Here's one of those ticks being almost giddy with joy at the prospect of a 50-seat Conservative majority in 2017, and then looking confused and upset when the real result was Labour's best performance in 20 years and the elimination of the Tory majority.

Just to re-emphasise - this guy is a Labour MP.
think i said this at some point before, but i'm still social media 'friends' (in the sense that i have a facebook i never updatge but check sometimes) with two guys i went to school with back in the 90s. one's a stereotypical petit-bourgeois default-tory voter, and the other went into politics and worked as a labor staffer for several years, still a self-described liberal and progressive

the tory guy went out and did volunteer work for the first time in 2019, because he lived in consett and really disliked having laura pidcock as his mp (i guess because of the press going after her so much). the morning after the election he was really happy, but it was (i hate to say) a positive happiness, like the mirror image of a lot of people here in 2017 - 'oh my god, we did it, what a great result and i can't believe i played a little part in it, this is amazing!'

the labor guy, who had no connection to consett, was even happier, but in a different way - 'great result! thank gently caress we're rid of that rancid little poo poo pidcock, this will make it easier to ensure there's no repeat of corbyn and *we* get *our* party back'

Actually, if you read the Beeb article about it, you'll find that that were actually protestors concerned that the story time was "sexualising their children". They held placards and banners, and two of them interrupted the performance. However, the drag performer has stated that their act is not at all sexual in nature, and he was upset by the protest.

Lol he's trying to spin it as not being for joining the picket line, but for talking to the media while he was there:

quote:

A spokesperson said: "The Labour Party will always stand up for working people fighting for better pay, terms and conditions at work.

"This isn't about appearing on a picket line. Members of the frontbench sign up to collective responsibility. That includes media appearances being approved and speaking to agreed frontbench positions.

"As a government-in-waiting, any breach of collective responsibility is taken extremely seriously and for these reasons Sam Tarry has been removed from the frontbench."

If it's grandad-based only (i.e. neither of your parents was born in Ireland or N.I.) you might want to get started on that now, because TheDoctor's right - you need to be on the Register of Foreign Births before you can become a citizen and apply for a passport, and per their website it needs a lot of original documentation and the current time to complete the registration process is two years.

https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/moving_country/irish_citizenship/foreign_births_register.html

(Haven't done the process myself; some relatives have got passports, but it was through having an Irish parent, where you're automatically a citizen and the process is much simpler.)

Since this thread has some good historians, another goon was wondering aloud if there's any books that deep dive into German public knowledge of what was going on during the Reich up to the point of liberation by the Allied forces, how much the propaganda was believed/disputed and how those who disbelieved it got information. Does anyone know of any books like that? Most of the stuff that easily comes to hand is more about the actions of the resistance movement whereas they were, and made me, curious about the general population.
It's probably more anecdotal than you're looking for, but: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_Thought_They_Were_Free. A journalist who lived in a university town in West Germany in the early 50s got a bunch of people he befriended there to open up to him about what (they felt) it was 'really like' to live under the Nazi regime from 33 to 45. Obviously a limited representation and skewed in terms of gender/class (most of them are petit-bourgeois men who are like 'oh it was ok, apart from the war'), but still pretty interesting.

The one guy who was a lib and didn't like the Nazis much but felt powerless to do anything except grumble privately talking about the forms vs the spirit of society still gives me a very uncomfortable feeling, more so in the last half-decade for some reason:

quote:

“But the one great shocking occasion, when tens or hundreds or thousands will join with you, never comes. That’s the difficulty. If the last and worst act of the whole regime had come immediately after the first and smallest, thousands, yes, millions would have been sufficiently shocked—if, let us say, the gassing of the Jews in ’43 had come immediately after the ‘German Firm’ stickers on the windows of non-Jewish shops in ’33. But of course this isn’t the way it happens. In between come all the hundreds of little steps, some of them imperceptible, each of them preparing you not to be shocked by the next. Step C is not so much worse than Step B, and, if you did not make a stand at Step B, why should you at Step C? And so on to Step D.

And one day, too late, your principles, if you were ever sensible of them, all rush in upon you. The burden of self-deception has grown too heavy, and some minor incident, in my case my little boy, hardly more than a baby, saying ‘Jewish swine,’ collapses it all at once, and you see that everything, everything, has changed and changed completely under your nose. The world you live in—your nation, your people—is not the world you were born in at all. The forms are all there, all untouched, all reassuring, the houses, the shops, the jobs, the mealtimes, the visits, the concerts, the cinema, the holidays. But the spirit, which you never noticed because you made the lifelong mistake of identifying it with the forms, is changed. Now you live in a world of hate and fear, and the people who hate and fear do not even know it themselves; when everyone is transformed, no one is transformed. Now you live in a system which rules without responsibility even to God. The system itself could not have intended this in the beginning, but in order to sustain itself it was compelled to go all the way.”

Don't know about the author, but I remember the book got a lot of pushback because the main thesis is that German identity is inherently anti-semitic in a way no other country is and so Germans are uniquely prone to doing Holocausts:

'(Goldhagen argues that the) vast majority of ordinary Germans were "willing executioners" in the Holocaust because of a unique and virulent "eliminationist antisemitism" in German political culture which had developed in the preceding centuries. Goldhagen argues that eliminationist antisemitism was the cornerstone of German national identity, was unique to Germany, and because of it ordinary German conscripts killed Jews willingly. Goldhagen asserts that this mentality grew out of medieval attitudes rooted in religion and was later secularized.'
