What's Fire Emblem?

If you are unaware, it's a long running series of strategy RPGs in which your units can die forever or live to date one another. Well, the dating mostly came later.

Expect dragons, anime, swords with fancy names, a whole lot of warfare, and anime.

There's a ton of other LPs of the other games on the archives, read 'em, they're good. That being said, while I'll lightly explain basic FE stuff, I'll only go in depth on the mechanics unique to this game. Some of those have fantastic tutorials.

For specifically Fates content:
Birthright: Here, here, and here.
Conquest: Here and here.

What's Fates/Revelations

The 14th mainline game in the series, Fates is a 3 pack of games (Birthright, Conquest, and Revelations) all telling different stories of the war between Not-Japan and Not-Europe. The story and plot of these are generally regarded as a mess, and with Revelations being the "true route", it's also a mega mess.

Expect nonsense plot beats, is what I'm saying.

Hell, maybe we can even undergo the fool's errand of trying to fix this plot spaghetti on the side. Regardless, I'm here to have fun, so I'm not really going to wander the LP territory of doing this out of spite. ...And the result of that is that I gave up on trying to present potential remedies for the game's story not long after the route split. It's a mess, and doesn't know if wants to be YA novel or a political drama. Either would be fine, it just needs to pick one.

Besides, there is something on the table that'll hopefully enhance the experience!

And what's that?

As requested by some folks, this isn't any ordinary playthrough of Revelations, this is a playthrough with the Unofficial Gay Fates Patch, (an expansion of the Expanded Same-Sex Marriage Patch,) which adds a massive 367* supports to the game, allowing for nearly maximum gay romance in a game that only had a some originally. And the writing is done by folks who aren't overworked writers with little investment.

How good are these new supports? I have no idea, we'll have to see.

*(Admittedly, a sizable amount of these are mildly tweaked versions of other ones, but are done so for compatibility's sake.)

I've also never actually played an FE:Fates game before, only seen the occasional LP. I also don't really know much about Revelations. so, uh... this'll be interesting. I've played a number of other Fire Emblems on higher difficulties, so while I don't really know this game's specifics too well, I should be able to manage.

I'm also going to let the thread decide who I use for missions and who we pair together, because that's too good an opportunity to pass up, and if anything I love having the thread vote on stuff.

wait aren't you running 2 lps already, what the heck

I am. In practice, this would be a terrible idea, but I've had an itch to LP a strategy game recently, and I've already ripped and converted the entire game's script to make it easily pasted into an update. You know, aside from the fact this was supposed to be a simple coding exercise that ballooned into far more many hours of coding than I expected.

Don't believe me? Here's all the text for the prologue.

...So it shouldn't be too hard on me. The update schedule for this will also be "whenever", and my other two LPs still get priority should anything come up.

Edit: If you see this and wondering where my other LPs are, I'm working on it, don't worry

SPOILER RULES:
As previously mentioned, I'm going into this partially unaware of the many nonsense facets of this game's storyline, but not really the other two. I barely remember the story of the other two but anyways-

Spoilers for Birthright & Conquest are fine. Just don't go overboard, there may be some readers who haven't seen those yet.
Spoilers for Revelations, I'd prefer if you keep under black bars if you must discuss it.
Spoilers for Same-Sex Marriage Patch, you're free to discuss the supports in general terms, but keep the big details under black bars

I'm pretty sure you can all handle that, I'm not going to get strict about it. The usual forum rules apply, don't be a weirdo and just be chill.

Update Zero: Create a Corndog:

Before we can start the game, I need a Cornelius to play. There's a lot of options, but I'll try to break it up as best I can. Alternatively, you can give me the values from here.

First up, appearance. We can't do anything about Cornshuck's metal bodysuit and bare feet at the moment.

Are we Lord or Lady?

Are we tall or small?

Then the many hairstyles, so many in fact that I'll just give the scales the game uses and roll a die on the result if I have to.

For Lord Cornwall:
Stylish to Simple, or somewhere between?

and

Wild to Slick, or somewhere between?

For Lady Corndog:
Long to Short or somewhere between?

and

Cute to Wild or somewhere between?

Next up, [/b]hair accessories![/b] Only Lady Kernel gets these.

They are: None, Silver Clip, Butterfly, Black or White Ribbon, and White Rose.

To round out the hair is hair color. Just name a color and I can probably find it here.

Following this, our face! Just like the hair, I'll give the scales the game uses.

Caring to Stern, or in between?

and

Mature to Boy/Girlish, or in between?

Facial details! Scars, beauty marks, face tattoos, bandages, or eyepatch? We only get one, unfortunately.

(There's also voice, but I'm going to be the only one hearing that, so it's not included.)

We'll also need a name, so that I can stop referring to them in variations of corn based joke names.

======FASHION OVER=============

Our character's look has no bearing on their mechanical performance, but what does is their Boon, Bane, and Talent.

The former two modify our base stats and stat growths, while the latter gives us a class we can optionally go into later.

For the Boon and Bane, you can't pick two of the same type, so I'll just order them.

Boons: Strong, Clever, Deft, Quick, Lucky, Sturdy, Calm

and

Bane: Weak, Dull, Clumsy, Slow, Unlucky, Fragile, Excitable

------------------------------------------------------------
And for the talent classes, pick one:

Melee:
Fighter, Oni Savage (Axes,Clubs)
Knight, Spear Fighter (Spears,Naginatas)
Mercenary Samurai (Swords,Katanas)

Melee Mounted:
Cavalier, Sky Knight, Wyvern Rider

Bows & Ranged:
Outlaw, Apothecary, Ninja

Magic Classes:
Diviner, Monk, Priestess/Shrine Maiden, Dark Mage, Troubadour
------------------------------------------------------------

And here's a thing you can copy/paste to make your vote easier. Or just give me the values from here, I don't mind. You can even just vote for Corndog here if you're so inclined.

I'm agreed on this being pretty much the appearance and name, Corndog supremacy. Quick boon, Excitable bane, Wyvern Rider talent, 6/9 birthday.

(I won't go on about compatible mods I also dig since you don't actually know too much going in, but if you were gonna pick any, I'd say it'd be a good idea to grab the Flora Early Join patch. The original creator of Gay Fates was a big fan and as such Flora has a full support chain with nearly every non-child unit when she only has, like, 2 or 3 in the base game and without the patch doesn't join until you get a certain structure in My Castle up to level 3, same as in Conquest.)

It's not running from them if I'm not putting any of them down

But for real, I can handle this. I've already got every single portrait and all of the dialogue in the entire game formatted and easy-ish to search for, so the workload per update is a lot lighter than what I usually work with.

I was going to mention them as they arrived, but I did install a few of the other compatible mods: Flora Early Join, Early Felicia/Jakob, and Felicia/Jakob Swap.

I reasoned we're here for support chains, I knew they joined quite a bit later, so I decided I might as well put them online as early as possible.

This seems like the way to go, yeah

Incidentally, sorry if this is rude to ask, but do you have any plans of sharing the full converted script and/or the tools to make it at some point? It sounds like it'd be quite the useful resource!

Yeah, I can release it at some point, although presently the code is a barely documented mess and a number of filenames aren't translated (most of which are supports easy to tell who it is immediately). Said tools are just seven different ramshackle Python scripts alongside a modded version of Paragon that barfs some portrait parameters at me, and FEAT. Also two files I borrowed from Paragon and modified a bit to catch some stuff. The scripts would definitely have to wait for me to clean them all up first.

The end result is that I do have all 1305 script files (Base game and Gay Fates combined, and almost twice that in LP portraits) formatted as such:
code:
MID_A001_OP1_1:
Flora-Happy: Time to wake up, Lord/Lady Corrin!

MID_A001_OP1_1_1:
Felicia-Impatient: Hey, wake up, Lord/Lady Corrin! Up and at 'em!

MID_A001_OP1_2_PCM1:
Corrin-Impatient: Hrmmm... What are you talking about? It's still dark outside.
Gunter-Happy: Listen well, Prince/Princess. It may be dark, but it is indeed morning. You have practice today.
When just the first line of that normally looks like:

==============================
MID_A001_OP1_1: $a$t1$Wmフローラ|3$w0|$Wsフローラ|$Wa$E笑,|$SvpVOICE_FLORA_EVT_08|Time to wake up, $GLord,Lady| $Nu!$k
============================

Those I could give out, but it's not as if I've manually checked every one of the 1305 files by eye. My catches in the scripts don't pick up on missing anything anymore though, so I'm assuming it's all correct for the most part. I wasn't able to keep the sound/music data, but some more work on the scripts could retain that, although most music triggers seem to be done outside of dialogue scripting.

Also, there's a decent number of script errors or just general complications in both sets of scripts I had to program around, especially regarding Azura for some reason. I guess I can talk those when we actually get to them in the game.

this pit is full of stat boosters
Oh no, somebody is actually doing this. I'm glad I won't have to resist the urge to LP this myself any more... This is definitely going to be an experience if it's your first Fates playthrough. I'd definitely recommned playing on Normal, Rev isn't the hardest route but it does have really inflated enemy defenses on higher difficulties that can make training people a huge pain!

It seems like the vote's already decided but definitely go girl, otherwise the only F/F pairing you can do that will result in a child will be Azura's. I vote +Spd -Skl Archer talent, it's good for pretty much all class choices and the two characters I would be thinking about marrying if I did this both want Quick Draw, it's a super useful skill. Corndog's design is amazing but I vote the same design with blue hair named Conic (the hedgehog).

I'm trying to detox from the internet a little so I don't know if I'll be commenting all that much, but I'll be watching all the same. Have fun, and remeber: Don't ask, don't tell! (about Valla, because you'll vanish)

Maybe I missed you mentioning it, but do you have a way to unlock paralogues? I personally use a patch that unlocks them all immediately, which is a bit annoying when you select maps but beats digging into the game code every time I unlock an S support.

Good to know, I'll stick to Normal! I was leaning towards it already, but I was getting ideas about going for Hard. You never know with these games, sometimes Hard is just a mild challenge and other times it's Lunatic by a different name.

I figured out that little sticking point with the pairings on my own, but I figured I'd leave it to the thread anyways. I guess Gay Awakening has the opposite problem

Apologies! I was going to ask if anyone was planning on doing it, (especially since it's been a while since the LP request was made,) but I honestly didn't really know where to ask and just ran with it in the spur of the moment. If you had anything in particular you wanted to show off when the time comes, I can do that or you can make your own posts between updates, I don't mind.

Yeah, I didn't mention it either, but I do have this one which is supposed to modify the code to allow same-sex marriages to unlock them normally. If it doesn't end up working when we get there, I'll have to do the hex code hacking version I guess.

-----------------------------

As for the votes, it seems like there's a general consensus on short, wild pink hair and black eyepatch and ribbon but with the Quick, Excitable, Wyvern Rider combat set. I guess we're visually some alternate universe Minerva, which is fine, because Minerva's been the true MVP on a lot of my Awakening runs.

Technically, the Corndog look is under short and wild, but it's not that short? I can't really make up my mind what to do here, so we'll do this as our final deciding vote just in case:

Pick 1 of these 4:

Option A

Option B

Option C

Option D

I mean this doesn't really matter that much, but I'm working on the update for RFF today so no harm in asking.

Voting closes for the next real update tomorrow! It's mostly story, so it shouldn't take me much time to get it out.

Update 1: Family Matters (Ties that Bind)

Music: Title Screen

(I'll be providing music links whenever I can locate them, although I can't always guarantee I'll have the "proper" title for them. This a slow, distant piano solo of the game's main theme.)

Here's our title screen! Behind said title a silver pendant glowing blue slowly drifts down through water, it's chain apparently having been broken. Will this be relevant later? Maybe, I don't know!

To a new game we go!

I could technically skip all the introductory stuff, but we might as well go through it if at the very least to distribute our experience gains.

Fates offers three difficulties, Normal, Hard, and Lunatic. As this is my first time with this game, I reason it's best to just do Normal (and have been advised as such). The series has always had somewhat inconsistent balance/naming in these- one game's Hard is sometimes another's Lunatic.

Hard beefs up some enemy stats, and may add reinforcements to maps that didn't have them

Lunatic is if you'd like the game to be one giant luck influenced puzzle game. Also if you like pain.

Next is the game mode. One oFire Emblem's original calls to fame was the permadeath of units, so I'm going to pick Classic for the tighter strategy, even if I will reset if anyone dies- it wouldn't do to lose anyone in a LP pretty much about character supports.

For reference though, Phoenix only shows up as a choice on Normal, and it makes it to where your characters immediately come back to life the turn after they die. It's basically story mode.

Casual lets you play the game a bit more like chess, allowing you to sacrifice units knowing they'll come back in the next battle.

Following this, we create get to design the main character. After some thread voting, we came to this:

Meet Corndog (a joke on the default name of Corrin), the protagonist of our tale. With an eternally tired/uninterested expression, bright pink intentionally styled bedhead of the most anime proportions, and a fancy black ribbon, she's ready to take on the world in her metal bodysuit. Oh, and that's an eyepatch under where all that hair is hanging down in the front.

Born on the 6th month, 9th day (nice), she's Quick, Excitable, and has an affinity with dragons. This correlates to her having better Speed, but low Resistance, and the ability to later reclass into a Wyvern Rider.

Given the Wyvern Rider's typical nature to be weak to magic anyways, it shouldn't make too much of a difference on how we might play that out.

If you're wondering, Corndog's look won't be too out of place at times, to be honest.

On with the game!

Prologue: Ties That Bind

Each of the early title cards will have cherry blossoms falling on one side and black roses on the other, but this'll eventually change.

Audio: Ties That Bind

(The best I've got here is the JP audio ripped straight from the cutscene? Oh well.)

We open to cutscene of a blue-haired person in white standing at a small lake.

I actually have to transcribe these.

UNKNOWN: You are the ocean's gray waves, destined to seek life beyond the shore, just out of reach...

She cuts into singing as the water begins to ripple; this is the first we hear of the ever-infamous "Ocean's Grey Waves", (technically titled "Lost In Thoughts All Alone".)

It's not a badly done song, it's just overplayed. They were really proud of this song and theme, you see.

And so she continues to sing even as she's walked shoulder deep into the lake. That dress has to be just ruined now.

UNKNOWN: Yet the waters ever change, flowing like time ♪ The path is yours to climb...

how are you singing underwater

I guess it must be psychic, she's not even moving her mouth now.

And so she drifts on by into a bright light, passing various floating ruins in the process.

well ok bye then

We fade into view of Angry Blonde Cavalier at sunset, as the music takes a far more dramatic turn.

And with the wave of his hand, he sends a massive army of spearmen out to meet an enemy army on the horizon.

We cut to Angry Red Samurai Man charging in and deleting not one...

hold on gotta backflip off some people first

...five spearmen with a lightning katana. They were generic units, they probably had it coming.

RYOMA: Nohrian general! You face the high prince of Hoshido, Ryoma! I challenge you to single combat!

NOHRIAN GENERAL: I will accept your challenge, "high prince."

XANDER: But I'm no general. I am crown prince Xander of Nohr!

Oh hey, he's got a magic sword too! It's probably not evil, what with that dark miasma coming off of it.

So he rears up on his steed, jumps off the cliffside, and wipes two generics in the process. Seriously, these two guys somehow made it this far behind the lines, they deserve a medal.

Oh, make that three generics. It's a bad time to not be a named NPC.

They leap in the air at one another, their blades almost about to clash...!

And then we fade to white to black.

HINOKA: Come on, Corndog! We've got work to do!

We then cut to Corndog with a lady on a flying horse at her side, facing off against some bandit guy in an open plain.

If you're wondering why it's sorta pixelated, it's because this is at native resolution. I'd upscale it, but then the shaders get really weird and the lighting breaks.

He then runs forth and hits our hero!

So she swings back and completely whiffs. Maybe the frontflip was a bit much.

Oh come on, how are we getting doubled by an axe user?

Before Corndog bites it, Hinoka shoves her out of the way, blocking the hit... with her horse?

Thanks, whoever you are!

HINOKA: Corndog, what's the matter with you? You seem distracted...

HINOKA: If you're worried, don't be. All your siblings are here with you. The Nohrians don't stand a chance!

Oh, so you're our sister. I guess the hair kinda matches. Kiiinda.

Sorry about that, we were hallucinating about some lady singing while underwater.

We'll meet all these people in detail later, but for now I'll just handwave it. You're not supposed to know who any of these characters are yet anyways.

Alright, just rout the enemy is it? Easy enough.

Music: Woleb Tsap

(Music! If you're wondering what's with the weird name, it's because it's in reverse as this is a later song played backwards. Still strangely chill though.)

And so the game begins! Sort of. If it's not obvious, we're in tutorial land. It's also a battlefield.

Well, we got a guy to poke with a sword, so let's get to it.

HINOKA: Ready to attack?

Yeah this guy is dead.

...Wait, 100% hit? How did we miss earlier? :???:

Music: Woleb Tsap (Flow)

(Something the later FE games started doing is making hyped up versions of map themes to shift into during battle. It's a neat effect.)

So Corndog and the fighter trade blows and she wins.

CORNDOG: I did it!

Something you may notice is that her animations are incredibly flashy. The animators got a lot better after Awakening, and it shows- that or Corndog is trying to match Ryoma's performance in the cutscene.

Ah, and the art team also know how to model feet now, even if they are still tiny.

Oh, right, did I mention that Corndog is barefoot? Because she is. I guess metal bodysuits just don't come with shoes.

Well, that was our turn over. Our siblings are just green units right now.

RYOMA: I demand to know why you Nohrian dogs are invading Hoshido!

RYOMA: Was that cowardly attack on my people your doing as well, princelin?

XANDER: ...I have nothing to say to you. Surrender now.

XANDER: If you refuse...you die here.

Oh yeah, these two are still fighting.

Ryoma almost gets one-shot on a 55% chance to hit here. He's not doing so great.

RYOMA: You die... NOW!

He could just do an Astra proc and do a 5 hit combo, that works too.

Our attention is drawn to the upper left of the map, where some enemy units start to talk.

ELISE: Oh, no! The bridge collapsed! How can we help our sister now?

CAMILLA: Not to worry, Elise. This royal blood in our veins is still good for something!

LEO: Have you spotted a Dragon Vein, Camilla?

CAMILLA: You know me too well, dear little brother!

Yeah, I don't know about you two, but she's a flying unit, this isn't a problem for her.

And so she, some sort of wyvern rider flies on over to this spot and...

A large image of a bird-dragon-thing flashes up...

And she launches a massive fireball at the river nearby, evaporating all the water. :stare:

ELISE: Yaaay, it worked! The river dried up!

CAMILLA: I would never let you down, darling. Now, everyone follow me.

LEO: Elise, you're not ready for the front lines. Stay back. Camilla and I will take care of the Hoshidans.

Yay, ecological destruction!

HINOKA: The Nohrian army used a Dragon Vein to dry up the river!

HINOKA: But I thought only royals held that power...

TAKUMI: Yeah, which means there must be some real big shots over there.

HINOKA: Stay focused, Corndog. The Nohrians brought their heavy hitters this time.

Oh dear, it's not just named units, it's lords. Those are always incredibly overpowered!

The lords move up-

hey wait, he told you to stay back!

And so do some people in the big pile down to the south! These people all have names and portraits, but like the others we'll meet them later. This is already going longer than I thought it would.

Some fighting goes on, and the ones presumably on our side are losing.

C'mon low-res background soldiers, get in there! Don't just stand around!

HANS: Listen up, cannon fodder! We have a direct order from King Garon. He says kill 'em all!

And then this guy shows up on the horizon with a bunch of spearmen. Yeah, the situation's going sour fast.

HINOKA: Dammit, their reinforcements have arrived! I'll go scout out how many there are.

I'll go scout out how many there are. Takumi, Sakura, stay with Corndog.

TAKUMI: Understood.

SAKURA: Y-yes. Good idea.

And so she flies off a bit to the north.

TAKUMI: Hang in there, Corndog.

TAKUMI: The Nohrian royals are no pushovers...We'll have to work together to beat them.

TAKUMI: As the eldest, I guess you're in charge. Tell me what to do and I'll do it.

Hey, that's helpful, we get another unit! He's quite agreeable, I hope he stays this way. We're gonna need reliable allies.

...We're probably gonna need more than one at this rate though.

SAKURA: Are you hurt, Corndog?! Here, let me heal your wounds!

And so she does! Interestingly, she can heal at 2 range- what kind of advanced healing staff is this?!

Corndog does a little spin and curtsy in reply.

CORNDOG: Thank you!

YUKIMURA: Comrades! Do not let them cross this line. We must defend Hoshido!

More green units! We might not lose this battle after all!

SAKURA: Oh n-no! An enemy!

TAKUMI: It's an ambush! Sakura, stay back. You aren't equipped to fight.

HINOKA: Takumi! Corndog! I'm counting on you two. Work together to defeat that soldier!

Seriously, how'd this guy get back here? Who's got the warp staff?

TAKUMI: Listen, here's how we're gonna do this!

TAKUMI: With my bow, I can shoot this one from here. I'll soften him up, and then you can jump in and finish him off. Got it?

Also our brother explains to us the concept of how to feed experience to a unit. He's level 5 and Corndog's only level 1, so I guess it comes with the territory.

And so they team up and take this surprise spearman out.

Stage complete? Already?

Eh, I didn't feel like fighting all those other red units anyways, so sure.

HINOKA: Corndog, Takumi, good work fighting off that ambush.

SAKURA: You were amazing, Corndog.

TAKUMI: That went well. Probably because SOMEONE gave you good advice. ...And you're welcome, by the way.

HINOKA: No time to talk! Let's see how Ryoma's doing.

ok whatever brother

We should probably go save the red samurai man, he's nearly dead last time I checked and this isn't Phoenix mode!

HINOKA: Ryoma, are you all right?

RYOMA: I'll be fine. I'm glad to see you're all safe. Enemy reinforcements are headed this way.I want you to get rid of them.

RYOMA: Corndog, I'm counting on you to keep Hinoka and the others safe.

I mean, okay, but we're still level 1. I don't know what you expect us to do.

XANDER: Corndog! Thank heavens we found you, and that you're alive and well.

XANDER: Quickly, come join us! Your family has come to take you home where you belong.

RYOMA: Quiet, Nohrian filth! Corndog is my sister and a princess of Hoshido!

XANDER: On the contrary. Corndog is MY sister and a princess of Nohr!

Huh? But the... what? :raise:

Well, this is sudden. I didn't know we had such a complex family tree.

CAMILLA: Corndog! I was so worried about you. Don't ever wander away from me again!

LEO: I'm glad you're OK, Corndog. You must have the devil's own luck!

ELISE: Yaaay! We got our sister back!

get used to that "devil's luck" catchphrase by the way

HINOKA: Nohrian scum! First you kidnap her, now you lie to her?!

HINOKA: Corndog is MY sister, not yours!

CAMILLA: You are mistaken. Corndog is my sweet little sister. You may not have her.

RYOMA: Don't be fooled by their words. You belong with your true family in Hoshido!

XANDER: We have loved you and raised you since you were a child. Come home, little princess. We can live as a family once more!

Guy with evil sword... guy with lightning sword...

Purplish hair... red eyes and wild hair...

This is hard. We need an anime DNA test or something. Do we have that technology yet? Is there a staff for that?

RYOMA: Come home to Hoshido, Corndog!

XANDER: No, Corndog! Nohr is your home!

You know, neither one of you is really explaining your case very well. Who are you people again?

Wait hold on, everything's going white again

I think this sudden shake up in the family tree has been a bit much on Corndog, we might be passing out.

Yeah I think she's gone.

Welp. That was fast. Who knew fighting on a battlefield would make your family tree so difficult?

I was going to try and fit both the Prologue here and Chapter 01 together, and while I still could, this one's long enough- I forgot about the prologue movie. Next one'll be out soon though. This game starts out slow, but it'll take off rather suddenly.

See you next time, where things maybe make more sense and our protagonist gets a chance to say more than a battle line

--------------------------------------------------------------------

CORNDOG: Can we just go back to the part where she was in the water? It was less stressful.

Update 02: Life of A Slugabed (Ch.1 - Nohr)

VOICE: W-wake up! Wake up!

Oh, are we back already?

Chapter 1 - Nohr

Seems we are! Welcome back everyone.

There shall be many characters this update! Gameplay, not so much. That's next chapter and onwards. I went ahead and put it out as it's not too long.

Music: Paradise (Dark)

(I wouldn't say I'd call it paradise, but it's what we've got!)

Kingdom of Nohr: Northern Fortress

We slowly pan in to a firelit castle tower on a dark horizon. It's nestled deep within mountains, and stars are still in what sky we can see. What is presumably chimney smoke comes from a nearby structure.

FLORA: Time to wake up, Lady Corndog!

And Lady Corndog struggles to open her eye, still oh so very sleepy.

AGH WHAT

FELICIA: Hey, wake up, Lady Corndog! Up and at 'em!

oh it's just anime maids

actually that's not much better is it

It's an entire entourage of people in fact. Two maids, a butler, and an armored butler!

The entire last update was a dream sequence, a very weird one.

CORNDOG: Hrmmm... What are you talking about? It's still dark outside.

And so she makes the effort to at least sit up. Waking up is hard in the mornings, I get it.

This line brings in one of the fun parts of converting this game's script to LP transcript, which is that it is littered with errors and inconveniences. The game usually defines an expression for a character before they enter the scene, even if it's a redundant set to neutral, but sometimes it just doesn't. This happens a lot with Corndog in this scene.

:sigh:

GUNTER: Listen well, Princess. It may be dark, but it is indeed morning. You have practice today.

Gunter's not really our protagonist's butler, but he kind of is. Also Nohr is under some sort of perpetual darkness too, that's worth noting.

JAKOB: I have taken the liberty of readying your armor, and, er, pounding out the dents.

JAKOB: Your brother is a fearsome opponent, is he not?

CORNDOG: Ugh. Fine. I'm still not completely awake though...

Jakob, we sleep in this armor how did you... or is this just her pajarmor, and she wears an identical set for combat?

Oh, and Jakob's the actual butler. He's focused on being stern and proper, I gather.

FLORA: Oh, we can help you with that!

FLORA: Felicia, would you please assist me?

FELICIA: Sure thing!

And so they proceed to use some ice magic on her face. Talk about a rude awakening!

CORNDOG: Waauuugh! Cold cold cold! I'm awake! Totally awake now!

FLORA: That's how we deal with slugabeds in the Ice Tribe!

CORNDOG: *sigh* Trust me, I know.

the life of a slugabed is hard :(

Also our two maids here, Flora and Felicia are from the Ice Tribe. They have some inherent ice magic abilities, but it also never really comes into play mechanically. Flora's the more professional one, and Felicia, well, she tries her best. :shobon:

Oh, and these maid and butler outfits are some of the most sensible designs Nohr has to offer. If you don't believe me, just wait.

CORNDOG: I wish I could have finished the dream I was having though...

JAKOB: Interesting. Do tell—what kind of dream was it?

CORNDOG: It was...strange. Some people who looked like Hoshidans kept calling me their sister. But all of my brothers and sisters are here in Nohr...

Yeah, it was pretty weird. Oh, don't forget to mention the lady singing underwater! That happened too.

FLORA: Ah, Lady Corndog, perhaps we should talk about your dream another time?

FELICIA: It's time for you to get going, milady. Prince Xander is waiting for you!

Oh yeah, combat! Let's do that. The dream was probably totally irrelevant anyways.

And so Lady Corndog departs, her train of servants following behind.

Music: Dim Moonlight

(Nohr's got this general dark theme to it's music, and usually features these horns in some capacity.)

We catch up with her dueling someone on a horse on a rooftop, while someone else stands by.

She blocks one blow...

But takes the next two directly and ends up on her back, a distance away.

She struggles to her knees.

LEO: That's our sister for you. You won't beat the strongest knight in Nohr by sleeping all day, Corndog.

XANDER: Giving up so soon, Corndog? I expect more of you. You are a princess of Nohr! Pick up your sword and try again.

CORNDOG: But, Xander, I—

It's Xander and Leo, Corndog's brothers!

...Ryoma and Takumi, who are those people?

XANDER: We train like this so that we can defend ourselves from our enemies.

XANDER: Father has been tracking your progress. If you can't land a hit on me today... he may never permit you to leave the Northern Fortress. Ever.

CORNDOG: What?! D-did he really say that? That's insane!

Honestly, it's not such a bad plan. It doesn't really do to have your royal heirs be vulnerable to a simple bandit ambush.

XANDER: Motivated, are we? Then use that fire to best me in battle, little Princess. If you would see the outside world beyond the view from your window, defeat me.

XANDER: Prove that all of the time I've devoted to training you has not been in vain!

Also, she's a Princess, not just any lady. There's a lot of princes and princesses in this plot. This means she's literally a princess locked in a tower awaiting a hero.

Except in this case her hero is herself, if that makes any sense.

XANDER: The first move is yours, Corndog. Come at me when you are ready.

Music: Quiet Burn
Music: Quiet Burn (Roar)

(From now on, I'll link both variations of the battle themes together. )

Victory: Defeat the Boss

Also known as knock our brother's rear end off his high horse- literally!

Somehow, our heroine has carried over 77 experience from those two fights in the dream. How weird!

Presently she's only got 19 HP, 7 STR, 4 MAG, 7 SKILL, 8 SPD, 5 LCK, 6 DEF, and an abysmal 1 RES. All in all, pretty usual lord stats she's got under her special class of Nohr Prince/ss.

Something new to Fates is the addition of a character unique skill on top of the 5 class based ones. The one for our character is Supportive, which adds a bit of hit chance and effectively 2 STR and 2 DEF if she's paired with someone she's supported with.

This won't matter for a while though, as we don't unlock supports until Chapter 6. Aside from that skill, Nohr Princess also gives her 20% boosted EXP gain at all times, which I guess is an attempt to rebalance the 50% from Veteran in Awakening.

She's also wielding only a Bronze Sword presently. Despite how massive it is, the damage increase is minimal.

With nothing else to do, we charge our brother head on. They put him one tile out of our move range for some reason. I mean this is still a tutorial, but they already tutorialized this stuff in the Prologue.

Our brother's stats are terrible for a prepromoted Paladin, but it's because he's holding back quite a lot. His skill setup and statline are designed to guarantee he can two shot us no matter what we picked as our Boon and Bane, and that we can only three shot him.

XANDER: You swing timidly, without resolve. You must genuinely try to kill me.

Sheesh, so much tough love in this family.

We hit him for 8 out of 26, and he returns with 11 out of 19.

ouch

Well, on the enemy turn, he's sure to turn around and kill us instead.

CORNDOG: *pant*...*pant*...

XANDER: Hmm, looks like that wound needs attention. In that case...

He activates a Dragon Vein!

CORNDOG: Ah! There was a Dragon Vein here?

XANDER: Yes. You should have sensed it as well. The blood of dragons flows in your veins, as it does in all royals. You must learn to harness this draconic power wherever you may find it.

XANDER: Heal your wounds, Corndog, then find the courage to come at me again.

So instead of just bonking us like a normal enemy, he gives us time to heal.

You don't tell me what to do! :argh:

ow

CORNDOG: Brother...how are you... so strong...?

XANDER: Is that all it takes to defeat you? What a shame. I guess you don't wish to leave this fortress after all...

If you were wondering, you can game over here if you fail to follow the tutorial. :v:

So, let's not do that.

Actually following his instructions, we head off to the Healtile which is set to heal us for 50% max HP at the start of our turn. Pretty good!

We get all but 2 of our HP back, and we can safely get back in there.

XANDER: Good. Now that you've recovered some of your strength, try again!

We get back in there.

And what's this? That dream exp plus the combat exp means we've finally leveled up!

CORNDOG: Good. I'll be able to help more folks now.

HP, STR, SPD, and DEF! All the stats we regularly like to see go up on a physical unit.

This is technically run two of this, as I had to throw the first away thanks to the funky lighting on 2x resolution. On that run this level was everything but MAG, and her next was HP, STR, and RES- it's always the trashed attempts that get the best luck.

Eh, it was just two levels, Corn's got many more ahead of her.

Worth noting that while Xander could just destroy us right now, he actively passes his turn. It makes this work out better, but it may teach the wrong lesson to newer players.

And so she frontflips in for the finishing blow as there's no need to heal up again. Can't counterattack me if he's dead!

XANDER: Well done, Corndog.

I told you we'd literally knock him off his high horse. It's not that he's smug, he's just on a tall horse.

Another stage complete! In 5 turns!

...Tutorials! Yay!

The next combat we get to is actual fighting though, even if the real game doesn't start until Chapter 6.

Music: Homesick (Dark)

(It's not homesickness if you're sick of being at home. That's called cabin fever.)

XANDER: Well done, Corndog. You're getting stronger every day.

CORNDOG: Thanks, Xander. I couldn't have done it without your, uh, tough love.

XANDER: I disagree. I believe you have natural talent. Someday, you could be the greatest warrior in all of Nohr.

CORNDOG: Now you're just teasing me.

XANDER: You know me, Corndog. I never joke about serious matters. I mean what I say. You could be the one to bring light to our kingdom so long shrouded in darkness.

CORNDOG: Xander...

Us, the protagonist, save the day? Unthinkable!

There's a decent chance Corndog will be the greatest warrior in all of Nohr, but a second generation character may steal from under us. That or just bad luck on growths.

LEO: Typical. You do know that true strength is more than simple swordplay, right?

CORNDOG: Leo, he didn't mean—

XANDER: Calm yourself, little brother. You really are competitive to a fault. As I've always said, you're a talented mage with formidable magical abilities.

LEO: Hmm. Well, just remember that pointy metal sticks are not the only path to power.

Magic is a viable path for you to lean Corndog towards, but unlike Robin, you won't really be able to make use of it as a stat until you can reclass. Nohr Prince/ss only has access to Swords.

Also, Leo's definitely the middle child who tries to act cool and competitive, but is a giant dork.

Why do I say that?

CORNDOG: Oh, that reminds me of something I've been meaning to tell you, Leo.

LEO: Something important enough to derail this conversation?

CORNDOG: Well...your collar is inside out.

LEO: What?!

XANDER: It would appear someone got dressed while still half-asleep.

LEO: Ugh! Wh-why didn't you say something earlier?!

And so he runs off-screen to fix it.

XANDER: Haha, sorry, Leo. But that sort of thing is what makes you so very lovable.

CORNDOG: Absolutely.

LEO: Hmph...

Following this, Xander and Corndog look behind them to where two people have slowly been approaching.

They're uh, two opposites on a scale.

CAMILLA: Are you all right, Corndog? Did you get hurt at all during practice? If you did, let me know right away so I can take extra-special care of you...

CORNDOG: I'm perfectly fine, Camilla. As always, thanks for your concern.

Camilla's our older sister, and as you might be able to tell already, likes us a bit too much.

If you're wondering why she's the only one of our siblings without blond-ish hair, there is an explanation for that.

ELISE: I was worried about you too, Corndog!

CORNDOG: I know, Elise. You wouldn't visit me all the time if you didn't care so much, right?

ELISE: Heehee... Do you like it when I visit?

CORNDOG: Of course! I'm not allowed to leave this fortress, so visits are all I look forward to!

ELISE: Yaaay! I'm glad to hear that. Spending time with my sister makes me so happy!

Elise is the youngest, and is generally just trying to have fun. She also has probably the most color in visible color in her design, whereas the rest of the siblings would melt into the dark Nohr haze if it wasn't for the shiny gold accents on their armor.
Between her pink and Corndog's pink, they're the most visible in this scene.

CORNDOG: Gah!

ELISE: I love you so much! I love you more than anything in the whole, wide world!

Following this she tackles Corndog into a hug, somehow managing to swing a full circle twice in the process. One has to applaud our heroine's balance during all of this.

Elise quite likes our heroine, but isn't obsessed in the same way Camilla is.

LEO: Elise, when do you intend to behave like the adult that you technically are?

*cough* moving on *cough*

CAMILLA: Well, I for one think her cheer is a good complement to this gloomy kingdom, Leo.

CORNDOG: Well said, Camilla. Every one of you is so dear to me. You've all been so patient and kind since I lost my memory...

CORNDOG: I don't even mind being quarantined when I'm with you. I'm so grateful to have you all.

To follow in the trend of recent FE player characters, Corndog is also amnesic. This means I'm now LPing two games with amnesic main characters and one game where they just don't know anything.

Part of me feels that Corndog was just a nickname before she lost her memory, but now that happened, it's just kinda stuck for good.

Either that, or it's just a very rare, old Nohrian name. Corrin was just too common, it was the most common baby name of the year when she was born, maybe.

XANDER: We are grateful to have you as well. But, Corndog, I have some—

CAMILLA: Let me tell her, Xander! We have wonderful news, Corndog! Father asked us to take you back to the capital!

CORNDOG: Really?! Does that mean...

CAMILLA: Yes. It means you can finally leave this drafty fortress. You must have been so lonely all this time, separated from the rest of the world...

CAMILLA: But now you'll be free!

And so we have successfully fought our way out of our tower! Well, kinda. It seems like the whole family was sent here to get us anyways, so maybe it was all a bit moot.

ELISE: Isn't that wonderful?!

CORNDOG: It...it really is. Thanks, Elise. Wow... I'm finally leaving this place...

CORNDOG: Maybe now I can join you all as a soldier, fighting for Nohr?

XANDER: There will be plenty of time to discuss the details with Father. Let us depart.

"All this war stuff sounds like a fun game, can I join in too?"

And so we're on our way out! It seems the servant retinue is here to send us off, and even someone new!

LILITH: I hear you can finally leave the fortress. You must be very happy, Lady Corndog.

LILITH: Gunter has asked me to go with you to the capital so I can look after your horses.

CORNDOG: Glad to hear it! I'd miss you if you weren't coming along too.

Being just a stablehand, Lilith is more simply dressed than the other maids, unusual red gem on the forehead aside. I'm sure that's not important or relevant at all.

also i guess they ran out of time to make this a 3D cutscene, despite them loading all the models for like 4 seconds

XANDER: Lilith, are the horses ready?

LILITH: Yes, milord. Everything is ready, and the horses seem excited for the trip. They are all very fond of Lady Corndog. Probably from all her time in the stables.

CAMILLA: Our Corndog does love animals. Such a kindhearted soul... Why, she even nursed an injured baby bird back to health one time!

Corndog, despite her general visage, tries to make friends with everyone, including animals. She's even got that talent with dragons we gave her!

Despite this, we're the only one out of the Nohrian princes and princesses that doesn't ride a horse for some reason.

LILITH: Ah...

CORNDOG: Lilith, is something wrong?

LILITH: Oh...no. It's nothing.

ELISE: Isn't it obvious, Corndog? Lilith is sad because she's going to miss you!

CORNDOG: Miss me? But she's coming with us.

ELISE: Oh, right! Well then, I bet she's sad 'cause she won't have you all to herself anymore. You've always been especially fond of our sister, haven't you, Lilith?

LILITH: I, er—

This isn't even from the patch, this bit's just normally here.

Unfortunately, Lilith won't actually be joining our army, so we won't be able to make this go anywhere. I believe there is a mod for it, I just don't have it installed for this.

She's still coming with though, so we'll at least get to see what this is all about.

XANDER: As gripping as all this is, we should be on our way. We mustn't keep Father waiting.

CORNDOG: Yes, let's go!

That's fine though because...

GUNTER: Flora, you and Jakob will remain here to watch over the fortress. Felicia and I will accompany Lady Corndog. We may be gone for some time. Take good care of the place.

FLORA: Of course! You may rely on us.

JAKOB: I wish you safe travels, Lady Corndog.

CORNDOG: Thank you. I hope to see both of you again soon...just not here!

Normally, Jakob would accompany Lady Corndog and with Felicia joining Lord Corndog instead. But with this being the Gay Fates LP, that wouldn't do now would it?

He'll join pretty early on later anyway, unlike our siblings. They put a lot of work into really trying to endear you to them here and for the next while, but they'll remain just NPCs for quite some time.

As for the story so far, they've definitely thrown a lot of named faces at us in short succession. The dream sequence from last update sets up a payoff for later like Awakening's prologue, but it feels a bit much especially for how this chapter goes and how short the time until payoff will actually be.

Mechanically, It's one tightly scripted tutorial into another tightly scripted tutorial that teaches nearly the same basic mechanics. Weakening at range is something they could have easily put in the next chapter, and you'll see why.

Knowing what I do know about the game's story, I'd say it'd have better if they made the Prologue something more specifically relevant to Revelations than the big thing that was already telegraphed in all the marketing. After all, this game was marketed as the one to answer all the unanswered questions- having a mysterious dream at the front wouldn't hurt anything.

That's all for this (rather short) chapter, but before we go, here's a look at Corndog's profile:

----------------------------------

Corndog, Nohr Princess
"A Nohrian royal raised in isolation whose origin is shrouded in mystery."

Reclass Options: Wyvern Rider

Personal Skill: Supportive- When user is the support unit, if the lead unit has a C Support or higher, the lead unit's Hit Rate +10, damage +2 and damage received -2.

Base Growths + Class Growths
HP___ STR__ MAG__ SKL__ SPD___ LCK__ DEF___ RES
45 ____45 ____30 ____45 ____55 ____50 ____35 ____15
15 ____15 ____10 ____10 ____10 ____10 ____10 ____05

As I've never played this before, I can only really give my opinion on what I've seen so far. Those seem like some pretty good growths, and I'm honestly not worried about that RES if we're aiming for Wyvern Rider later anyways.

We haven't really seen everything Nohr Prince/ss has to offer yet, but it'll come in time.

Fates introduces being able to borrow other characters' classes by achieving max level support with them, and with the Gay Patch, I believe this means we can really mix and match everyone.

Why yes, I DO have enough CON to whip my hair.

Huh, was the same gender maid/butler joining you added later?
When I tried this patch with female Corrin, Jakob still joined me.
Though that was a few versions ago.

Also kinda curious how the A+ support classes will be handled here.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I assume the Felicia/Jakob switch is a separate mod.
