Marcus, and he joined 13 chapters ago with many chances to level up and even then has probably fallen far behind the rest of your army. She's weak, she's slow, she's got weirdly awful skill, and even if she's got above average bulk for a mage she's not great in that regard either. Her growths are terrible all around and she's not got any promotion gains to save her.

But luckily for Cecilia, she also comes with an A rank in the best magic type in the game, a very respectable C rank in staves, and a mount that gives her 8 movement. That's basically all she needs to be helpful, she's got Aircalibur to hit wyverns and reliably accurate chip damage otherwise, she's got the starting staff rank to use Restore and just enough survivability to heal your allies on the front line, and like all mounted units she can ferry your allies around the map if nothing else. She's not going to be as good as a trained Clarine, but a trained Clarine will have required lots of time, effort, uses of your healing staves, and also a promotion item. You get Cecilia for free! Cecilia deserved much better stats than those that she was given, but at the end of the day she's really not all that bad. I'm probably going to use her in place of Saul from here on out.

My Rating: 6/10. Staffbot General.

Cecilia was a unit originally regarded as bad who people have come around on in the past few years... Will Sophia get the same treatment? The answer is no, Sophia is terrible. Maybe one of her alts in the mobile game is better...

HP: 60%

LCK: 20%
DEF: 20%
RES: 55%

Affinity: Dark (Accuracy, Avoid, Critical, Critical Evade)

Looking at Sophia's growths you might think she's an Est, a unit who joins late, starts terrible, but eventually gets really good. In a vague sense this is kind of true, her growths are pretty high and her 20/20 stats you could argue are better than Raigh's. Is it worth getting her to that point? Short answer no, long answer noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Holding a Flux tome, Sophia has 2 effective speed and 75% hit before factoring in the avoid of her enemy. That's too slow to double literally anything, and just fast enough to maybe avoid being doubled by Knights. Some of her lowest growths are in her skill, speed, and luck stats, so she's not going to be getting much faster or much accurate any time soon... With Flux she does at least have an effective might of 14, which means she can just about hit every non-magical enemy for single digit damage. After feeding 10-20 kills to this rice cracker of a human being you will eventually end up with someone about as strong as Raigh, a unit who joined 2 maps earlier who isn't even good. Given that she will have about a 50% chance of hitting anything, cannot take a counterattack at all, and will 3HKO enemies at the absolute most, this will take a long, long time... Not to mention that promoting Sophia will also use up one of your hotly contested Guiding Rings that really want to be going to just about anyone who isn't her. If you really want to use a dark mage, go with Niime or Raigh. If you really, really want to use Sophia... Play Heroes or Project Ember.

My Rating: /10.

Sophia sucks but what does not suck is treasure, and there's lots of it buried here. This bottom left corner of the map will be quiet for the first few turns of the map, so Astolfo's going to clean it out before the reinforcements come. Thieves don't have full movement in the sand like they do in the Tellius games, but they can still move pretty far!

With no Merlinus to take from, Raigh has to hold a Restore staff to give to Cecilia instead. There's at least one Sleep staff user lurking around here, which means I want at least 2 users of Restore at all times. The way the staff user AI works in this game is that in almost all situations they will target units in reverse order of deployment, and as Cecilia and Sophia joined after the chapter began they are therefore the biggest targets. Eating a Sleep is arguably more useful than any combat contribution Sophia could possibly have, but you do want to keep her alive for the gaiden and the Guiding Ring. Or the guiding and the Gaiden Ring.

I absolutely do not trust myself to keep Sophia alive so it's time for operation: extra life. So long as Cecilia is carrying Sophia, no enemy can kill the latter until the former dies first. Cecilia's not going to be entering any combat if I can help it so it wouldn't affect her usefulness at all. So I am allowed to make at least one fatal positioning error!

Sin promotes to a Nomad Trooper and gets a literal feather in his cap. I'd like him to shoot down some Wyvern Riders, so this map is as good as any even if it is full of sand. He can also use swords now but I forgot to give him one. It's not as if it would do him much good here...

Nobody can move very far except Melady, but I don't want her getting ganked in the shadows so she's staying with the rest of the group. So this is going to be a slow process of shuffling a giant ball of soldiers towards the exit. Sticking close together is probably for the best, so long as I have places to put all my units so they can attack the enemies near them.

First enemy sighted! It's a single Mage. Who knows what horrible tricks he has up his sleeve...

Well it's not an Aircalibur tome but it is a high crit Thunder. I really don't want Melady getting obliterated by magic out of nowhere, which is why she's hiding with the others despite this map not having a single bow user.

Ogier can lead the charge on account of being strong, but also kind of expendable. There's Wyvern Riders and Manaketes out here but I don't know if they will have moved from their starting positions or not... Better he bait them than them flying into my army with no warning.

Already my units are tripping over one another, slowed down because they can't occupy the same tile at the same time. Having 2 move sucks! Fire Emblem Heroes played a lot like this, or at least it did. I assume right now every single new unit has a new skill that gives them 10 extra move or teleportation powers or something, possibly based on some conditional that requires you to read a 5 paragraph wall of text to understand.

Hello! Anima has weapon triangle advantage over light magic, but fortunately for Elen being made out of glass also makes her very reflective and resistant. As cool as the magic triangle is, it's also kind of pointless? Mages can barely damage one another anyway, most of the time you would prefer not to fight magic with magic regardless.

A mysterious assilant puts Melady to sleep from within the shadows... I guess Cecilia wasn't in range. Elen can undo this next turn so it's no big worry.

It's not this guy. I thought it was because I fast forwarded through the Sleep animation, but there's actually a Bishop lurking around somewhere with a staff. I wonder what fog of war maps would be like if the enemy could not see through the fog either, and they had to deploy Torch staff users and Thieves to see... To be honest it would probably be way too easy to exploit their AI and kite them around so they could never attack you. But it might also be fun?

That's buried treasure number one obtained! Now Astolfo just needs to get out of here before the yellow spotted lizards get him. And the 2 Berserker bosses and their million reinforcements that will be appearing soon...

I'm not sure who I'm going to give this to. Possibly Lilina again? She's still pretty slow, and the rest of my army is quite fast. Raigh could also use it but I'm not really sure it's worth investing in him much at all.

...yeah, I wish I'd brought a second Thief instead of Raigh. At least he's better than Sophia! A bar so low I'd need that second Thief to find it beneath the desert sands.

It seems like I keep finding these enemies one at a time. Mages can move through the sand without any movement penalties, so they're a little more dangerous than normal... Annoyingly all the units I have who can use their full movement are either fragile magic users or Melady who really doesn't want to face anybody with magic.

Oh, there's a second enemy! I guess I aggroed all the wyverns at the top of the map... I hope Ogier hasn't wandered into range of them all at once, I think there's like 5 of them...

Well that absolutely could have gone worse. At least I know where they are now! I don't even think Ogier has an axe on him, but he seems to be dodging fine even when facing weapon triangle disadvantage...

I forgot I promoted him so early, his stats seem a little low now... But at least he's fast enough. That's all he needs!

Oh right, there's the Mage as well. I think one more failed dodge and that would have killed him. Good job it didn't!

Thank you Cecilia for being a consequence free target. If both Elen and Cecilia somehow ended up asleep I would be in trouble, but I think there's only one of these guys.

Restore's good for EXP, but not all EXP is good for good levels. I guess she does want HP.

Oh, I hadn't even seen these on the map! Thank you Cecilia. Now who do I give these to? When in doubt I tend to go for either the lord or the dancer...

I'm sure Larum would like a pair of big stompy boots, what she's wearing right now can't be good for travel. Every point of HP and defense is an extra point of damage she can survive... I feel as if most enemies I'm facing do more than 22 per hit though.

Elen's just about bulky enough that I can have her rush forward to heal Ogier, even if he ends up missing on his next hit and she ends up in range of these two. When I support her with Melady and maybe Zeiss she might be able to follow them into combat and not have to worry too much about getting hit.

Thankfully she doesn't need to be tanking anything. I've only got 25 turns to build supports, but maybe she could build some with Melady right now...

That's all the wyverns here lured out, and I think that's all the Sleep staff uses too. At least on this half of the map anyway, there's more wyverns and probably more horrible staves near Arcadia itself.

That's 3 treasures now! I wonder who wants this? Probably Lance or Lot, but Melady might appreciate it too. There's lots of units in my army great in everything but luck and resistance.

Hello! I don't think Manaketes move without provocation so I could probably ignore this guy, but I'd prefer him dead regardless. I didn't bring Durandal or Armads, but Lance does have his Wyrmslayer.

Oh look, there's another offensive staff! Thankfully Sin has a Silence spell of his own, it just needs to be loaded into a bow and fired at an enemy's throat to work.

Arcadia is in sight... The space inside the city is entirely empty besides the boss, I could have Melady fly Roy and a boss killer over the wall and be done with this map quickly if I really wanted. I'd miss out on all the cool loot if I did that though.

Lance will stay behind to face this dragon and also the reinforcements who will be appearing very soon. He's got healing items, he can survive for a while... But that is a lot of damage.

He almost 2HKOs in return, but he does have to hit first. How do you miss a dragon this big? In fact he's not even missed it, his sword is sticking into its skull!

Before Victor and Vincent, there were Maggie and Rose. I've said this before but there will be no true equality in Fire Emblem until we can get a pair of gay ugly bandit bros as playable units. Llyod and Llewyn don't count!

There aren't any vistable villages on this map, which means the only people getting their heads mashed in will be us. Thankfully Lance can defend himself more than a village can.

In fact all of these guys should end up being free EXP if things go to plan. Lance is extremely hard to hit already and the sand tiles provide extra avoid, they won't stand a chance against him!

Although these stats do look a little scary. 19 skill... That's actually quite high! Possibly higher than anybody in my army except maybe Sin.

The Silver Card gives whoever's holding it 50% off all items they buy in shops. It must be made of tough stuff if it could survive being dropped in the desert! I always imagined these as being like credit cards, but obviously those don't exist yet. But if they did I would totally have a guy steal Narcian's credit card and ruin his credit score buying thousands of Killer Axes.

Boo! At least it's not a blank level, I'm really surprised to have not gotten one of those yet. Lot might start getting them soon though, he's 3 points away from his cap.

Oh hello. This little stretch of desert is all sword guys... It's not a bad place for Melady to earn EXP.

...but maybe I should be a little careful. He could have killed her if he had managed to crit twice in a row! Both Ogier and Echidna manage to kill a couple of dragons each already, I don't want Melady dying to a Hero too.

I would really not like a high attack high speed high evasion guy running around and critting my guys so he's got to die right now before he causes any damage. I can't complain about bulk on Lilina's last level, even if it's probably not going to help her survive anything she couldn't already.

Everybody's got just enough crit to potentially get one on Melady. Now how about you stay at that height and don't come down so the enemies can't hit you? Your lance has more reach than his sword, just fly above his head and poke him.

This was closer than it looked, if none of my units had been able to hit this guy he would have caused me some real problems. I would much prefer it if I were the only one who could use high speed soldiers armed with high crit weapons...

Has Raigh gained a single point of magic yet? I can't say I'm too hopeful about his long term prospects... Or his short term ones honestly, he's not very good right now either. At least he's hitting his Fluxes mostly consistently?

15 turns left and Arcadia is getting closer. There's a small patch of open terrain near the walls, but I still need to move fairly slowly or else I might accidentally bait a whole load of wyverns all at once. There is a big group right outside the entrace...

And there's also these guys. Lance can't move very fast through the sand, so I guess I have comitted him to fighting these two now. What does the other one look like?

Oh! Well maybe this was a bad idea. Let's hope he can't hit anybody with that?

...yep, this was a bad idea. Maybe Lance should move in the opposite direction instead... I'm used to bosses not being able to touch him, why is this random guy even scarier than Dory?

It would be nice if he were on this side instead, he's probably the only guy besides Sin who could double these.

Luckily I have the unstoppable force of Roy on a tree on my side. Or possibly Roy around a tree? I'm not exactly sure how a single palm tree provides a defensive bonus. Maybe the Merc is chasing him around it trying and failing to hit him while the Benny Hill theme plays.

That was the one single point of EXP he needed to reach his last level. It's... not very good. At least he has skill! That's got to be the highest combined skill and luck total in my army.

Melady is skilled but also great in other ways, unlike Roy. 15 speed is pretty high! I don't think I need to use the Speedwings on her, she's getting much faster very quickly.

I have three competent frontliners in this group, which is just enough to make a defensive line in the sand. I guess Sin also counts but he's ben trying to catch up to the rest of my army ever since I sent him off to shoot that Priest.

Well I've laid my stupid bed, now I've got to die in it. I don't think it's too likely for him to hit and crit Lance... But it could still happen.

Ow, that isn't supposed to happen! At least he didn't get crit. If I do see the beginnings of Rose's critical animation I'm just going to have to hope the Devil Axe betrays him...

Lots of very productive combat is going on here. Lilina gets no EXP for this but someone has to hit something or we'll be here all day.

Heroes are the worst enemy type, I hope this guy was the last. I wonder, should I promote Melady next chapter? If I had the resources I could even promote her now, regardless of when she promotes she's going to cap everything but luck, defense, and resistance. Any extra levels are just more oppurnities for her to hit those 25%ish growths.

Elen to the rescue! Her magic's high enough that her Physic range covers half of the map. If only she could come to the rescue with a literal Rescue staff, then Lance would have a better chance of escaping this.

That's one guy dead. I hope it did hurt, you're embarrassing me! This is a very stupid situation I've gotten myself into.

None of those stats are going to help you survive, Lance! Or I guess HP might but somehow I don't think he's living a Halberd crit.

As tempting as it is to hug the wall to Arcadia or just fly over it, there's some very valuable loot in the sand down there... Namely the Warp staff. Unfortunately it's also guarded by a huge host of wyverns and dragons, so Lot's going to have to go in and sort them out.

Oh hello ambush spawns! I knew they would appear here and they're going to do nothing to Lance besides break his weapons with their skulls, but I wish they would go away all the same. I suppose the EXP is nice...

Once again he's going to have to put his life on the line. I really overestimated how much avoid he would have... Normally I'd be sending Rutger to do this, but even he would be facing high chances of death without a support partner or two.

Maybe Elen should be fighting the Berserkers instead. She really likes proccing that 20% speed growth! Maybe if I can find lots of inaccurate enemies and a tile that boosts her avoid I can grind out her light magic rank.

There are the wyverns. At least Sin's in range to shoot them now.

...wait, why did I do that? Now he's right in the middle of a huge group of enemies. I probably need to fix this, the golden ending is riding on his survival...

It's okay, he's probably fine if I get rid of just one of these guys. I complained a lot about the Torch staff being useless last FoW map but now I wish I'd saved mine...

No bulk is unfortunate, but at least she's a little more evasive. Maybe I should find her a support partner...

Two out of three isn't bad. Sin's got so much HP that he can take a lot of hits even if his bulk isn't spectacular...

Either these walls are very short or Astolfo is on stilts, because his arrival is enough for me to see all the way over to the boss. It's another Hero! Maybe we're the bad guys if we keeping fighting all these heroes...

The Brigand reinforcements are also coming in from the south. How do they survive in the middle of the desert? They must get awfully sunburned with no shirts on.

There's so many reinforcements here that the Berserker boss can't even wade through them to reach Lance. Could this be his oppurtunity to escape?

And there's another Manakete. If only I didn't need that Warp staff, then I could ignore all these enemies altogther...

Ugghhh, Thunder tomes are the worst. I'm fed up of all these minmaxed super units who don't have any luck! I'm not losing her to a stupid 1% crit, someone else can handle this.

Unfortunately the incompetence of Maggie's minions couldn't hold him back forever... Good thing his hit is the lowest of all his combat numbers.

Yeah it does suck when you die because all your shots miss but what can you do? That's your fault for bringing a Halberd to a desert map, who would be dumb to field any cavalry units in all this sand?

Now he's free to take all the reinforcement EXP he wants until his sword breaks. I don't think he'll be able to reach the other half of the map any time soon to help out the rest of my army...

Oh, Manaketes can crit? Not that he did, but the thought is scary enough. Why does nobody good have a luck stat in this game??? Lot's so far above his averages, he should be the luckiest man in my army!

Oh great, now the Warp zone is full of reinforcements too. I could maybe send Astolfo in and have him dodge all of their axes, but his avoid won't be nearly as good as Lance's...

I can't believe Elen is my best dragon-slaying unit after Lance. Every LP needs a silly joke unit who becomes a god, with Dorothy dead I might have to have Elen deal the final blow against Idunn.

I'd stick Melady in front of the Manakete and have her whittle it down but like Lot her luck is too low. I certainly can't complain about her other stats though! In a single map she's gone from decent to amazing.

Byeeee! She shone her light so hard it turned the dragon transparent.

I think it's just bandits and the boss left now, which means lots and lots of EXP until either they run out or I hit the turn limit. This is almost a perfect level... How are you going to survive 14x without res, Ogier?

Now give that ring to a responsible adult before you choke on it. You still need to live for as long as it takes me to seize this village!

Lilina is now fast! Or fastish. 14 speed is still kind of slow... But 22 magic is very high. Now to get her staff rank up so she can do silly things with Warp.

Lilina's actually going to be my best bet against Randy. The Light Brand deals a fixed 10 damage at its target from range, which considering his high strength is more more than he'd be doing up close, so the best way to fight him is from a distance. Lilina can hit him against his weaker defensive stat while also being able to stand far enough away that someone can heal her without being in danger themselves.

She also gets weapon triangle advantage because its ranged attack counts as light magic. Neat! She's only 1 more point accurate than he is though.

I choose old age, 80 years after having killed you.

You can't kill Lilina, her dress it too white and reflective! The way her hair blends into her cape makes it look like she's got hair longer than she is tall.

Oh right, I forgot I don't have any money because I spent it all on killer weapons. I'll take an Elfire or two anyway, Lilina's going to be going through them fast now she's promoted and maybe even fast enough to double stuff.

Astolfo would buy things at a discount and sell this stupidly heavy Silver Blade but he's all the way out in the corner searching for the Warp staff. If only someone could warp him over!

That's macho man Randy savaged, and an escape route secured. As soon as I have all of my loot I am out of here. Lance will find his way back on his own...

It wasn't an honour to kill you, the EXP you gave stunk! Lilina can do way better than this.

Lance broke his other swords and now has to waste his Wyrmslayer... I don't think it's worth wearing this thing down any more just to get EXP. Cool level though.

Nice, nice, nice, and nice. Now let's get out of here! Standing around in the fog makes me nervous, even if I know all the dangerous flying enemies are now gone.

And all with 2 turns to spare. That could have gone a lot worse! I could have been 3 units down with worse luck this map, easily. It's nice to spared the consequences of my actions for a change. Hopefully my lack of deaths in fog of war will continue...

We sure did. Now let's go and put this Warp staff to use so I can get everybody killed in even more pointless repeats of what happened to Lugh in Chapter 4.

It wouldn't be as memorable of an ironman if there wasn't moments of luck barely carrying you through! I can recall far too many moments of RNG saving me from plays gone bad.

Fog maps are usually where I lose my units in the GBA games, and I know I always lose someone here in this drat desert. Even with a thief and a torch staff, I end up losing track of some reinforcement somewhere and someone gets picked off or sentenced to death by attrition.

Oddly this didn't happen in the recent FE8 attempt I did though, both fog maps went fine, it only ended because I forgot to heal Ephraim and a low level mage shot him. I've grown too used to the on-map HP bars of the 3DS games, I think.

Enemy berserkers are the absolute worst. High damage is one thing but just tilting the RNG against the player means you can lose and it's not even your fault. Like, nobody has high enough Luck to negate a berserker's crit rate, it's stupid.

Impressive run of 14, though!

The funny thing is that a character is much more likely to zero out a berserker's hit chance before their crit, it's a bit silly? Especially with the weapons they generally have.

You kind of need support bonuses to do either really though, since most Berserkers you encounter don't let you get the terrain advantage.

Niime with an angelic robe and maybe a speedwing is a very competent Nosferatu tank, and the best warp user along with Saul. She's hardly a bad unit.

Canas and Raigh are both competent as well, so at least half the shamans in gba fe are decent to good.

Oh, god, I just assumed that Cecelia always starts with a Physic staff, not just in Ember. I foolishly assumed no good game designer would dump such a terrible unit in a map that plays to none of her strengths. Maybe if there wasn't time pressure. Maybe if there wasn't Fog of War.

Canas is great even without Luna around -- it's just that Luna makes him one of the best Scary Unit killers in the game along with early-game Silver Lance Marcus. Mixed bulk and a weapon type that usually has advantage over other mages, since Nergal and the Fang don't have a ton of monks in service, make for a supreme problem solver. Dark magic is pretty undercut in 6 thanks to all of its users being too weak to carry around the books and not having many of the good ones that'll come in later games. Niime's utility comes mostly from having such a good staff rank and Magic stat to exploit it. Dark magic in general wildly flip-flops in utility -- from FE9 where it doesn't exist to 10 where it's, for some godawful reason, locked behind NG+ and a single unit, into Awakening and Fates where it's grossly overpowered to incredibly useful (even if 'Dark Magic' has only become Nosferatu by that point).

Oh no, that's an extremely unfortunate way to lose an ironman...

Arcadia's tricky but I don't think I hate it that much. The enemies are spread out and the turn limit it gives you for the gaiden is actually pretty generous, so you can take your time. Or maybe I'm just saying that because nobody died this time!

Ngl I thought Project Ember's way of balancing her would just be to move her somewhere else. Maybe have Igrene come to meet you at the start of the map and delay Cecila's recruitment until Chapter 14x or 15 with the excuse that she's still recovering from her wounds...

What's interesting about Canas is that he's always been considered great by casual players thanks to Luna, but he's only recently started to be considered good by the efficiency/tier list type players. Apparently his promotion gains are pretty great and you can give him a Guiding Ring soon after you get him and he'll be a solid combat unit for a long time, and all the mandatory defend/survive maps the game throws at you are great for raising his staff rank up too. I don't think I've ever played an FE game "efficiently" so I can only comment on what other people are saying, but it's interesting seeing people change their minds on characters years after their game was released.

I stabbed you dude!
I like Canas but he's a member of what I call "Team Eliwood". Characters whose growth rates are all fairly average and are therefore more dependent on the RNG than any other unit. He'll either turn out top-tier or terrible, with no real middle ground. What separates him from Eliwood is the fact that he is still the only Dark Magic user so unless he gets like, 5 empty levels in a row he still has a niche he can fill.

I'm really not sure what they were going for with Eliwood and Roy, to be honest. The other Lords (in the GBA games at least) are at least modeled after a basic class, if a little better (IE, Hector is a Knight+ (unless your name is Artix and you're playing Hector Hard Mode), Ephraim is a Cavalier minus the horse...), but with those two it's like they were trying to go with the Maxim model. All around above average, but not great at anything. And that's not a good idea when stat gains are purely at the mercy of the RNG

EDIT: I also started Project Ember after reading about it here. I'm towards the end and my army is being lead by a ridiculously blessed Lillina whose drat near maxed every stat and a Sophia who was clearly determined to make up for a lifetime of not being used. Roy decided he'd model himself after Edward from Final Fantasy IV. Fragile, weak, but ain't nothin' gonna hit him

Chapter 14x: The Infernal Truth... We're not about to learn some horrible and game changinging truth in this chapter, it's just the name of the weapon we're getting. How disappointing!

I'm not entirely sure why it's called what it is... In Japan anima magic is known as reason magic, and the chapter is known as Hellfire's Reason in Japanese. There's leftover text data in the English version of FE7 which has rough localisations of chapter names from FE6, including 14x which is named Hellfire's Truth. I guess this fan patch changed it because localisers have been kind of squeamish about saying hell in the past?

The important thing is that reason magic sounds lame as hell. Light mages DESTROYED by FACTS AND LOGIC. You would want to shove a reason mage in a locker so bad.

Welcome to the Water Temple! FE7 has a map like this too, and it sucks. This way too huge map features a whole lot of water, and a variable amount of temple. The platforms beneath you will disappear and reappear not at random, but at weird enough times in weird enough patterns that it may as well be. The bridge leading to the throne will slowly begin to disappear starting from turn 7, so if you're not fast enough you'll have to either walk the entire way around or have a flier carry people over. Mostly this gimmick is just dumb and annoying, it wastes a lot of time and it's hard to plan around. The one big thing to watch out for is that if a unit who cannot cross water gets stuck with no land tiles next to them then they'll be unable to move until either picked up or the bridge comes back. Thankfully nobody can drown!

That's not the extent of this map's gimmick however. These halls are guarded by Oates, a man who must be very careful not to fall into the water or else he'll turn this place into the Porridge Temple.

Don't be fooled by him being like 80 years old, Oates is fast! He's got 18 speed, very high stats all around... And he has Bolting, a long range anima tome that will severely complicate things, turning allies trapped by the disappearing bridges into sitting ducks for him to pick off at a distance. Like all other magic, Bolting is much lighter in this game than it is in other ones, so Oates still has an effective speed of 15 when using it. That is just about enough to double some of my slower units like Raigh.

He also has a friend with another Bolting tome just to make your life worse. He can't move from where he's standing so he's a little less dangerous than his range on the map might indicate, but he's still going to create a big danger zone on the map where most of your allies won't want to stand.

There's also this jerk with Eclipse and Physic. Eclipse is terrible and bad and can't hit anybody, but two Physics mean that anybody you don't kill is probably getting their health healed back up to full.

Oh and there's also Wyverns and Pirates and even a Berserker to walk over the water and ruin your day. I think every map from here on out is going to have Wyverns and a Berserker.

Oh right, I picked up some stat boosters last map. And the map before... I'm sorry to say that despite stopping to make a screenshot of these I still forgot to give them to anybody this time around. At least I'm forgetting to use them and not refusing to use them out of indecisiveness? I promise I'll distribute them next map! The Speedwings should probably go to Lilina, the other two I'm not so sure about. Any 3 out of Melady, Lance, and Lot probably want the Talisman, the Body Ring could go to Melady as well? Or Sin if I don't want to hurt her ability to carry people.

At least I remembered to bring these. My best choices for these were either Roy, Lot, or Larum... I went with Larum in the end, Roy's extra movement won't help him seize faster if he can't survive on the front lines and Lot's never had much issue catching up so far. Larum can't promote and definitely needs the extra movement to keep up with my army of 6 MOV units.

I have a devious plan for which I require Elen, plus 2 other staff users with at least a C rank in staves. This is probably the last time Saul will get to do anything, assuming he doesn't have to be brought in as a replacement for someone who dies.

The Arcadians have managed to survive off of an underground reservoir below their village. Presumably Bern's evil plan is to pee in it so nobody can drink from it anymore.

Time to enact my master plan. Step 1: Use Barrier on Lot. I do need a Lot of resistance for this map.

Step 2: Use Barrier on Lance. Roy needs to stand in the middle to make this trade work, I couldn't get Lance and Lot to stand next to one another without wasting one of their actions...

Step 3: Use the Warp staff to bypass this map's tedious geography.

Which requires Larum to let Elen use the Warp staff twice in one turn, she's the only person capable of using it. Her magic is just barely high enough to get Lance over there... I didn't count the squares before doing this, I'm glad it all worked out!

Warping is a lot of effort! Ideally Elen would be gaining magic to make her future Warps even more effective...

Finally, step 5: make oatmeal.

Oh, I've put up nothing yet. Unfortunately I wasn't expecting him to put up much a fight either, his avoid is so high that this strategy is far from reliable. Lot is giving Lance a pretty hefty boost to his avoid, but not to his accuracy...

...I think I spy the better target here. Lance can handle Oates, Lot can take out the nameless Bolting Sage behind him. And then Roy and company can walk right up to the throne unopposed!

Rude! Curse these advancements in tome technology that made Bolting much lighter in the years between FE7 and FE6! All these mages are casting spells from their kindles now, they don't have to worry about lugging around giant spellbooks older and heftier than they are.

Unfortunately there are two less dead guys here than I had hoped to see, but Lancelot should be ready to fight their way out of this situation regardless. The fast way to clear this map would be to warp both Roy and a bosskiller, and considering Lance's support with Roy he probably would have had a better shot at killing Oates with his help instead of Lot's. There would however have been the issue of Roy getting utterly destroyed on enemy phase has the plan not worked perfectly.

Melady whips her wyvern which cuases it to change colour somehow. Maybe they work like those old TVs that would sometimes be off colour until you thumped them. I'm not sure how I feel about this new colour scheme, it's not as striking as her old one.

You can't say these stats aren't striking though. Tremble in fear, mortals! The fourth horseman of the apocalypse is here and it turns out she's a woman riding a wyvern. I'd Warp her into the middle too but she's got nobody to support with yet.

Oates would rather cast the world's shortest Bolting than try to strike a man who could kill him on enemy phase. Bolting has a minimum cast range because close range lightning strikes are really rough on your eardrums.

The backup Sage annoyingly decides to heal Oates back up to full, triggering the boss music to play in the process. Then the two of them turn into floor tiles because GBA FE screenshots look really weird if you just happen to grab the wrong frame. This temple is actually paved with the bodies of trespassers who have been transformed by Athos's potent magic... How horrifying!

Nearly all the enemies are headed towards the centre now. It's only the magic ones I fear, these unpromoted physical units are going to be dealing like 4 damage per hit tops.

A small handful of enemies close to the start ignore my sequence breaking and go for Roy and his friends. It should be easy enough to camp in the starting area and tank the few enemies that are approaching until the Bolting users are gone...

Well I guess that last turn was completely pointless. Maybe I should wipe out the healers first?

Oh and there goes some of the floor! This has absolutely no consequence whatsoever, although Lilina's nice new Sage robes might now be soaked. Melady will carry Roy over the gaps when the time comes regardless.

Trying to kill Oates over and over and failing seems like the worst way to approach this. Lance can take out the Bolting Sage first...

While Lot will heal up and stand here to force Oates to risk his life attacking on enemy phase. He could try to take out that Druid now, but if he messes up then he cleanly 2HKOs him...

This single point marks the extent of Oates's range from where he's standing, so I just have to make sure not to put Roy or anyone fragile there. Seige tomes were so much more annoying before they added the ability to track enemy ranges on the map...

Boots! Larum can run much further in these pratical leather shoes. Now I won't have to worry about her getting left behind.

Roy and the gang will be staying put for a little while longer, but I want to boost his resistance just in case I screw up and somehow put him in Bolting range. Melady could try to fight that Berserker now but it's much less risky to let him come to me.

Unfortunately there's no spot where Lot can stand far enough away from Oates for him not to be in Elfire range, but also close enough to not be in Bolting range either. He does have a slight chance to kill him with each swing but it's much less than what Lance has.

Otherwise nobody is in any danger at all. All they're doing is wasting the durability of my killer weapons!

What a nice level for this map! Lot needs both of those things. He still can't double Oates so long as he's using Elfire though.

It's just a little crowded in here. I think I want that Druid gone... The other one with Eclipse and Physic is behind so many enemies that it would take a few turns to reach him.

Bye bye Berserker! It's nice to see people getting luck.

And bye bye this random Pirate. Melady can use swords as a Wyvern Lord, I just didn't think to give her any. As you can see the weapon triangle means little to her.

I just have to make sure he doesn't enter the range of the 4 Archers on this map. She could totally kill them if she got close enough though.

I've been trying to avoid healing allies who don't need to it conserve staff uses and therefore money, but I want to grind up Lilina's staff rank. If she somehow managed to reach A in staves she could Warp people across entire maps... It might require a lot of grinding to get that far, but it's possible!

Oh right, the disappearing floor. I'm just ignoring all of this, I haven't even looked up what's going to disappear and when. This is in the bottom right corner of the map, it's not blocking off anything important.

With the Noserfaru Druid gone I would now be free to wail on Oates as much as I like, but there is unfortunately not much room to do so here. This map is huge and yet all the enemies are stuck in one tiny room...

Lot can clear out space for Lance to keep fishing for a lucky crit. I wish there was a third unit both of these two could support to increase their accuracy a little. Lance does have his Roy support, but it's too scary for him to exist here. Lot unfortunately has outlived the entirity of his support log save for Lance...

Nice! Good job Larum, you're slowly getting harder to kill. If I'm ever feeling particularly shameless at the end of a map I might grind Larum up to level 20 and have Lilina heal her after every level for EXP...

Why are there so many Pirates? Who would even send Pirates to a desert??? If this keeps up then Oates is going to die from lack of oxygen in this room.

At least all the Archers have gone to pile up in the middle room. Taking out this Physic Priest should help things die a little faster.

Unfortunately this does make Melady a target for Bolting. Not that she's in a huge amount of danger, thanks to Barrier and her huge amount of HP she is pretty resiliant.

Oh no, Roy's drowning! LP over, Roy fell into the water and died because he was carrying like 5 different swords and they weighed him all the way down to the bottom.

After a few more swings, Lance finally succeeds in making steel cut Oates. This wasn't even a crit, I do feel a little robbed. I learned to fight like this from watching LTC playthroughs, the quick to doing anything fast is the Warp staff.

I guess this map has shown that resistance is useful, so I'll allow this. Melady and Sin are catching up to him, soon he won't be a super unit but instead a regular guy.

King Lot shall rule this temple from his new throne. Now to shoot down all these peasants from his lofty perch.

The way is clear, time to put the birthday boy in his big boy chair. Promoting only made Melady a little heavier, her wyvern can still lug him around too. If you look to the right you can see that King Lot's reign was brief but eventful, he lost the throne when he left to go shoot somebody who was standing far away.

Supporting Lilina with Cecilia seems wiser than supporting her with Astolfo, she's more likely to be close to the front lines than he is. She'll boost her damage and avoid even more, and Lilina won't have to worry about Cecila stealing herboyfriend because A supports are mututally exclusive with one another in this game! ...it's really weird that Cecilia can marry Roy.

There we go, Roy has been escorted to his chair. He'll have to walk the rest of the way because there's a scary man with a bow who wants to shoot his chauffeur.

I was wrong about Melady being "nearly" as good as Lance, she's straight up better now. 20 in strength, speed, and defense is nuts. She just needs to beat up Narcian and steal his thingy that removes flying unit's weaknesses and she'll be invincible!

12 turns of infernal truthing. I'm not going to clean up the rest of these enemies, this map's gimmick is dumb and I don't want to deal with it any longer. These few soldiers can live so that they may tell tales of the deadly teleporting Lancelot duo that killed all of their friends.

Pictured: the only units I need to finish the rest of this game.

That's right! It's the legendary Luna tome. That's what Athos used to beat the Fire Dragon in FE7...

It's not actually that, Luna doesn't exist in this game. It's called The Infernal Truth because nobody's going to tell you you're wrong so long as you have a magical tome that can set them on fire.

Now that we've robbed the locals we should probably introduce ourselves to them. Unfortunately the only dragon they have left is a toddler, as is Fire Emblem traditon. We won't be able to conscript this child into our war just yet.

Surprise, Sophia is actually the lovechild of Bantu and Fiona. If they really wanted to add insult to injury they'd make her weak to Wyrmslayers like Corrin is...

You're probably better off saving the speedwing and/or body ring for Niime, if you're going to pair it with one or two Angelic robe purchases in the secret shop. Niime does everything your Lilina does, but without the hassle of having to grind her up. Plus, she gets access to Nosferatu.

I feel like it's tempting fate not to use those items. "Oh I will give the speedwing to X the next time... oops, now X was doubled and died, which wouldn't have happened with those points of speed from the speedwing..."

this pit is full of stat boosters

There's 3 new recruits to get here, yet it feels like a filler map all the same. None of them couldn't have been moved to different chapters to be recruited... I wonder how many people I'll get killed on this easy map?

After following a strange woman into the desert, Roy and his army decide to follow a different strange woman out of the desert. Hopefully she'll lead us to a better map than last time!

Hot on their pursuit is a terrifying human/monster hybrid that can transform into a dragon. She's totally going to eat Roy if she catches up with him.

Here's a nice little breather map in between two rather difficult ones. The enemy's fort is situated behind a big mountain we have to walk all away around, but thankfully they have very little set up to take advantage of their position. No ballistae, no seige tomes, even their flying units are tucked away in the corners. There are 2 bow users in the middle who might inconvenience your fliers a little, but if you wanted you could easily beat this chapter via flyskipping and rescue dropping regardless.

Raith is a man whose hair, nose, and chin all combine to make his side profile look like a horizontal trident. His portrait apparently was interesting enough that Project Ember included a palette swap of him as a secret recruit... There's otherwise nothing threatening about this guy, he's just a nice breather boss. Raith is an odd name, it's not quite Rath and it's not quite Wraith.

The only real enemies of note here (besides the recruitable ones, of course) are these Valkyries. Enemy Valkyries have always been rare in FE games, but the ones you do find tend to be menaces with very mean stats. 20 speed is extremely scary considering how high their magic is, and they're hard to hit reliably... I have mentioned before how I think Cecilia is still useful despite her mediocre stats, but...

...it just feels a little like this.

Forblaze is a little weaker than the other divine weapons on account of being a tome, but it's still very strong good and great for deleting dragons. Unfortunately it's just a little too heavy for Lilina to use without losing speed. It also boosts luck by 5 points, which is at least a little more useful in this game than it is in others thanks to decently high enemy crit rates all around... But there are better stats it could be boosting. Lilina will appreciate not being crit by Manaketes at any rate, she's actually a little behind on her luck stat.

Due to some rather poor planning on my part, it seems I've almost ran out of bog standard Iron Swords... I've got some second hand ones laying around in people's inventories, but none that are fresh. This is especially annoying, because...

...I have lots of spares of other weapons. It's hard to know what to buy when you can't see your own inventory! Maybe I need to write myself a shopping list.

I may as well have Roy hold onto this, he can hold whatever valuable stuff he likes since if he dies the entire run dies with him. Do lords know how much common goods cost? A shopkeeper might try selling him a sword for 10000G and claim that's the discounted Silver Card price.

Okay I remembered this time, this stuff is getting used, I promise! Lilina can have the Speedwings because she's just on the threshold of being able to double things now. This is her second wing so if she flaps her arms really hard she should be able to fly.

Melady can have a Talisman to make magic less scary. Lot and Lance would appreciate this too, but they've got each other to boost their own defense and crit avoid. Melady is all alone in this world... You can't support a wyvern.

Sin can have the Body Ring since I don't know who else to give it to. I guess he'll appreciate being able to use Steel Bows and Swords without AS loss? Much like a nose ring goes on your nose, I can only assume the Body Ring goes on the body, so this must be a gigantic hula hoop that Sin's training with to build up his core muscle strength. Can you hula while riding a horse? I bet Nomads can.

Raigh's officially off of the team to make room for Klein. Klein's probably going to end up getting replaced too, but I really don't see myself spending a Guiding Ring on Raigh at this point...

Larum's hiding all the way in the back to recruit a certain someone. He's not here on the ingame map preview, but he and his cronies are visible on the map I posted above if you look.

How dare these people capture an innocent young girl! I wanted to capture that innocent young girl to use in my army! Some people have no sense of right and wrong. This entire map is a detour to rescue Fae, who's wandered all the way from the desert to here while following Roy and his army.

Sir Not Appearing in this Map is here with Sir Didn't Appear on the Prep Screen. Perceval's only here because he wasn't recruited or killed in Chapter 13... Recruiting him here is much easier than it would have been then.

This is true! Good luck trying to recruit Douglas when the time comes. Thankfully Perceval only needs to talk to Larum... A fragile 5 MOV unit who will easily die in one hit to him if not his four cronies.

Hang on, you weren't in my army before! I do need a new Sniper girl after I killed Dorothy by way of not paying attention. Who is this new and exciting Sniper who is probably going to kick Klein straight back to the bench?

It's Igrene! Daughter of Hawkeye from FE7, she might not be as comically swole as her dad but she's still pretty cool. Impressive that her lipstick has survived the dry heat and sandstorms of the Nabatan desert.

HP: 75%
STR: 35%
SKL: 25%
SPD: 35%
LCK: 20%
DEF: 10%
RES: 5%

Affinity: Ice (Defense, Accuracy, Avoid, Critical Avoid)
Support Partners: Fae, Sophia, Saul, Astolfo, Douglas

Igrene is like Klein but with better bases and worse growths. That's basically it... Besides Igrene's severely worse luck stat, their bases and 20/20 averages are pretty much the same. So I guess she's better than Klein if you haven't been using him and worse if you have. I haven't been using him, so I guess she's better! That's good, because she's also way cooler.

My Rating: 6.5/10. High temperature Sniper Wolf.

Here's the guy that she isn't, for comparison. He's luckier I guess! But he's also quite a bit slower. They even have the same affinity.

Perceval and his cronies have also snuck into this map, although he's going to need some convincing first. Here's why you don't recruit him early in Chapter 13 - look at those stats! He doesn't get those normally. Not being on the prep screen and instead spawning in as the map started was enough for him to bypass the check that prevents the likes of Raigh from getting Hard mode bonuses. I'll do my best not to get Larum killed trying to recruit him.

There's a certain distance she needs to stand away from this forest tile to be safe. But just in case things do go wrong (like Perceval arranging his allies so Larum can't talk to him), Melady is here as a bodyguard. Not only will she be able to swoop in and grab her if she can't talk to him for whatever reason, she'll also be able to lure this Wyvern Rider over to his death. She can guard the lives of both Guinvere and Larum!

These wyverns have gotten pretty scary! That's more strength than the boss has. Although in a chapter's time I might get my own Wyvern Rider that starts with capped strength... I say might, because HM bonuses are variable and Zeiss might end up with a paltry base 19 strength.

I need to speed Lilina over to the right side of the map as soon as possible to recruit the third warm body who's joining this map. There is a lot of empty space here, but all the high movement mounted units will soon fill it up.

Klein can visit these villages much more efficiently than Raigh could, he's got one more point of movement! Plus his face is way less punchable. Is this villager going to give me a Rescue staff? That would be very good for rescuing people.

Oh, she wants me to rescue Fae in the spiritual sense. Someone might have to read this bible to her because I don't think she can read herself.

Good, the Cavaliers haven't killed Larum! You would think "don't put the unit where the red tiles are" would be an easy task, but I have messed this up before. Although thankfully never in an ironman playthrough...

This guy however has made a horrible mistake from which he will never recover. This wyvern would have immediately tried to kill Perceval's escort the moment they turned green, so it's good that he dies now.

I don't actually know if the AI could be weird and put Perceval somewhere where Larum couldn't reach him, but I was a little worried. She does have the Boots so she probably could have walked around any blockade that his lackies formed...

I don't think that's a good lie Larum, you don't look like Douglas or his manor! Perceval's not gonna fall for that.

Prince Myrddin (not to be confused with Prince Myrmidon, the red haired gambling guy from FE8) is the bard that would have joined if I had gone with the B route in the Western Isles instead. So Perceval's just going to have to trust that Larum hasn't killed him to give her a monopoly in the field of making people move twice per turn.

Lance who? Perceval's already good without his Hard mode bonuses, but with them... Sure Lance is faster, but look at all his other stats! 50 HP, 15 luck, 16 defense, 12 res... Perceval's bulky enough to be a one man army.

HP: 75%
STR: 30%
SKL: 25%
SPD: 35%
LCK: 20%
DEF: 20%
RES: 10%

Affinity: Dark (Accuracy, Avoid, Critical, Critical Evade)
Support Partners: Klein, Cecilia, Saul, Elffin, Douglas, Larum

If only Cecilia showed up with these bases! Perceval is probably the most blessed out of every recruitable enemy in this game. His bases were already good before, but these astronomical stats completely erase the issues his poor growths might get him. He could never gain a single stat and still perform better than most of your army in the final chapters. His weapon ranks are great too, he could even wield Armads if you gave him an axe and threw him into a crowd to raise his rank a little. And he'd do that much better than your other Paladins, because even his CON is higher... I don't have anything insightful to say about how good he is, he's just good.

My Rating: 10/10. Will make you bench whichever of the Christmas Cavs you didn't promote back in Chapter 8.

Like Klein and Tate he's brought some friends along, and of course those friends are the condition for getting a Knight's Crest as a reward post seize. Besides that one wyvern there's not much danger to their health so long as you advance through the map at a decent pace. They do have high movement, but they're also stuck a fair distance behind the rest of your army and all of the enemies.

So these Archers have clearly been placed her to stop me from doing the thing I'm doing... But what if I did it anyway? This Longbow barely scratches Melady. If she can just take out the other Sniper...

It's tempting, but that small chance of a miss she has might spell the end for her. The Sniper won't kill her, but he sure will chunk a good amount of her health off.

But maybe that's not a problem if none of the other enemies present can do any amount of meaningful damage to her? Hmm. Hmm...

gently caress it. You built your home in the mountains, that's where dragons lie! Melady shall send your body back to the earth where it belongs.

Maybe she can kill the boss before the rest of my army make their away up here too. Guinvere needs a royal castle and theirs is decidedly non wyvern proof.

Larum has tiny baby legs and cannot reach the rest of my army without help. Her previous escort fled to satisfy her bloodlust, so Perceval can prove his loyalty by bringing me my most useful ally unharmed.

These Valkyries aren't so bad if you're faster than the speed of sound! It sure is a good thing Lance turned out the way he did. I guess in another playthrough you might have Rutger or maybe Fir to deal with these instead. They are rather evasive though.

Lilina is not that fast but she can get a little faster. I hate having to use these on the map, I keep forgetting I have them in the first place. This should put her at 16 speed if I remember correctly, which is unfortunately just enough to still get doubled by Valkyries assuming they're not losing AS from their tomes.

I feel as if I may have been just a little lucky with Melady's growths. She's even managed to match Perceval's 50 HP 2 levels earlier than him. I can't wait to sic this monster on Narcian.

Melady's become enough of a threat that the other Valkyrie is running to fight her instead of my units approaching from the east. That's probably for the best, even if Melady can't handle them she can at least distract them by flying around to make them chase her.

Well it's doable, but I might want Elen healing her with Physic from over the mountain. She's going to end up like one of those video game bosses that are invincible until you destroy their remotely stored source of power, except Melady's power of invincibiliy comes from a nun praying really hard miles away.

This group of enemies is much less scary without a Valkyrie to back them up. Lance could probably handle the group on his own...

Look, she's fast enough to double now! Now she's twice as useful.

There's the third recruit I was talking about. Those sure are a lot of stitches. Perhaps he's a Frankenstein patchwork of all the Berserkers I've killed already.

It's true, visiting a village is basically the same as looting it. They even become unvisitable after a blue unit enters them, who's to say we don't kill everyone inside?

Garret's Brigand friends are baddies so they won't flip sides when he does. It's totally okay to kill them. Ratman won't give out any Bandit Seals as thanks for sparing his life, so Edelgard will never be able to pass her Brigand exam in this world.

I hope Lance isn't feeling emasculated by Perceval's arrival, because he's still good! Although he is earning like 3 EXP per kill. Maybe I should give them to someone of a lower level... Like Perceval.

Oh no, magic! Melady's one weakness. Why can't her mount breathe fire right back?

I don't know if Garret (or just Berserkers in general) can smash villages, but this eastern village does make recruiting or killing Garret a high priority. He starts off pretty close already...

There's really not been much to comment on this map, but I may have encountered my first hurdle: this group of baddies might not die as easily as I had thought. There's some scary guys among them, like a merc with a Killing Edge...

Is Sin still good? I feel like he never gets much per level. At least his luck is decently high.

Klein and Igrene can thin out some of the enemies with chip damage, although it looks more like they're holding an empty bow and shrugging. Igrene's pallete doesn't much look her portrait.

It was at this point I realised I had not been prioritising my kills particularly well. All of the scary enemies are still alive, and my best units have already taken their actions. I don't want this guy to live to see his next turn!

Lot's not doing well in the accuracy department, even with the Swordslayer Merlinus traded him. There's limited places to stand next to this guy to attack him, how do I solve this?

Elen is the only person who can kill this Sniper reliably, but she has to stand in danger range to kill him without blocking off all the tiles from which I could attack the Mercenary. It's fine, she has a healer in reserve...

Now I can take him out. Ironically I wouldn't have had to worry about any of this had I just sent Lance ahead on his own with no squishier allies to be in danger of the enemies he doesn't kill.

Unfortunately I once again cannot sell my stuff because Merlinus put himself in harms way to give Lot a Swordslayer he didn't even need. I am really bad with my money, I keep losing my wallet!

Otherwise the only damage suffered from the enemies I didn't kill is Klein getting a sword to the face. Good thing he wasn't wearing a helmet, otherwise that sword would have hurt him more!

Looks like Larum has finally caught up. She and her trusty steed would have been useful a turn ago. Why can't she dance when she's on a horse?

Random stranger, please don't smash this village! Lilina just has to trust that you have a face behind that viking helmet and that your life therefore has value.

It's the same reason as you Lilina, he wants the loot! As he said before, he has to hurry up or else you'll get there first.

It's weird that there only ever seems to be one character per Fire Emblem game who speaks with any sort of affect.

He might share his name with a man from another series with a machine gun for an arm, but sadly Garret might be one of the most forgettable characters in this game. I've never used him, and I don't know what other people think of him, so I may as well just random.org a rating for him.

HP: 70%
STR: 45%
SKL: 25%
SPD: 25%
LCK: 15%
DEF: 15%
RES: 5%

Affinity: Wind (Attack, Accuracy, Critical, Critical Evade)
Support Partners: Lilina, Geese, Larum, Cath, Gonzales

HM bonuses can make an already good unit amazing, but they never seem to make a mediocre unit that much better. As fun a class as Berserker is, Garret probably wishes he had something else - he doesn't have a mount to get him across the map faster, and he's stuck with one of the worse if not the worst weapon type in the game. At least he has high skill and luck compared to your other axe guys! Unfortunately he's also very slow, and his CON is fairly mediocre as far as axe guys go too. He's never going to double anything ever, and he's still going to be inaccurate on top of that. I imagine he's not too dissimilar to a trained Ward... He's probably decent filler if you give him a Killer Axe and stick him on mountains to fight wyverns, a >60% crit rate certainly wouldn't be something to sniff at. He just wishes he had better stats to back up that otherwise amazing HP and strength.

But that's all just speculatory. Who knows how good he is! I have like 10 axes spare, maybe he can replace Klein as filler. But for now I'll let random.org decide...

My Rating: random.org says... 9? No way that's true, I'll half it and round it down to 4/10.

Garret has mended his ways, and that means he's going to loot this house without smashing it to pieces. He might want to live in there after the war!

Hammerene is a 3 (or 5? it changes per game...) use staff that repairs a single weapon back to full durability. You still have to use it on someone else though, you can't repair weapons you're currently holding. It's good for getting more uses out of rare items like the Warp staff, or your divine weapons... But real tacticians know the true use of Hammerene: sitting in your convoy untouched because what if you need to repair those limited use weapons (that you aren't using) later???

Reinforcements are going to come from these forts soonish. I don't feel like fighting them and basically everyone is dead, so I'll just cover them up on my way to the seize point.

There's nothing I want or need from this shop, it's swords I'm after. Merlinus is KO'd and there's no armoury in this map so I can't sell or buy anything... Surely someone could sharpen a Mend staff and use it as a shiv?

Lilina and Elen have traded roles, the former heals people and the later sends them to heaven. I want 30 magic Warp Lilina and Aureola Elen, so this is just how it's going to have to be for a while! Neither one is at all bad at what they're currently doing.

Nice. Maybe I should find a support partner for Larum? I think she has quite a few...

There go the green units! Goodbye my friends. Can't you stick around with Perceval and help me? Or maybe they know how little I'll value their lives as soon as I have my reward from them...

They got the exact same level! I think Cecilia was Lilina's tutor... I wish she would gain magic though, that's supposed to be her entire gimmick.

I'm going to grind out supports for a few turns at the end of this map, but I would like a few turns of this throne being empty to get the horse stink out of it.

I attack you because you are soft and squishy and full of EXP. Although I guess this probably should have gone to someone else...

Melady is definitely going to have the left side of her stat screen capped out before she hits level 20. FE6 might be the most difficult of the GBA games, but it does also give you the best characters...

Nothing to do but stand in all the spaces reinforcements could come from and grind out supports. I could have had Larum stand next to Perceval and build support, but that didn't occur to me at the time. It also would have lowered the number of support points every other pair could get, because this game has that dumb per chapter limit for some reason.

May as well have Larum do something useful if she's not making friends! My original plan was to do this until she reached level 20 but I do not have it in me to hit end turn that many times in a row.

Elen has some concerns, like "stop killing all the people before I can reach them". She's evil now, she thirsts for blood!

This pairing gets Accuracy + 5, Critical +5, and Critical Evade +5 from supporting one another. That's not a lot of stats, Wind/Dark is not a particularly great combination... Unforutnately Elen's not really got a lot of partners to choose from.

Okay that's it, I am tired of this. Larum can reach level 20 some other time. I hope Fae hasn't wandered off in those many turns I spent sat around not doing anything!

Well, I'm afriad there's nothing for it. Conscripting this toddler into our army is simply the morally correct thing to do. Army recruiters are always selling enlisting as a chance to see the world!

Hang on, I'm pretty sure you lot ran off! I don't even want this Knight's Crest, only Bors and Wendy can use it now and they're both like level 1. I'll just sell it so some lucky stranger can buy their own knighthood.

It's Xavier > Hannibal > Douglas. And then maybe Wallace after that if I kept going. I'd forgotten all about Tauroneo to be honest, but I do remember him being a little tricky.

It's kind of weird that Generals are such pains in the rear end to recruit in so many games, especially given that they're also not exactly GOOD units either.
