CFL 2022 SEASON MEGATHREAD Welcome to the CFL 2022 Season which kicked off last night. Your defending champions are the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the rest of the league is still trying to catch up to the back to back champs. Going to copy most of what I had last year so here we go. Montreal Alouettes  Head Coach: Khari Jones Starting QB: Vernon Adams Jr. 2021 Record: 7-7, Lost to Hamilton in the Eastern Semi-Final Championship Odds: +1000 Montreal took a step back last season even with strong play early from Vernon Adams they still lost a lot of close games. Adams injured his shoulder in week 10 which put him out for the season and Montreal went on to win a few games with backup Matt Schlitz and traded for former Ottawa and Edmonton starter Trevor Harris. Neither was able to play consistently enough to make a push to win the east and they ultimately fell to Hamilton in the Eastern Semi-Final 23-12. Khari Jones and Vernon Adams will both be on the hot seat this year as Montreal needs to show some serious improvement in an incredibly week Eastern Division. Ottawa REDBLACKS  Head Coach: Paul LaPolice Starting QB: Jeremiah Masoli 2021 Record: 3-11, Missed the Playoffs Championship Odds: +1600 For the second straight season Ottawa had the worst offense and defense in the league and the Matt Nichols experiment was a failure. There is a lot of optimism though for this season as the team added former Hamilton star QB Jeremiah Masoli along with WRs Darvin Adams and Jaelon Acklin in free agency. That should at least give Ottawa a baseline competitive offense this year. If the defense doesn't get shredded week to week this could be a surprise team out of the East. Toronto Argonauts  Head Coach: Ryan Dinwiddie Starting QB: McLeod Bethel-Thompson 2021 Record: 9-5, Missed the Playoffs, Lost to Hamilton in the Eastern Final Championship Odds: +600 Toronto was a bit of enigma in 2021, they won the Eastern division with a negative point differential with a seemingly different team showing up week to week. Bethel-Thompson is firmly entrenched as the starting QB and Dinwiddie is in his 2nd as head coach. They are betting on stability to win the East and try and make it all the way this year. Hamilton Tiger-Cats  Head Coach: Orlondo Steinauer Starting QB: Dane Evans 2021 Record: 8-6, Lost to Winnipeg in the Grey Cup Championship Odds: +550 Another season, another loss to Winnipeg in the Grey Cup, this time in heartbreaking fashion on an overtime double tipped interception. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93tWlXRKKn4&t=8396s Hamilton lost Masoli in the offseason and a couple receivers in the off-season but it's been a constant back and forth between him and Dane Evans for the last two years. They still have a pretty crushing defense and should be the favourites to win the East again this year and hopefully not lose to Winnipeg three years in a row in the big game. Winnipeg Blue Bombers  Head Coach: Mike O'Shea Starting QB: Zach Collaros 2021 Record: 11-3, Won the Grey Cup Championship Odds: +250 See video above. Winnipeg was the most dominant team in the CFL last year giving up 56 less points than the second ranked defense in the league and outscoring the 2nd ranked offense in the league by 15. It got a little tight in the playoffs but they won their second Grey Cup in a row and appear to be favourites for a third. Between the NFL and CFL free agency the Bombers lost 8 starters in the off-season but retained a ton of their star players, if they can off-set those losses this will be a dangerous team once again. Saskatchewan Roughriders  Head Coach: Craig Dickenson Starting QB: Cody Fajardo 2021 Record: 9-5, Lost the West Final to Winnipeg Championship Odds: +500 The theme of 2021 mirroring 2019 continues. Saskatchewan once again lost to Winnipeg in the Western Final last year. They return what feels like is pretty much the same team as last year. Fajardo had a little back and forth with the fans last year on Social Media in 2021 during a mid-season slump so it feels like if they can't breakthrough and make the Grey Cup this year he may be on the hot seat. Calgary Stampeders  Head Coach: Dave Dickenson Starting QB: Jake Maier 2021 Record: 8-6, Lost the West Semi-Final to Saskatchewan Championship Odds: +500 Going to cheat a little on this one. Bo Levi Mitchell got injured last night and has struggled with injures for the last couple seasons so it looks like this may be Jake Maier's team going forward. Calgary lost a interception filled, kicking happy West Semi-Final to Saskatchewan last year and their dominant run appears over. This is a team in transition and if they get a couple breaks they could win it all especially given the next two teams in the West. Edmonton Elks  Head Coach: Chris Jones Starting QB: Nick Arbuckle 2021 Record: 3-11 Championship Odds: +1200 Chris Jones is back and as much of an rear end in a top hat than ever! Jones was the last coach to win a Grey Cup in Edmonton after which he abruptly left to go coach Saskatchewan and after some struggles and controversy there he abruptly left as soon as he found an NFL job. The Elks have more talent around roster the season than last year but the Jones/Arbuckle pairing seemed destined for failure. BC Lions  Head Coach: Rick Campbell Starting QB: Nathan Rourke 2021 Record: 5-9, Missed the playoffs Championship Odds: +1400 BC is probably the most uninspiring team to write about out of all of them. Rourke looked okay last year and could take a step here, Rick Campbell seems like he's in a lame duck year until better hiring options come open next year and overall the roster is just meh.
