that's an insane D that's head and shoulders above every other D in the league. Johnson and Manson to round it out is crazy, too. They're good complementary players.

It's entirely possible Erik Johnson retires in the next couple of weeks. He wanted to retire last year and Sakic had to convince him to go one more. He may call it quits now that he has a Cup, though he'd still be very useful if he sticks around.

Me too. Desperate miss it already. This was probably the season where I watched the least regular season hockey. I picked up watching in 2009 with my college roommate and friend but mentally, after the Avs collapses in the playoffs post-rebuild (and being a fan of another team who collapses a lot in another spot) so many years in a row I needed a bit of a break from the constant stress and just didn't watch as much in general. Still followed and caught highlights but.... didn't force myself to stay awake on the east coast for every game. It let me enter the playoffs with a pretty zen feeling, which of course waned very quickly, but I feel like now that the Avs won a cup I'll be able to enjoy the regular season again next year without stressing.

Idk I'm broke brained and care too much about sports.

You should have thought ahead like me and recorded all of the Avs playoff games. That way you could just watch them over and over until the next season starts :science:

There's a good possibility I would have gotten game 7 tickets from my work, if Lightning had won game 6. But I'm real happy they didn't, because if they did, Avs would be super tense and nervous and Lightning would prob have won game 7 as well, which would not have been cool.

the Rangers have a very promising D and a Norris winner by Makar is better than Fox, Toews is better than Lindgren by a lot, Byram is better than Miller by a lot. Trouba and Girard are probably a wash at this point. Johnson/Manson are leagues better than Schneider/Braun. Jack Johnson, and I can't believe I'm saying this, is better than Nemeth.

Tampa's D is great, but again, Makar/Toews/Byram is very clearly better than Hedman/McDonagh/Sergachev.

Add to that MacKinnon/Ratanen/etc, and I think they're like the Wings/Hawks teams around twelve years ago, where they're so talented that they are a threat every year even with league average goaltending. tbh I wouldn't be surprised to see Tampa in there again for a rematch, too.

In the middle of the WCF, when everyone was clowning on the Avs for "not knowing how to play defense", I said in this thread that Makar/Toews/Byram/Manson was probably the best top 4 d pairing in the league (when Girard gets back, if he's not traded, I'm betting he ends up on the 3rd d pairing with EJ). I don't think anyone believed me (except probably other Avs fans) at the time, but it feels nice that other people are starting to think the same way :shobon:

Dude, you were going on about how Colorado would barely have a shot against the Lightning or Rangers when that series was still going on. Enjoy the win, but you're being very revisionist about your confidence in the team and everyone else's supposed lack of confidence in the D. People questioned Kuemper and depth if they had to play JMFJ due to injury. The strength of the top 4 wasn't exactly in question.

No? Lots of people said Colorado played terrible defense. I said that Colorado's defense was really good, but Kuemper made them look bad by giving up a lot of terrible goals.

Go back and look at my post history if you want, nothing I just said was revisionist at all. Yeah, at the time I said I didn't like our chances against the Lightning or Rangers, but I said it specifically because Kuemper was playing so bad. Not because of our defense. All anyone ever said is that Jack Mother loving Johnson sucks at defense everything and if they manage to not win the Cup he and ol' One-Eye will be the reasons why.

There are a lot of bad opinions in these threads, many of the mine. But nobody in earnest looked at one, if not the, Stanley Cup favorites and said they have terrible defense.

Your team was not the underdog, you should be gloating that your team was the best and proved it was the best. This nobody believed in my teams defense victim complex is very strange on a team with Cale Makar...

I don't think they are Edmonton bad, but I do think Colorado mostly plays defense by being really good offensively. The times they tried to sit on a lead and defend it, things tended to go very poorly (see Game 5 against the Blues). Whereas they could stifle other teams offense by keeping up their own offensive pressure (see Game 6 of the Finals which ended with Makar pinning the puck in the corner in the offensive zone).

Guys like Makar, Byram and Girard aren't really great defensively, but they move the puck out of the zone quickly with tape-to-tape passes, or can skate it out, and you absolutely have to worry about them in transition.

They play really good defense in the neutral zone and are really good at possession of the puck. So any “deficiencies” in the d zone are less of a problem. They’re not going to be great against teams that are really good at cycling behind the net and down low, but they are good at disrupting passing lanes and turning it up ice quickly in transition.

I know that doesn’t translate great as pure great defense, but at the end of the day it’s about keeping more pucks out of your net than you put in the other. And against Tampa they managed to stifle their offense in a couple games including game 6. So, not bad at D, just looks different than 10 years ago.

that’s really bad, crazy that he kept going! he was also apparently seeing an ocular specialist three times a day throughout the playoffs because it wasn’t working correctly.

I hope he does get re-signed, he’s the best option the Avs have and I think (hope) maybe the weak eye-injury induced postseason leads to a contract everyone can be happy with. maybe 4x4.5? that was his cap hit on his last contract and isn’t onerous enough to cripple on that term
