Hello all. I got a call earlier that my dad, while climbing a ladder to cut down some vines, fell, fractured 17 ribs and broke his scapula in multiple places. He then went inside and took a nap rather than call 911, but woke up from the pain after the shock wore off and called a cab to take him to the hospital. He's in a ton of pain despite the painkillers and barely able to move, so his options to do anything or be entertained are limited. His 70th birthday is tomorrow, so I want to make his birthday in the hospital slightly less lovely and painless as possible. I thought I'd ask goons for assistance in assembling a youtube playlist for him to watch while incapacitated. I've gotten him one of these already so his phone can be positioned for ease of youtube watching with minimal movement. He likes documentaries, especially history and science docs but also some entertainment documentaries such as about old tv shows(like Mr. Ed), good Urbex videos, and well made videos showcasing cool technologies/scientific breakthroughs and the histories therein. I have some ideas to add to a playlist, but if he's going to be stuck immobile in a hospital bed for the forseeable future, he's going to need a lot of stuff to watch, so hopefully there's some stuff folks can recommend here that he'd enjoy. And if nothing else, it can help others here find cool things to watch as well. some examples of the stuff I've tossed into a playlist for him: The entirety of Fall of Civilizations Mr. Ed - Nick Knacks #53 Exploring an Abandoned Chinese Ghost City Exploring the Oldest Shipwreck in the World When Giant Hypercarnivores Prowled Africa Kenichi Ebina at SFHHDF 2006 All Tomorrows: The Future of Humanity? any good recommendations are much appreciated, I'm going to get things set up for him when I see him tomorrow.

Tasting History with Max Miller might be up his alley. Makes and taste tests recreations of historical recipes. Can't link right now, though, because I'm on mobile.

Techmoan is a great channel that showcases all kinds of lesser known, forgotten, and failed technologies. Townsends is a colonial American cooking channel that shows what food and life was like in 18th century America. And if your dad likes cars or any kind of tinkering, can’t go wrong with Vice Grip Garage. The best videos are the ones where he buys a car that’s been sitting for decades and tries to get them running again so he can drive them hundreds of miles home as cheaply as possible. Best of luck to you and your dad’s recovery, Captain.

He does like restoration stuff, he once restored my grandfather's antique dental cabinet after it had sat dilapidated for decades. this exact model, actually(other people's photos): he may be of the "likes to do it himself, not watch videos of other people doing it" but I will see! thanks so much to everyone who has provided recommendations so far, this gives him a huge variety of stuff to check out!

The "Battlefield" series of documentaries I remember fondly, at least the WWII ones. They do a deep dive into specific battles of the war and explain in detail exactly how things played out. I can't speak to the non-WWII episodes since I haven't really watched them. The "Battle of Stalingrad" episode I remember being particularly chilling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbKYbLUkIpk Edit: I also strongly second "The Secret Life of Machines" - that was a great series. If memory serves there are remastered episodes up and available as of like a year or so ago.

If you guys have Amazon Prime, The Poisoner's Handbook is a great documentary on the establishment of forensics in the early 20th century. Here's Stealing Lincoln's Body , about a couple of counterfeiters who schemed to hold Lincoln's corpse hostage. A little broader, but CineFix is a great channel about the art of film and they have a lot of appreciation for the oldies extending back to Kurosawa, Chaplin, and even silents. They examine success in genre, score, editing, just about anything you can love about a movie.

Thank you everyone for the recommendations! I came to visit him and despite having 13 broken ribs(they clarified, he has a total of 17 damaged ribs; 4 bruised and 13 broken in a way that they have clearly broken but the pieces did not "separate", so surgery isn't necessary and they'll heal back together on their own, EXTREMELY lucky imo) and a shattered scapula, he's able to get up himself and do stuff like go to the bathroom on his own. they're considering him safe to return home since he has all the necessities on the first floor. They're signing him up for in-home therapy and assistants to show up every few days for more involved tasks, but besides that think he can continue on his own as usual. I'm kind of flabbergasted, I'd think he'd have to be admitted for a week at least, but I guess I'm not a doctor. I'll be checking in on him regardless, and this Playlist as well as all these recommendations will still be very useful while he's chilling out in his recliner for the upcoming 3-6 months of recovery. Thank you all again, and keep'em coming, an increased variety of stuff is great for him to swap between. I asked him for more preferences and he said science stuff in particular is big for him right now, stuff like Scishow and other bite-sized breakdowns of things he likes, but also the occasional deep dive like chernobyl etc.
