Yeah, the Underdark in Forgotten Realms is very much not particularly nice to anyone trying to live there who isn't either an utter bastard and/or incredibly powerful. Like, Duergar and Drow aren't even remotely the worst threats down there, just the most commonly encountered since they live fairly close to the surface themselves. Get a bit deeper and you start running into really horrible stuff like Beholder hives and Mind Flayer cities. Or any number of liches or other powerful undead that have made lairs down there.

The primary reason Beholders aren't a much bigger problem than they are is because they all believe sincerely that the Proper Order Of Things is one Beholder, and all the other Beholders are foul mockeries of the True Perfect Image Of God.

Mind Flayers are actually capable of cooperating with one another and even lesser species. For a time, at least.

True. Too many RPGs, pen & paper, electronic or otherwise, favour the alpha-strike mentality of eliminating all possible threats as soon as possible. The prevalance of 'save-or-suck' abilities, speed as a frequent god stat and the rarety of mechanics wherein monsters do less damage as they are weakened are all examples of that mentality.

There's also the problem that in most RPGs, sensibly played enemies will ignore the heavily armored stack of bricks and focus fire on the obvious glass cannon first. There doesn't tend to be an obvious taunting mechanic in the game.

I can't help but think that the optimum solution for Hulrun would be to point him and his fanatics at the thickest cluster of demons and let them go out in the blaze of glory they so clearly want and take some of the pressure off of those of us who are trying to work together to save the city.
