Welcome to the new USCE thread for 2022. This is a quick reminder that USCE is for discussing of current events and news about the United States in the year of our LORD 2022. If anyone has some interesting articles they wish to talk about, post it here! And please add some of your own commentary to it first. This isn't supposed to be a place to just dump bad tweets. There are plenty of other places to do that on SA, or if you just like reading those, do it on Twitter with the weirdos.

Another reminder, this isn't a place to make broad, sweeping ideological statements without providing new content in ways to discuss them. This would be probated under the D&D rule 2.C: "Fresh or Falsifiable."

Here is just a quick update on your regularly scheduled horrible news coming from the United States in the past week.

The Texas Republican Party has released their new platform, and it is purestrain crazy.

quote:

LGBTQ Americans
Homosexuality

2014: “Homosexuality is a chosen behavior that is contrary to the fundamental unchanging truths that have been ordained by God in the Bible, recognized by our nation’s founders, and shared by the majority of Texans. Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable alternative lifestyle, in public policy, nor should family be redefined to include homosexual couples. We believe there should be no granting of special legal entitlements or creation of special status for homosexual behavior, regardless of state of origin. Additionally, we oppose any criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values.”

2022: “Homosexuality is an abnormal lifestyle choice. We believe there should be no granting of special legal entitlements or creation of special status for homosexual behavior, regardless of state of origin, and we oppose any criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values. No one should be granted special legal status based on their LGBTQ+ identification.”

Transgender

2014: Not included.

2022: The platform includes explicit opposition to “all efforts to validate transgender identity,” to any medical treatments related to transitioning for those under 21 and to using taxpayer funding for related treatments.

Immigration
Statement of core principles

2014: “America is proudly a nation of immigrants. Throughout our history, our nation has attracted productive, industrious and gifted people to America because she is exceptional, and those immigrants and their descendants helped make America the world’s unrivaled economic and military superpower. It remains imperative to create fair and consistent procedures that will again enable freedom-loving, hard-working and law-abiding immigrants to join us, by providing them an efficient, practical method of legal entry, so they can lawfully take positions where their labor is needed, without exploitation or harassment.”

2022: Not included.

Citizenship

2014: “We call on the Texas Legislature to pass a constitutional amendment that defines citizenship as those born to a citizen of the United States or through naturalization.”

2022: “Support a change to the 14th Amendment to eliminate ‘birth tourism’ or anchor babies by granting citizenship only to those with at least one biological parent who is a US citizen.”

Political power
Secession

2014: Not included.

2022: “Pursuant to Article 1, Section 1, of the Texas Constitution, the federal government has impaired our right of local self-government. Therefore, federally mandated legislation that infringes upon the 10th Amendment rights of Texas should be ignored, opposed, refused, and nullified. Texas retains the right to secede from the United States, and the Texas Legislature should be called upon to pass a referendum consistent thereto.”

Joe Biden fell off his bike. He appeared mostly fine afterward.

Eric Greitens, former Gov. of Missouri who resigned in disgrace 3 years ago, is running for Senate, and has a new campaign video that says to kill all RINOS. Twitter and Facebook took the video down.

quote:

“Join the MAGA crew,” Greitens tells the camera, referring to Republican former President Donald Trump’s slogan, Make America Great Again. “Get a RINO hunting permit. There’s no bagging limit, no tagging limit and it doesn’t expire until we save our country.”

The ad was released amid a national debate over gun violence following the May 24 Texas elementary school massacre that left 19 students and two teachers dead and the racially motivated killing of 10 Black people in Buffalo, New York, on May 14.

Happy posting!

Of course, they don't think Donald actually lost, so there's that, but still. The ones on board with Trump absolutely worship that moron.

This was the plan in 2016 when they came into election day thinking he would lose. Deny losing, deny reality, start Trump TV, and reap the profits. Build your cult of personality that way.

We've added some more steps but the idea was always there.

Christie got elected because he ran against Jon Corzine in 09 who had passed several tax hikes in 07 and then had the economy crumble in 09. Even then it was pretty close. For perspective, the 2021 election with a media narrative of "Dems barely hold on to NJ with Republicans striking back" when Murphy won by 3.2%, and Christie beat Corzine by 3.6% in 09.

He won re-election in 13 because of his photo-ops with Obama after Sandy, where even my vote blue no matter who parents said "I'm not voting for him but he did a good job after Sandy." It then came out a year later that the Sandy rebuild fund was a huge clusterfuck with rampant corruption and Bridgegate and everything else hit the fan with him.

What part of the Manchin cycle is this?

Manchin, in a Reversal, Agrees to Climate and Tax Package

quote:

WASHINGTON — Senator Joe Manchin III, Democrat of West Virginia, announced on Wednesday that he had struck a deal with Democratic leaders on a domestic spending package that includes climate and energy programs and tax increases, less than two weeks after abruptly upending hopes for such a deal this summer.

In a statement, Mr. Manchin, who had been his party’s main holdout on an expansive social policy, climate and tax package, confirmed his support for the measure in a statement that did not provide detail on its precise elements. But in the statement, he signaled support for climate and energy programs, as well as some tax provisions, all of which he had previously suggested he could not support because of concerns about inflation.

It was not clear what had changed his mind about the plan, which only weeks ago he had said he could not back until he saw more economic data next month.

“Rather than risking more inflation with trillions in new spending, this bill will cut the inflation taxes Americans are paying, lower the cost of health insurance and prescription drugs, and ensure our country invests in the energy security and climate change solutions we need to remain a global superpower through innovation rather than elimination,” Mr. Manchin said in a statement.

Mr. Manchin pointedly christened the bill the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, making a clear distinction between it and the ambitious multitrillion-dollar domestic policy plan President Biden proposed and Democrats in Congress spent most of last year toiling to pass.

“Build Back Better is dead, and instead we have the opportunity to make our country stronger by bringing Americans together,” Mr. Manchin said. “I will do everything I can to usher in a new era of compromise and common sense that will make America more energy secure, financially sound and a more united country for this generation and the next.”

Democrats had resigned themselves to passing a narrow package aimed at lowering the cost of prescription drugs and extending expanded Affordable Care Act subsidies before leaving for the August recess, after Mr. Manchin privately told party leaders this month that he would not support any climate or tax proposals in the short term.

That's the entire article, so I'm guessing the NYT didn't think this was going to happen and had no pre-print.

Also because I'm a sucker for the comments section:

quote:

Manchin has been beaten into submission and will now follow the Democrat party line. Too bad, he was the only thing stopping the Democrats from completely destroying the America that everyone from around the World is coming to because it is better than where they were coming from, and everything is free if one is an illegal immigrant. After the Democrats are done America will no longer be the place illegal immigrants or anyone else are going crazy to come to. Too bad it was a good run while it lasted.

NY Times - Death of Rep. Tom McClintock’s Wife Tied to White Mulberry Leaf

quote:

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office determined earlier this year that the 2021 death of Loretta McClintock, the wife of Representative Tom McClintock, Republican of California, was caused by “adverse effects” from ingestion of white mulberry leaf.

The coroner’s report, dated March 10, was released after Kaiser Health News obtained a copy and disclosed it on Wednesday. The coroner found that Ms. McClintock’s death had been accidental, caused by dehydration from stomach inflammation after she consumed the herb.

Ms. McClintock, known as Lori, was found unresponsive on Dec. 15, 2021, by her husband at their home in Elk Grove, Calif. The day before, she had complained of an upset stomach, according to a copy of the report from the coroner’s office. She was 61 years old.

She and Mr. McClintock were married for 34 years and had two children together, according to an obituary posted on Mr. McClintock’s social media accounts. Ms. McClintock worked as a real estate agent, and “she made possible Tom’s public service through the California legislature and Congress,” her obituary said.

Mr. McClintock has represented California’s Fourth Congressional District since 2009. He ran unsuccessfully for governor in the 2003 recall election and for lieutenant governor in 2006. He is now running for re-election in the Fifth Congressional District.

A “partially intact” white mulberry leaf was found in Ms. McClintock’s stomach, Kaiser Health News reported.

White mulberry leaf, often sold as an extract or powder in capsules, is regularly promoted by supplement companies as a dietary aid that can curb cravings and lower blood sugar. Several medical studies, including a 2013 paper in The Journal of Medicinal Food, seem to suggest that ingesting white mulberry leaves and its extract can help reduce obesity. It is widely available over the counter and from Amazon and other online retailers.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration monitors dietary supplements, which are categorized as food, not medicine. This means that supplements are not held to the same standards of rigorous testing as other products, such as prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Companies selling supplements are responsible for ensuring that their products are safe and that their claims are “truthful and substantiated,” according to the F.D.A.

The agency does not maintain a list of the dietary supplements on the market. In the United States, the industry is worth an estimated $35 billion, and there are about 50,000 to 80,000 of these products, according to The A.M.A. Journal of Ethics.

Companies do not need to notify the F.D.A. about new products or secure approval for their sale, but they are required to follow the agency’s labeling and manufacturing mandates, the agency said.

Senators Richard Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, and Mike Braun, Republican of Indiana, introduced bipartisan legislation in April requiring supplement companies to register their products with the F.D.A. and provide the agency with a list of all ingredients. The bill has been referred to the Senate health committee.
