WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW?
After our aborted attempt at Mizzurna Falls really impacted our sanity, Dewgy and I decided to do some stupid one-off projects for a while until we’re feeling up to conquering another long series that may or may not give us fits like the last one did. To that end, we’ve decided to do some VS. stuff with a whole bunch of sports games.

WHY ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING THAT?
Why not? We’ve been doing the LP thing for a long time, but with the exception of two games (Rocket League and Behold the Kickmen), we haven’t touched the sports realm at all. On top of that, we haven’t really done anything where we’ve been playing together…or, well, in this case, against each other. It’ll be an interesting turn of format!

SO, WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT TO SEE?
Mostly, whatever weird sports games we can find! No real “mainstream” stuff on this go round (with one early exception)—we’re looking for things that are off-beat, not sports that are featured in the US, or just plan weird made-up stuff. We’ve dug up a number of things on our own, but :bubblewoop: WE’RE OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS :bubblewoop: on what to do here (as long as we can get it working, that is!)
In terms of our ability…well, if any of you out there enjoyed the incompetence that was either of my NCAA experiments (which, sadly, have been deleted—my personal YouTube channel got nuked a while ago for as-of-yet unknown reasons), then this will fit for you! If you enjoy laughing at (or with) us at the stupid things we do, then this’ll be great for you, as well!

….and now, without further ado, please enjoy SPORTS

Something I'd like to point out here is we had to re-do a few chunks of these a few times, so occasionally we did have practice with the stages, but it was mostly a blind run for both of us.

And it made no difference in the end!!! :black101:

If only my luck would hold up consistently like that going forward... :sweatdrop:

And regardless of how much I got my entire rear end handed to me it was great getting a chance to hear SBL's soundtrack again for the first time in probably 20 years. Such a great SNES game, sports or not.

THE SPORT:

Australian Rules Football, a game with an egg-shaped balled played on an egg-shaped field, with positions such as "ruckman" and "ruck-rover", and a penalty called "incorrect disposal"

THE GAME:

Aussie Rules Footy, a PAL-only NES game that is pretty wonky. In preparing the thread, I discovered that there is at least one person that has attempted to mod the game to reflect the modern AFL (the Aussie Rules Football professional league). If you're really curious, you can check the efforts here

THE CONTEST:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIzVl77idSw
As you can see....it's an interesting little game. We had some fun with it...also struggled getting our head around some of the game mechanics and how they were implemented. Also, be ready to hear "Outta bounds, on the full" A LOT

Having tried this one out I’m definitely curious to see how more modern takes on the game handle. Despite doing absolutely terrible it was pretty fun, and AFL Evolution 2 came out on PS4 in 2020. Maybe it’ll be worth revisiting once we get past all the retro stuff!

THE SPORT

Cricket! A sport that is the 2nd most popular in the world, which means that us 'Muricans don't care about it at all.

Fun fact: A professional cricket league, Major League Cricket (creative name there, guys), is starting in the US in 2023.

THE GAME

Brian Lara Cricket '96, released in PAL regions for the Mega Drive, PC, and Amiga. In Australia and New Zealand, it was released as Shane Warne Cricket

THE CONTEST

While the perspective makes it really difficult to judge when to swing sometimes, and the fielding being complete rear end, this was kinda fun. I've personally wanted to learn and try to play cricket, so this was an interesting introduction to how an actual game plays out, instead of just knowing the rules and how it works. Perhaps this could warrant a re-visit for a newer entry once we've gone through a bunch of other sports.

Yeah not gonna lie I really really enjoyed this game. Got me all looking up backyard cricket sets and modern video game versions afterwards.

Cricket ‘22 seems to be the way to go if you want the modern experience, though there’s more choices available on the PS store than I would have expected. There haven’t been any Brian Lara games since 2007 though. :(

THE SPORT

Motorcycle road racing! I know that is doesn't really fit the "ball" part of the sportsball motif here, but we're still gonna count it!

THE GAME

Road Rash II for the Genesis/Mega Drive, released in 1992

THE CONTEST
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbPtfa1Fm6A
Holy framerates, Batman! This was difficult to play because of how bad the framerate is on this. I've played most of the Genesis entries in the series before, but never in 2 player mode, and....ouch. It made it really hard to judge turning so as it was, but then throw some shakiness from Parsec in there and I had a real tough time making adjustments on the first race. Eventually got the hang of it, though.

It's a pretty simplistic idea, and it has some fun to it. I'm sure it might have been a little different experience had we chosen a more modern representation.

Rugby! Another handegg sport that involves a moderate amount of kicking (not as much as Aussie Rules, but way more than American football), and looks hella painful!

THE GAME (sorry for the size!)

(Had to go with the old print ad rather than just the box art)
Rugby World Cup '95 for the Genesis/Mega Drive! I remember taking this out as a rental quite often when I was younger, and I remembered it being pretty fun

THE CONTEST

It wasn't as fun as I remembered, but it's still a good time! EA adapted their FIFA International Soccer engine for the game, so it doesn't always feel quite right, but its pretty responsive and somewhat intuitive. The problem is keeping track of the action and who has the ball, but that could've been because we both were pretty terrible at this!

Sorry to say I think something got messed up with the audio on Gordo's course. Now I'm not saying you recorded the session against an empty chair and did a fantastic bit of performance art to make us think you were actually competing with someone just so you could win a round, but it does appear that only half of the audio is present after about 30 minutes into Course 3/4.

The (Summer) Olympics! Once a proud centerpiece for any country's cultural and monetary power, now a giant boondoggle that usually sees more scandals and issues in its staging than anything else. Still winds up being a really awesome time, though--assuming you live in a country that treats it as a spectacle for everyone and allows access to content for free (unlike the US)

So, it took forever to get back to, but we finally have out re-take of Winter Olympics up! It's still bad!

We have another surprise, unscheduled, unplanned update to go along with that, too!

As a nice refresher, enjoy an actual good game played in a new way. For some background: In Super Punch-Out!!, there are some 2-button cheat codes. Two had already been discovered forever ago--one to allow Japanese name entry characters in the US version, and a sound test. What's been recently discovered is this: Press and hold Y and R on controller 2 at the title screen while controller 1 presses A or Start--it brings you to a "stage select", where you can do a one-off fight with any of the boxers in the game without having to go through the circuits!

The second discovered code is even better! Once you select an opponent in this mode, at the fighter information screen, you hold B and Y on controller 2 and start the match (keep holding through the fade-out and until the announcer starts). Now controller 2 controls the CPU fighter!

We did the only respectable thing and ran through every fighter, and tested our skills!

THE GAME

Dunno where they're getting the "140 MPH" part from--the hardest shot on record is only 108 (although there are arguments that Al MacInnis could've topped that by using a composite stick), and I don't see it going much faster than that
