I may get laughed out of here for this.

But about half a lifetime ago, I bought a Peavy Predator, one of the first ones, and I played the hell out of it for years and loved it.

Later, around ‘94, I bought a Strat, and so I gave the Predacaster to my father, who played it himself for years.

I always loved the thing, and this will sound crazy, but in some ways that I’m not even sure I can properly articulate, the Predacaster just felt better to me than the Strat I replaced it with. The neck felt a little smaller, for one, and I don’t have the longest fingers.

Don’t get me wrong, the American Strat was a much nicer guitar. The pickups were certainly better, among other things.

My Dad loved it too, and I have an uncle who is way bigger into guitars than either of us ever were… he’s one of these people who has about a dozen guitars, and some of those are really nice ones. My Dad loaned the Peavy to him for about three weeks a long time back, and he had nothing but good things to say about it also.

Flash forward to present. Dad doesn’t play anymore. I myself quit playing around ‘96. For the past two years I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and watching YouTube how-to videos and kind of lusting for a guitar and an amp again. Rarely I would grab my wife’s Takamine acoustic and play along but mostly I’ve been doing it sort of in my head.

So the other night I was telling Dad about how much I wanted to play again, and he got real excited, told me instead of spending the money on a new guitar and amp, he’d just ship the Peavy and one of his amps to me.

So this is super-cool. If you’ve read this far, here is my question. Dad’s a lefty and had the nut turned when I gave it to him like thirty years ago, and so now I need to have the nut turned back around, restrung, have the intonation checked out, etc. It hasn’t been given a once-over by a luthier in thirty years.

Can anyone say about how much this will run me?

In addition, how much would it run me to have the bridge pickup replaced with a humbucker, one that goes maybe from the $100-$150 range? The space underneath the pickguard I remember has a cavity big enough to put one in, it won’t need to be cut into to make room.

The reason I say it sounds crazy is I know this isn’t an expensive guitar, maybe not worth doing all this to, but it’s kind of a family heirloom, and all three of us loved playing it.

And ultimately it’s got to be cheaper than buying a MiM strat with HSS pickup configuration, which was my initial plan (and which I cannot afford)

Yeah, I thought about buying the pickup and trying to do it myself. The thing is, I know zero about soldering and don’t have the stuff I need for that either. I’m scared of loving it up.

What you bring up that I had not thought about is that the selector switch and tone/volume pots might be flaky as well. It’s all very old.

I've had to get pickguards made custom for mine over the years.

Thanks. Mine is that PG- 2770 style. It’s this one, exactly:

https://reverb.com/item/65571667-peavey-predator-sss-with-power-bend-vibrato-1990s-cream

It won’t be here until tomorrow. When it comes I can check out the switch and the knobs and see if all that seems okay, and then decide about everything from there.

For sure, at a minimum I’ve got to get the nut changed and the setup, because I can’t play it at all without that.

But maybe I’m thinking too big about the pickup/wiring/pickguard change. It’s just that a humbucker was something I thought about even way back when I had it before.

Before I replaced with another, more expensive guitar with the SSS config

I can’t play it at all the way it’s strung right now, but I did plug it in and check out the tone, and it sounds real nice in its original SSS config, running through the amp clean.

Dial in a bit of gain on the overdrive channel on this little crate amp, and it gets pretty wicked, also. Not exactly the same type of crunch I’d get with a humbucker, but it is pretty sweet.

MrMojok

What kind of bridge is thought to be best for reducing part of the friction that causes it to go out of tune when you get on the tremolo bar?

Is brass better than bone? Graphite?

MrMojok
Jan 28, 2011

Gramps posted:

As long as the bridge is in good shape, it's generally not necessarily friction that causes tuning issues, so I only typically recommend replacing saddles if there's a string breakage issue. Most of your tuning issues are coming from the nut anyway. If your trem goes out of tune, listen for creaking- it's probably your strings binding in the nut.

Anyway back to bridges- most guitars that have bridges that move are dependent on having the system set up correctly so it reliably returns to zero. It needs to be adjusted perfectly, and there can not be anything that causes any creaking or clunking in the movement. It needs to be smooth so it reliably returns to zero. This usually just means making sure everything down there is set up correctly and your pivot points are working as intended. In the case of knife edge type bridges like floyds, it means your bridge posts need to be in good shape and your knife edges need to be relatively sharp and shaped as intended. With screw-pivot bridges like a strat you just have to make sure the pivot screws are set correctly so nothing is binding.

poo poo, I am so sorry. I wrote bridge when I meant to write nut. My question was, is brass or bone or graphite nut better for this purpose?

How in the gently caress do you do pinch harmonics? I feel like this is something that seems like it should be really simple, and for some reason I just cannot get the technique right.

This was one of the things I wanted to do when I was playing guitar decades ago, and now that I have started again, especially since I am listening to a lot of =VH=, I want to try and do now.

I don't seem to be able to learn the touch required. Is there any shortcut, or do I just have to keep trying, and eventually I'll discover the feel, and it will be like the moment I learned how to ride a bike without training wheels, and then it's just there and I'll always know it from then on?!?

This is so frustrating. The most I seem to be able to get is a muted buzzy sound.

Now that I have that guitar back and have started The Journey Towards Rock God again, I have certain songs I like to try to play. Everyone does, right?

My single favorite guitar track of all time is I’m the One by =VH=

I am starting to think that trying to play this tune after spending half my life without playing at all was a mistake!

Thread shredders, I am once again asking for your input.

When I was a little kid my grandparents had a piano in their house. When I was about six I started picking out Beatles tunes and some classical music on the piano, by ear. I’ve always had a really, really good ear for music. When I was eight or so, I could play a fairly decent albeit primitive version of the intro to I Am the Walrus.

In middle school I took a piano class, where we were made to learn to read music. I always hated that and refused to learn it, bombed every test designed to prove knowledge of reading music, and on the practical exams I would instead find out what was going to be on there, learn it by ear, and play it that way.

Later when I started playing guitar I did it the same way… listen, and find the notes on the neck.

I played like this for years and then quit. I’ve started playing again, and if you ask me to make a C chord or a G or a D or E minor or whatever, I can do that. Don’t ask me to slide the E-shape up two frets and tell you what chord it is now, I don’t know.

I can play some solo type stuff but it’s because I hunted and pecked and found the notes, then worked on speed until it sounded like I knew what I was doing.

But I don’t, and never have. I don’t know what an interval or a measure is, nor what is a third or a fifth. I know the rudiments of things like minor pentatonic scale, but I’m not able to use that to just noodle, I’m always just copying stuff that I’ve heard.

Can anyone recommend some YouTube channel or online lesson I can see to start learning these things? I understand now that I have to do this in order to really understand music, and understand how things work together, and get better.

I know what I should really do is just pay for some lessons from a good teacher, and there are hundreds of them in LA. Or shell out the money for some online guitar improvement course, but I’m afraid I’m a bit cash-poor at the moment.

Struggling, struggling, struggling to not spend money on a 32 year-old Peavy predator.

I bought this new in a music store in 1992. Played it for about a year, then my wife at the time bought me an American Strat as a surprise, so I gave the Predacaster to my Dad.

Even though the Strat was objectively a nicer guitar, I really missed the Peavey. The neck felt so much better to me.

The Strat is now long gone and after many years I decided to start playing again. Dad had quit, so he gave the Predacaster back to me.

It’s got a fantastic setup and just feels soooo good. But I keep feeling tempted to put money into it.

I could maybe get $200 for this thing by selling it, yet I want to put better tuners on it and also change the bridge pickup to a nice humbucker, and get a different colored pickguard.

Please, somebody, talk some sense into me. For the money I’d spend on these things, I could instead just save towards buying a new Fender Player Plus, or something.
