I was recently reminiscing on a video series that is now nearly old enough to be in high school. So old that the first two installments don't even use a 16:9 aspect ratio For those who need a brief intro/recap, back in the day someone dug up a hilariously bad Half Life fanfiction called Half Life: Full Life Consequences by an author known as squirrelking. It was riddled with typos, perhaps understandable as it is believed that the author was eight at the time and did not speak English as a first language. More than that though, the series featured a charmingly Mary Sue protagonist and a storyline riddled with action tropes, all loosely bound together with just enough working knowledge of the HL universe to keep it from falling apart completely. It was a near perfect recipe, managing to plunge headfirst into every non-erotic fanfiction pitfall while still standing tall, a testament to how a thing can, in fact, be so bad it's good The story and its sequels inspired dramatic readings on sites like YTMND, which in turn inspired visual adaptations across the Flashscape and the burgeoning world of online video. Arguably none were as elaborate or funny as Icton's infamous machinima series created with Garry's Mod. Numerous unique features set it apart: * Literal depictions of typos and misspellings? Yes * Campy cartoon soundtrack? Yes * Motorcycle made out of a bathtub? Yes * Characters constantly make goofy faces? Yes * Characters make an even goofier face a split second before the shot ends? Oh hell yes The HL:FLC series starts with the titular story, in which the OC DO NOT STEAL sibling of the video game's actual main character receives a distress call from his brother and leaps into action. I'm sorry, backflips into action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHxyZaZlaOs THE PANTS WERE DEAD In the wake of the tragedy that befell at the end of the first installment, John Freeman must exact revenge amidst constant sad reminders that his brother is, in fact, dead...or is he? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8yHguvYYyQ I WILL KILL THE BOSS AND GORDON FREEMAN WILL BE HAPPY SOUL Next we fast forward, I guess, even though the first half of the series already took place in a HL2 setting. Combines, plural, have taken over the world, and the fate of humenkind may rest in the hands of Freeman. You know, Henry Freeman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NiCYPrAoB8 IT GAVE THEM HOP For the series' final installment, Icton seemed determined to outdo himself, so he created a nearly 20-minute epic by breaking from the narration for several minutes for a madcap action sequence, including a surprisingly poignant cinematic ending, and wrapping it all up with a kickin' music video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULWgEnnmcv4&t=651s THE HUG TOWER |

There was also a small spinoff of sorts featuring a fanfiction by Peter Chimaera https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOvglodUIcA GORDON FREECHMAN Slightly more recently were a couple that I hadn't seen until I looked the channel up again. Apparently squirrelking has a formula and it works, and I'm sure "Joe Chief" would agree https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKYKXAakmuw There is only one correct way to read "HALOS IN SPACE" and this guy nails it Icton got a little more experimental with his last animated fanfiction, a Doom story again by Peter Chimaera, probably using a newer version of Gary's Mod that allowed for even more cartoonish facial distortions or something https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdZzNtFa74w THE RADIO CRACKERED |
